I somehow liked it, but then didn't. Doesn't make sense? So does a lot in the movie. Slow start, nice Storyline and acting though. Had no idea where it went in its middle - third (so hadn't the script it seems), but really loved the plot /ending. So beautifully ridiculous, absolutely fantastic. So I'm torn between hot or not. Just take a look yourself.

A quirky Indie, lowish Budget affair set in a suitably cold, gloomy environment that adds to the atmosphere. The story & main Characters are reminiscent of a Stephen King tale and it captures your attention in similar fashion

I would rather watch an excellent indie horror movie like this over any insipid hollywood rubbish any day of the week. Other reviewers have pretty much described the plot so all I will do is add my voice of recommendation for this film. However I have deducted one star due to the films ending which doesn't fit well with the rest of the story and is a little bit of a let down. All I need to do now is to get a copy of the book and see how the film compares to the source material.

2016 was a year that proved beyond a doubt that Hollywood had no clue when it came to making great horror movies. Insipid, and regurgitated plot ideas and franchises, if you wanted a horror that challenged or dared to explore new avenues, then you had to keep to the smaller independent movie companies.

Thankfully the flip side of this was 2016 being a glorious year for inventive, thought provoking and entertaining horror movies. For every Satanic, and Conjuring 2, we had films such as Baskin, The Green Room, The Autopsy of Jane Doe, The Eyes of My Mother, and the list goes on and on.

Which makes this, the first film review of 2107 on Ginger Nuts of Horror, something that hopefully keeps the great work of 2106 flowing into 2017. Will I AM NOT A SERIAL KILLER maintain the trend for great indie horror films, or will it prove to be the first stumbling block of the year?....
Based on the novel I am Not a Serial Killer by Dan Wells (you can read our exclusive interview with Dan about the film on ginger nuts of horror dot com), where John Wayne Cleaver is a slightly unbalanced sixteen-year-old, obsessed with serial killers and a regular helper at his Mum and Aunt's Mortuary it. So far so normal for a sixteen-year-old. Which would be all well good, but John is also worried that his obsession with serial killers may turn him into one. So for his own sake and the safety of those around him he lives by rigid rules to keep himself “good” and “normal”.

When somebody starts murdering people in John’s small Mid-West town, he has to investigate and risk letting his dark side out to stop the killer. But without his rules to keep him in check, he might be more dangerous than the monster he is stalking.

John Wayne Cleaver (Max Records) is a teen sociopath growing up in Clayton, Ohio. He has the traits of being a serial killer, but manages to keep his urges under control when pushed. His Mom runs the town's funeral home and he has access to dead bodies. The town does have a serial killer and John has a fascination with him, so much he does his own investigation.

This is a dark humor horror film. We get to know the killer after a few kills. There is blood and body parts.

I love these clever indie horror tales. They tend to have some unique element making formula guessing a film impossible. I also recommend "Night of the Living Deb" a comedy/zombie indie.

Guide: No swearing that I recall. No sex or nudity.

Very enjoyable and quirky story of a misfit boy with a dark side that makes it seem likely he might become a predator, until he finds a genuine serial killer is at work in his town.

What took the edge off for me is that it takes a sudden veer into a totally different genre towards the end. That can be a good thing when handled well, but here it undercuts the serious feel of what has gone before - imagine In Cold Blood suddenly turned into The Thing. Nah, I love both those films too, but not a brilliant idea.

SPOILERS in this review. I loved this movie - until the end. The concept, the acting, the sense of time and place - all combined to create a unique movie. However I would have enjoyed the last third of the movie more if the you potential killer and the old serial killer had exchanged points of view and examined their relative states of mind. Instead, a game of cat and mouse ensues which - while enjoyable - felt to me like it belonged in another movie. I also think that having Christopher Lloyds character as some kind of creature was a mistake - but looking at the reviews I'm clearly in a minority of one so far. With such a cerebral set up, I really don't understand why the film had to veer off into more standard territory. 3.5 stars.
