Format: Paperback
A fascinating account of the author's car journey with her two
foreign-born sons from south-west England to central Scotland in the 1970s
to visit the places she grew up in. The many photographs lend an added
dimension to the narrative and both remind the reader of an earlier Britain;
but this is no mere travelogue. Fay Knowles's rediscovery of the places and
people she knew during her Scottish childhood is well described and
supported with tales from her mother's family history. These take the reader
back to the late 19th and mid-20th century. Like the author herself, many of
her ancestors also left home for distant shores - proof indeed that Scotland
has for long been a land of emigration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgia trip 17 Jan. 2017

I really enjoyed Fay's account of her return to her homeland of Scotland in the 1970s. Having lived there myself for a number of years in the 1960s, it gave me a nostalgia trip of my own, and brought back happy memories of my time in the country.

This is the beauty of what Fay has done: in providing an entertaining and enjoyable account of her own experiences, she has opened the door to readers' own memories and made them think: What was I doing in the 1970s? How was my life different from Fay's? Why don't I write my own memoir?

Fay is an inspiration to us all, to make a lasting record of some of the interesting periods of our lives, not only as a legacy for our own families, but as an exciting point of comparison for others.

I would love to read more, Fay.

I truly enjoyed this book that is filled with rich history, photographs and scenery from the United Kingdom. The author takes you along on a fascinating journey with her and her family, and you feel as if you were right there with them. Precious old photos are shared that also include her ancestors. This mini-memoir is well worth every moment of the read.
