This is the book to read even before putting your feet on the pedals. You will feel a whole lot more knowledgeable and excited about what you are letting yourself in for. It will help you sift through all those questions and concerns about the 'what, where, when, how and why' aspects of cycle travel. It covers equipment choices, how to procure visas, practical day to day living on the road, transportation of bicycles etc. It is thoroughly researched and written from personal experience by both the author and others in the cycle touring fraternity. The book is written in a very accessible style and is an enjoyable read in itself. Highly recommended.

This book is primarily aimed at people who have never cycle toured before. It answers just about every question you could have about the practicalities of how to prepare for, survive and enjoy your ride. Whether you are a planning a short or long trip, on sealed or dirt roads, in the developed or developing world, or any combination thereof, you'll find plenty of useful information.

I suppose I should call myself a seasoned cycle-tourer, having spent two years and counting cycling around the world. It was Tomsbiketrip.com that opened my eyes to the world of cycle touring and convinced me it was possible for an ordinary bloke like me with no experience to cross entire countries and then continents by bke. I always look forward to reading everything Tom writes because in addition to being a foremost authority on all things bike-travel, he has a very enjoyable writing style. Everyone develops their own rhythms and routines when cycle-touring, but it's always interesting to read about and talk to others about how they tour. It was in that spirit that I read this guide and I'm glad I did, gleaning a few practical tips along the way.

I particularly enjoyed the final section of the book 'Going Further'. For anyone who has done some touring and is thinking about (or currently engaged in) a long ride of many months or more, this section provides lots of thought-provoking and insightful material. There's a lot of literature out there already about the practicalities of bike touring, but not much is written about the mental reconditioning that occurs during a really long bike trip. Tom has got a lot to say on this subject and does so eloquently.

Having come to Tom Allen via the around-the-world-trip-writing of Rob Lilwall, Alastair Humpheys and Mark Beaumont et al, it's fair to say I enjoy the concept of adventure cycling. Where as those writers have detailed accounts of their respective trips around the world, I believe Tom Allen has perhaps written the definitive guide on not just how to go about it, but also how to survive it.

I've followed Tom's adventures for a while now and being a keen touring cyclist myself, I was eager to read his latest 'tome'! It's fair to say that Tom Allen has 'been there and done that' and can certainly speak from experience when it comes to cycle touring and the practicalities of such are very much reflected here.

Tom's experiences are not just aimed squarely at 'Adventure Cyclists' a lot of what he writes is completely relevant to touring cyclists in general. I guess many people would love to be able to take the time to and disappear into the sunset on a bike, but circumstances dictate that most people's trips are about 8-10 days in length, and yet a lot of Tom's writing is very applicable to people like us.

The book is split into 3 distinct chapters - essentially a before, during and what next? It pretty much every aspect of cycle touring, from early planning; choosing a bike; insurance etc via sat navs to visas; accommodation; health issues which may arise during the trip and relationship advice - and pretty much everything in between. There's not much that isn't covered.

I like Tom's no-nonsense approach. It makes the book easy to read and easily the best book I've read on the subject. As Tom might say: "Let's ride"

Right then, can't sit here all day, got to book the ferry for this summers cyclo-camping expedition down the Rhine!

Having completed two 3 month cycle tours already I was unsure if I would gain a further insight or information with this book.

I did! It was well written and Tom's observations on the realities of cycle touring in Part 3:how to go further put into words what I had experienced on my tours but could never describe myself! From novice to experienced cycle adventurer this is a worth purchase.

I love the beautiful simplicity with which Tom explains how to being a cycle touring adventure. I am not even a quarter of the way through the book and Tom's guide has already presented the necessary confirmation that cycle-touring is a wonderful way to travel, accessible to everyone, no matter how big or small your adventure. The book is also a treasure trove of links to useful websites to aid adventures and is full of snippets from people who have been there and done it. Tom himself writes in a way which removes all of the confusion and haziness from planning/doing a tour. Truly worth a read if you are trying to open your mind to a new simpler way of being and a way to get more out of life. Great stuff.
