I have purchased a third headset from Argos and there is no buzzing! I haven't had the headset for long but from what I've read, if it doesn't buzz straight away then you should be fine.
This is what I've done. I waited until all original stock of the headset was gone before buying from a new batch. The new batches DO NOT BUZZ so I will be rating this product purely on how good it is and not the issues it had at launch.
Really good sound quality, definitely an improvement over the Gold headset. Very comfortable and easy to customise using the companion app, and music sounds good through them too. The mic isn't brilliant but is an improvement over the Golds. If you're looking for a headset with a really good mic there are much better options for much less. I recommend the Tritton Kama headset as the sound quality is really good, mic is very clear and very little background noise and only costs £20. The compromise is that it is only stereo and is not wireless.
*****What follows is no longer an issue if you have a headset from new stock*****
Although, I'm having an issue where if a USB cable is not connected to charge the headset I get a buzzing noise. This will only stop if I plug the USB back in.
This may just be a fault for my headset though, I've contacted Sony and will update this review once I have a response, to 5 star if this issue is resolved.
*EDIT*
After a few emails with playstation getting me no where, I have returned my headset. Everything I've said prior in this review is still true, but as I have seen that many other people are experiencing the same buzzing issue as me I am lowering my rating.
I will likely still be buying another pair to see if the buzzing was a one off, but if the second pair also have issues, I will be lowering this even further.
A £130 headset by Sony should not have basic issues like theses, especially when the previous model worked perfectly and still does after years of use.
*EDIT 2*
I purchased a second headset from argos and I have the exact same issue as before. I will be keeping this headset as the buzzing isn't an issue so long as sound is coming through the speakers, but it is still disappointing that Sony has not spoke out about the issue as of yet.
It seems that the fault may be due to a grounding issue causing a build up of charge. This would explain why it only occurs when not plugged in because while the wire is connected, it acts as a route to ground. Although what ever the cause is, with it being so common, it is likely a fundamental issue with the design of the headset, and unlikely to be an error with the manufacturing.
And i really am glad i spent the money on this, Sound Quality is Brilliant, Treble & Mids are crisp and clear, the bass could be a little deeper but thats just personal preference..
I also find it to be quite a comfortable headset, and the battery life definitely is lasting to what it states, able to get 4 or 5 evening gaming sessions from a full charge which would be roughly 14 or 15 hours.
So, Definitely Worth The Money!
Over the years, I have purchased every version Sony's over-eared wireless PlayStation headset, ranging from the Wireless Stereo Headset , Pulse Headset & Gold Headset . Each model was an improvement over the previous which the Platinum headset offers, but is the quality difference big enough to warrant it being twice the price (at time of review) that of the previous Gold headset?
There are several improvements that the Platinum headset has to offer:
∙ "Enhanced" 7.1 Virtual Surround Sound.
∙ 3D Audio.*
∙ Dual internal noise-cancelling microphones.
∙ Improved battery life (increased to 8-11 hours compared to previous 6-8, dependant on volume levels).
*3D audio is only available for select games and on launch of the headset, there was only a measly three games available for such feature and these must be uploaded onto the headset via the 'Headset Companion App' which can be downloaded for free on the PlayStation Store.
♦ Box Contents ♦
∙ Platinum headset.
∙ Soft carry pouch.
∙ Wireless USB dongle.
∙ Micro USB cable (quite short in length).
∙ 3.5mm Audio Cable.
∙ Instruction manuals.
♦ Build Quality & Style ♦
Many argued on the previous model that most joints were made from cheap plastic and broke easily; my argument is that if you treat items with care, there's more of a chance they won't break. I have had my "cheaply made" Gold headset for three years now and is still going strong.
That said, the Platinum headset has improved on the build quality greatly with a much sturdier construction, including on the joints and the headband is of an alloy construction.
Design wise, they look great! Mainly a black theme with the side plates being a matte black and a small PlayStation emblem in a gloss black; with the outside of the ear cups having a brushed black metal effect and the inner part of the ear cups being a royal blue colour.
♦ Set-Up ♦
For mobile phones and other similar devices, just connect the headset and device via the included audio cable. You can also connect the headset to your Dualshock 4 controller via the cable if you do not want to use it wirelessly.
- Pre PS4 Wireless Set-Up -
To get the most out of the Platinum headset, you will need to download a sound profile to the headset:
1) Go to the PlayStation store and download the 'Headset Companion App'.
2) Connect the headset to the PS4 via the micro USB cable.
3) Load up the companion and and select the appropriate headset type, in this case it would be the "Platinum Headset".
4) View the catalogues and select your first sound profile i.e. "Shooter".
5) Select the second sound profile of your choice.
6) Click next and follow through until you get to upload.
7) DONE.
When you turn on the headset, there are two options on the slide '1' or '2' this is how you enable the uploaded sound profiles.
- PS4 Wireless Set-Up -
1) Charge up the headset if you haven't already.
2) Insert the USB dongle into the PS4 then power the PS4 on.
3) Turn the headset on (located on left); select either '1' or '2'.
4) On the PS4 user interface, go to: SETTINGS - DEVICES - AUDIO DEVICES.
5) Ensure the 'Input Device' and 'Output Device' have 'USB Headset (Wireless Stereo Headset)' selected.
6) I would suggest having 'Output to Headphones' on as 'All Audio'.
If you're in a party chat, go to the party settings and select 'Prioritise Party Chat'.
If you've used the Gold headset before, then adjusting the buttons on the headset will be easy to understand (though you may have to get used to the newer layout), but if you haven't, it's important to note that there are TWO different volumes to adjust:
1) '- Volume +': This is for the overall volume decrease and increase.
2) 'Chat/Game': This is to adjust the ratio of volume between chat and game.
I would suggest bumping up the main volume a bit and then adjust the ration between chat and game.
Other buttons available are 'mute' which if pressed with mute the microphone, but if held for a couple of seconds will activate the sidetone feature (so you can "hear" yourself) and hold again to increase sidetone sensitivity and again to turn that feature off. Personally I didn't think the sidetone feature added much, which is a shame because the previous versions never had good sidetone either.
On the right ear cup is the 3D audio / VSS mode; it's a simple on or off switch.
♦ Comfort & Audio Quality ♦
- Comfort -
The lower headband surprised me; it doesn't look like much, in fact it's just a strip of silicone, but it does the job of supporting the headset and is genuinely comfortable on the head. As for the ear cushions, they're extremely soft, so no qualms there.
After a couple of days use, there is a bit of a pinch from the headset, however I think this should loosen up after more use as it stretches out, though so far even after more than an hour, I hadn't felt the need to take it off because the pressure is too much.
- Sound Quality -
In general, I'm happy with the overall sound quality: Sounds are very clear and crisp with decent range; dialogue sounds great and shots from an assault rifle amongst other audio (Battlefield 1) sound fantastic! Though there was some bass missing, however this is where it gets a bit confusing: Hooking the headset to my mobile phone and playing a song that's bass heavy, this headset WILL deliver; so why is it lacking in games such as BF1 or CoD:IW? One plausible answer is possibly down to sound profiles which are holding it back. I would personally recommend the 'Bass' sound profile over the 'Shooter' as this gives a bit more "oomph" in bass.
3D audio is something to be excited about... When more games are released with this support. Naughty Dog has shown a great example with their 3D audio compatibility with Uncharted 4. Let's hope other developers follow suit, otherwise this feature will become pointless.
Whilst the sound quality in general is very good, it isn't really a huge leap from the previous model of this headset which may make some users of the previous headset feel a tad underwhelmed.
- Mic Quality -
The microphone can really deliver. I have tested it in various ways: Going into the microphone sensitivity settings to playback my voice in real time; recorded footage on the PS4 with me talking and getting friends to give me feedback within a party chat. All of which came back with positive results: Very clear audio.
I have read from some people that they have experienced a crackling sound when using the microphone; I have yet to experience it, if I ever will.
♦ Final Thoughts ♦
Undoubtedly, this is a very good headset... But is it worth the price tag of £130 (at the time of writing this review)? Apart from the much better build quality, there isn't a major leap in quality that makes me feel like saying, "Yeah! This headset was well worth paying twice that of the Gold headset!". I think £100 or less would be more reasonable.
Nevertheless, it's your money, so it's really down to your choice. If you don't mind splashing out extra cash for the latest model there's nothing to stop you from doing just that, after all this is a very good headset to have; though if this one is out of your price range, going for the Gold Headset isn't a bad choice if you want to conserve some cash.

Still with that option locked out, this sounds better than pulse 3d, arctis pro, nova 1 and corsair hs80 and razer blackshark v2x, a must buy for ps4 for sure but not for ps5, if i had the ps4 i would not touch any other headset due to VSS here but ps5 is forcing its tempest 3d audio, except if you use the optical out way to get rid of it, no optical in in these headphones though but some dacs have it
Battery lasts about 4 hours. Really short. That must be the reason why so many videos are out there of people changing the battery themselves for a bigger one. If only I had know this before buying.
Buttons are small and unreadable. on the other hand: I only use on and off, the rest of them are always in the same position.
I would not recommend this item for active gamers. You need the constant connectoion.
I bought a wired 3d headset and connected that to my controller. Never looses signal.
And now I use this sony headset only for Zoom and Teams :(
