For starters it's the most erotic work I have ever read in my life and 50 times more erotic than '50 Shades' that's for sure. So if you liked that book this one is the genuine article and a must for anyone into erotica.
In a way it was like virtual sex because most of the book is told in the first person narrative a bit like old pulp fiction and so you are often inside the main characters head and feeling what he feels and seeing what he sees. The main character is also in a pop group so you get a different insight again into this lifestyle that you don't get with normal characters.
But hold on a minute I haven't even mentioned the main premise of this book that drew me onboard in the first place. It's about a musician in a popular UK indie pop group who lives a secret life outside the UK as a adventurer. He decides to stick a pin in the map and follow it wherever it leads him for one month to have the adventure of a life time and that's exactly what he does. He starts off in Florida in the U.S.A and eventually takes in Cuba and Mexico. So like him you just never know what is going to happen next and that really keeps you on your toes and keeps things fresh and interesting. To add to that there are stories within stories making it a bit like a Russian doll with one featuring a major Hollywood icon.Read more ›
A friend recommended it to me saying it was the best book she had read in many years, so it had a lot to live up to.
It was the sheer originality of the story and the great dialogue that really won me over.
I read a lot of good books but can't help feeling that I have come across a similar story before either in another book or on TV and Film but with The Adventures of a Dark Duke it was totally original and I have never read anything like it before. It doesn't have a predictable format either.
The premise of the story is the lead character sticks a pin in a map and follows it to have adventures across Florida. So because he doesn't know what will happen next the same applies to the reader, which is one thing that made this read exciting. It features many interesting characters that the main protagonist meets who themselves have interesting stories so you get stories within stories that take you in yet another direction. It even features one about Greta Garbo that I really loved.
His run in with the Hells Angels was very enlightening and the part of the story set in Cuba was totally captivating. I felt like I was there with the Dark Duke and when the story is told through his character which it often is, it works really well. The book also contains some excellent lyrics that makes the lead character very realistic as he is supposed to be a songwriter and musician. It does contain a lot of erotic bits but that part of it was tastefully and stylishly done.
So, if you are looking for something different and interesting but equally gripping I highly recommend this book. I can't wait for the follow up book now as I'm totally hooked on this character and I was really happy to learn it will be a series of books.
What we all love about books is they take you to another world and that's great in fantasy like 'Game of Thrones' but it's not often you can be taken into a new world in a contemporary setting that you have never encountered before but this novel ticks that box big time.
It's obvious that the author is well travelled and has lived a life and I was very impressed with the part that takes place in Mexico as this is where I originally come from. It's very accurate and the characters really jump off the page and grab you, not only in that section but throughout the book. There are a number of stories within stories that could have made good novels all on their own and added a new dimension to the book. Another unusual thing about this book was although page wise it's not as long as many books out there I felt like I'd read an epic because so much happened and you could never predict what was going to happen next and it had a great end twist.
The other thing I was really impressed with was the erotic content. When fifty shades came out there were millions of contrived copy cat cash ins that were just putting clichéd standard erotic fare into books.Read more ›
