I thought I'd summaries it with a few points and comparisons to the the two obvious drones, the DJI Mavic and Phantom 4 Pro.
Cost = 3.5/5
Can be a little eye watering for a consumer but for what you get, its decently priced. The karma falls in between the Mavic and Phantom Pro, but you get a lot more bang for you buck.
Size = 4/5
Comes nicely proportioned backpack of it's own that I fit inside of a 65L kit bag (I put the Karma backpack inside my kitbag with my camera, lenses and tripod etc) but you can happily and easily use it on its own. It's not too heavy so you wont be too worried about lugging it around. No where near as small as the Mavic but a lot lot more easier to carry and pack than the Phantom 4 range, in general it's just a very reasonable size.
Ease of use = 5/5
Flying is a peace of cake and extremely stable, even in pretty strong wind conditions. It doesn't fly as high or as far as the other two drones, but then again i never have out of range issues like I did with the Phantom 4. But in general with the Phantom and Mavic being able to fly further, it may limit your distance to explore a little bit. I personally haven't found that to be a problem at all. In terms of general flying there is a simulator built in to the controller so you can get used to the flying controls before even taking the drone to the skies.
Adaptability = 5/5
Quite simple this one, you've got a Drone, Stabaliser Grip and the detachable Go Pro it's self. It's almost impossible for the others to compete with that package.
Battery = 2/5
The longest flight I've had so far is about 16-18 mins. I can appreciated stabilising in the wind drains the battery life but it really limits your ability to explore, which is one of the reasons why you buy a drone. The GoPro (not fully tested but a good 2hours), the stabiliser (1-2 hours) and the controllers battery (Done about 15 flights and it's still on around 50%!) are all pretty solid.
Camera = 4/5
Excellent RAW photos, video codec is good and you can do some nice grading with it, especially if you've filmed in good lighting conditions (so outdoors basically) If you don't know what colour grading is or don't plan on editing then the out of the box settings will be more than good enough to capture some amazing footage. I personally prefer the image quality over the Mavic, but the Phantom 4 pro gets a 5/5 when it comes to image quality.
Overall = 4/5
If the camera were able to have a slightly higher bit rate video codec and the battery life was better, I'd easily give it a 5/5. Hopefully GoPro or a 3rd party will bring out a higher capacity battery in the future. But either way I think you'll be really impressed if you got one.
Attached is a very rough cut and simple graded video (sorry for my dodgy face in the video) just to demonstrate the ease of use. If you have questions or would like to see more footage and pictures please feel free to ask/contact with a comment to this review.
First lets begin with a quick Pro's and Con's list:
- Value to Equiptment
- Quality of product
- Consumer design of said product. (I.E size, Controller etc..)
- GoPro's support & Software. (+ The passanger app for your friends)
- GoPro Hero 5 (The best action camera out there, Trust me)
- Handheld grip (Amazing product & is a huge factor to proffesional footage)
- Bag - Very protective, good design & Distributes the weight correctly.
- Charger - Comes with dual support to charge both the battery and either controller or camera at the same time (Amazing & well thought of)
- Battery Life (It's not as long as you'd want but it's a very powerful drone)
- Legs under the drone to support it's landing are very short.
There is my list, now let me write my full review on it for them who would like to read my full feedback on the product.
I've used many drones and base my experience from many of factors, but i'm also a videographer and Photographer so the camera is super key to myself, now i can ensure you that you will NOT be disapointed with the Hero 5. Get one regardless, the Hero Silver 4 in my opinion does not touch this. Everything from the video & Picture quality to the stabilization is one of a kind.
Now the review before this one slated the drone on a few things, i'd like to respond to them in this review:
- Dropping from the sky & Controller connection loss:
Nope, never happened to myself and you really cant base the first version of the drope against the new one. Yes battery issues caused it to drop but for them customers they got a Free Hero 5 due to the issue when they returned their done, Name a company that cares about their customers like that in which they gave a free product worth £300+ due to the inconvience it's caused? Now controller loss... once again not happened to me nor a lot of other GoPro users? Did you even try to update everything? Honestly if the drone is smarter than the user perhaps it's not for you...
- Blade coming off & Causing Gash...
Really?(Insert laughing emoji) I actually read your review before purchasing the drone and purposely stuck my thumb in the way of the blade and it barely hurt... I actually laughed so much after I did it, just realising how much of a melodramatic person you are. Regards to the blade coming off, you clearly didn't put it on right then and if you know anything about drones you're meant to be a distance from the drone before starting the take off. Now before you say it was an issue with the thread of the motor's which caused the blade come off, you're wrong because you succesfully ran a second flight.
- Seriously lacks finish
Now this was probably the best part of the whole review... it comes with a harden case with it being fully protective, the camera is fully waterproof to a certain amount, the drone is made of light matterials but all has a gloss and grippy finish, blades are heavy plastic and everything has a ergonomic design and materials to help the consumer use the product... Im really not sure what on earth you were expecting.
Now I hope i've put light on the flawed review or as he said 'plagued continuously with problems' review.
NOW MY FULL SHORT REVIEW:
I often see people compare this drone to the mavic but you really cant and the reason for that is for the price tag your not just getting a drone, you actually get so much more, you get a full proffesional filming kit for ground and air!
Everything is well built and is more than easy to grab and head out to capture the footage you need, for instance last night I saw an amazing skyline with pink colours, wasn't expecting it but I quickly chucked my drone in it's bag and headed out and caught everything I wanted within a few minutes.
Everything you get is pure quality and worth the money you spend, GoPro really thought about the user side of everything (Not a suprise from GoPro) but what you also got to keep in mind is, having GoPro's voice and size in the drone market is a huge thing. They will help and keep the Drone policies to be beneficial for us users, without big companies like that the goverment will simply try and reduce us using them anywhere so please forgive the company for their first mistake and give it a shot.
That is me ending the review for now but i'll provide my own content to this review so you can see the quality! (All of the content was captured in the same day)
