Although there was a few tense moments in this story and I was hanging on the edge of my seat with shaky hands flicking through the pages, Ann Lister dealt with the storyline with sensitivity and empathy.
I’ve completely fell in love with Nick Honor’s character AKA Fizzbo. He’s the kind of alpha male we all dream about. Strong, loving, tender when needed, but also he’s passionate and oozes sex appeal. His filthy mouth had me smiling, oh yeah, I was into Fizzbo’s dirty talking right along with Kensey. He sure knows how to get the adrenaline pumping through your body.
Kensey Pride is a little sex bomb, he’s like a fiery rocket ready to shoot literally. Fizzbo sure knows how to work him up. Kensey’s has a past like most of us, but his is a little more sordid than most. I tried not to judge him until I had the full story, but I was shocked to hear what he had been involved with. I know through school and college it’s tough to get through it without being dragged into something. So many people can be ridicule for not taking part. Being bullied is always another fear many people face. None of it is acceptable but each person going through their own thing will deal with situations not all of us will agree to. I do hope that one day hazing is a thing of the past.
Fizzbo had me laughing out loud quite a few times in the beginning of this book, he has a great sense of humor. He and Kensey do make a perfect fit. Both seriously good looking, fun guys, loving. Both deserve a chance at happiness.
This new spin off series from The Rock Gods just keeps getting better. I don’t know how this Author manages to make the sexiest stories come to life while dealing with very serious situations. I’m really looking forward to hearing Mason’s story. These guards are most definitely turning out to be the hottest guards in the Rock world.

Well, wait no more, because we learn what Fizzbo's real name is, and what his back story is. His HEA is so perfectly written with Kensey, it made me smile with pride.
One of my favorite lines in the book happens at the end, but perfectly sums up Fizzbo and Kensey's feelings for each other:
"Why’d you pick Pride to be your last name?” Kensey took a while to consider his answer before he said , “I thought if I made the word part of my name, it might actually make me feel that way about myself.” Fizzbo used his fingers to turn Kensey’s chin and their eyes connected. “I’m proud of you, Kensey,” he whispered. “I was, in the very beginning, and even more so now.”“I’m proud of myself , too,” Kensey answered, and for the first time in his life he realized he actually meant it. “I think honor goes really well with pride , don’t you think?” Fizzbo said and grinned. Kensey entwined their fingers, then squeezed their hands together. “You can’t have true honor without having pride.” "
I truly enjoyed reading Kensey and Fizzbo's characters. The painful subject matter of the book that happens to Kensey, both past and present, had my heart weeping for him. Kensey's quiet strength and Fizzbo's protective heart help them find the love, honor, and pride they have by being together.
Ann Lister is a master of crafting love scenes that are scorching hot, and achingly tender. I adore her characters, and always look forward to reading the unique people she is able to bring to life. When I read her love scenes, my heart swells, and I sigh with utter contentment. A perfect example is below:
"Their arms and legs cradled and held the other in a way that fully displayed how much they cherished the other. It was all there reflecting between them, raw and open for only the two of them to see, and it was as vivid as the brightest pallet of artist’s paints that anyone could imagine."
Do yourself a favor, and read Honor and Pride, book two of Ann Lister ' s Guarding the Gods spin off series. It will have all things you have grown to love with her Rock Gods series. AND, we get to see and catch up with past characters from previous books!
Hint hint... *whispers*....Wheland and Rooster....
If you've been reading Lister's books since the Rock Gods series, then you know who Fizzbo is and what he's been through. You also know that the fire the guys survived weren't the only sparks flying on that tour. Let me start by saying the only thing about this book I didn't care for is Fizzbo's nickname. His name is actually Nick, so hence forth, I will refer to him as such since the name Fizzbo makes me shudder and not in a good way.
Nick set his sights on Kensey, the bands makeup artist, while on tour and now that everyone is back home and moving past the incident while on tour, Nick wants to make his fantasy a reality. Kens is hesitant though and as the book progresses, you learn why. This poor kid has been through it, let me just say, and Nick really is perfect for him. He's big, strong, smart and caring. But he's not so big and strong that he can't admit when he's wrong, can't bend and go with the flow and know when his lover needs him to be soft and gentle. The darkness of Kensey's past looms over them from the start like a storm on the horizon. When it hits, it's not certain if they'll make it out alive, much less together.
I have to say, I didn't think of Nick the way he's described in this book. Of course since he's always been a more secondary character, his physical description was never fully explored. He's a real badass if I'm being honest, but lord when he has Kensey in his arms, he's a gentle giant. Kensey fears being more than friends with Nick for several reasons, one being opening up about his painful past with anyone, fear of getting hurt if he lets his guard down and cares for anyone but he seems to somewhat fear Nick's size and demeanor briefly. This is part of why Nick being the way he is with Kensey makes these two so damned sexy and adorable. The relationship tethers on a thin line at the start for reasons I've already stated, slowly moving on to something more stable and concrete.
There was action, suspense, intrigue and a whole hell of a lot of passion with these two. I loved how romantic Nick turned out to be, it was exactly what Kensey needed. I can't wait for the next book in this series!
Honor and Pride, the second installment in the Guarding the Gods series was one for the record books.
Anyone familiar with ANY other work of Ann's will remember Fizzbo as the bossy, more serious alpha, who runs Ventura Security for his boss, Vic. I always wondered about Fizzbo, aka NIck—yes, he has a real name—and what he was all about. For such a hard man, who's always barking in everyone's faces, well, let me tell ya—this ex-Marine has another side! There's only one person who can turn him to mush. It's hysterical and heart warming just the same.
Kensey Pride is the hair and make-up guy who was on tour with both bands when they all went through hell in the fire at a Berlin concert hall. He's charming and adorable. My heart ached for him so many times throughout this book. My god, the people in his life who have taken advantage of him—I wanted to scoop him up in my arms and never stop hugging him. But!! I didn't have to—not when Fizzbo's got his back (and his front!)
Along with showing us how these two get together, the storyline surrounding Kensey is full of suspense, danger, and heartbreak. It touches on the subject of hazing as Ann takes us back to Kensey's college years. I adore her for always taking a serious issue and bringing it front and center, all the while giving us a fantastic story as an example.
Fizzbo and Kensey are great together. They bring out the best in one another. I fell madly in love with both of them, individually, as I did with them together. There are so many tender moments which left me swooning. But on the other hand, right when I thought Fizzbo was such a teddy bear, he also turns out to be a filthy-mouthed devil.
Ann outdid herself with this one. The attention to detail with this storyline alone is a testament to just how talented an author she truly is, as this is ONE CAPTIVATING STORY.
Honor and Pride is perfect: the story itself, Fizzbo and Kensey, the secondary characters who add so much depth and color, oh, and the mouthwatering description of Kensey's kind of grilled cheese sandwich.
Remember, you can't have true Honor without Pride. I love you Ann Lister. You are brilliant! Hands down, this gem was a ten star read for me.
