Product description
Widely considered to be both The Smiths’ finest work and one of the greatest albums ever made, ‘The Queen Is Dead’ has cast a significant influence over subsequent generations since it was first released in the summer of 1986. Now Warner Bros. Records can confirm details of a newly mastered and expanded version of the album that will be released on 20th October.
The album features several of the band’s finest moments including the title track and ‘There Is A Light That Never Goes Out’, as well as the iconic singles ‘The Boy With The Thorn In His Side’ and ‘Bigmouth Strikes Again’.
"You cannot continue to record and simply hope that your audience will approve, or that average critics will approve, or that radio will approve,” says Morrissey. “You progress only when you wonder if an abnormally scientific genius would approve – and this is the leap The Smiths took with The Queen Is Dead."
Johnny Marr adds, “The Queen Is Dead was epic to make and epic to live.”

Let me start with the positives: the new master is superb, I would have happily paid £10 for it with the second disc of alternative takes; the stereo sound on the DVD is also excellent, it sounds great on the DVD system.
the negatives: The live CD is 54 minutes long and, despite there being ample room for it, it is nothing like the full show. Why?; For me the major down side is the DVD. There is plenty of space left on the DVD so why on earth isn't the original mix of the album included? That is the minor gripe. The major one is, where the hell is the 5.1 mix? Surely that is largely the reason for including a DVD? I have Steven Wilson's remixes/remasters of the Yes and Jethro Tull albums, the Yes blu rays contain about 7 different versions of the album in question, the Jethro Tull DVDs have all sorts of goodies. The primary reason for buying all of these discs was the 5.1 mixes.
I appreciate it is my fault, I just assumed it would be included and it was the primary reason I bought the box. That doesn't stop me feeling a bit cheated not to mention that it is a great opportunity missed.
Ordered from UK because price was better than here in the US. Also, it seems that UK vinyl is higher quality than US vinyl - from the standpoint that about half of all the records I have ordered here in the states is warped and I have to return it for replacement. Getting to the point that I almost don't want to buy any new records from Amazon US. (Return policy is top notch for Amazon this is not their fault but the pressing facility, it is just the pain to repackage and drive over to the UPS store.....I digress too much.)
This is an archive rerelease of a dead star that will never shine again - so the whole black only and removal of green and pinks seems quite fitting to me
The new infamous gatefold image of protestser in a smiths t shirt with Big Ben looking on places the band out of time and immortal as they are
The inside booklet image repeated of Big Ben slowly fading again symbolises the passing of time
And finally the music - great live cd -demos that are worth a repeated listen with some interesting differences and nice to get the proper segued version of rubber ring and asleep and that immortal lp again which can never tire and to my ears the new remaster is less trebly and harsh than the last one so I’m happy with it
What a band they was
The price. Shocking really for 3 discs of music.
The art work. Where's the lovely racing car green colour? Great pictures of Alain Delon but where is the original inner sleeve pic?
The booklet. Poor indeed. No pics of the band, not even from the iconic Salford Lad's shoot, of which many were taken.
The live cd. Available as a good quality bootleg for decades. This is not even the full show for goodness sake!
The DVD. Jarman videos are fine, if a little dated now , but there should have been a live show included. So many of the 86 shows were videoed and a lot of them were good quality. One or several could have been cleaned up for this release surely.
I'm a Smiths completist so I had no choice but to purchase. In not an audiophile so I cannot distinguish this remaster from previous releases I have in the collection.
There's nothing on here which I did not own previously. So, not money well spent for me I'm afraid.
I do like the Kerouac picture on the live CD though!!
