The wife was not amused about this Alexa upstart joining us in the bedroom- and to be fair its taken her a while to settle down ( the wife that is not alexa), but slowly she is starting to accept our new personal assistant. I use the mute button (on alexa not the wife) to ensure she's not listening all the time..even I find that a bit weird. We've had it for a few months now so here's the summary.

So obviously for us its in the bedroom and the way I pitch it is this- what do you do each morning? Check the weather? check the travel alerts/commute time? Check the news? play the radio? set an alarm..etc etc. It great for that- I like the new fact each morning when you wish her a good day. There was a lot of moaning (in reviews) at the beginning about her lack of skills in the UK but there are more than I can think of. She is very good at understanding adults and is pretty good at understanding the kids (6 and 4) though not 100%. They love asking it jokes/knock knock jokes though the jokes get a bit repetitive (my repertoire is better). We play music though amazon music and the radio player app- again the kids love asking for songs to be played. I have read some poor reviews on its fact searching based on its search engine but we have found it to be pretty decent and there are a number of skills for knowledge based data. Beware of how easy it is the order stuff through voice commands so make sure you set up the controls and security around that! The dot speaker itself it perfect for a bedside but if you want it for a larger room you probably want to pair it with a bluetooth speaker/use aux. I have not tried that. It was VERY easy to set up at the beginning- I use the iPhone Alex App.

All in all I think its a very clever, functional and fun device and at £50 its a steal.

Amazing little assistant.

The amazon echo dot is a brilliant little gadget for Any home. It has so many brilliant features for entertainment and practicality and as far as function goes it is very fast and very smooth (this of course depends on your internet connection) The lessened speaker volume and quality in comparison to the echo dot is not an issue for me personally as the AUX input allows me to connect it to my home speakers, however I have used it without the speakers and the echo dot still has a good volume range. I would really recommend anyone buying one of these and getting to know Alexa. for 50 quid you can't go wrong.

I was excited upon receiving the echo dot, sadly it's failed to live up to expectations. Initially when setting it up it seemed to work ok. Sadly after a few months it fails to understand me if the tv is on, struggles turning the Philips hue lights on and off and at times will only turn one on even though the lights are in a group. I have to turn the unit completely off And back on to resolve the issue.

This was bought to replace Siri as it's meant to be more intuitive, sadly for the things I need it for like turning on the lights it just doesn't live up to expectations. My advice would be to wait until they completely work through the kinks!

So far so good - was getting ready to chuck it through the window when it wouldn't connect to my wifi network - turns out you can't have special characters in the password - so spent the next while updating all other wireless devices. Once connected - job done! Worked immediately with my Yeelights and connected up to Tado too without a hitch. Just a newbie with this at the mo, but it looks like it has potential (and I'm going to need at least another one).

Bought this following the reviews about the echo and the adequate speaker - so have attached the dot to my Bose soundlink. No issues setting up with Virgin hub and no problem linking to my soundlink speakers via bluetooth. Also bought the remote which seems to recognise commands better than without it.

Apps are limited and restricted - if you like American sports then all good - if you are following any other sport apart from the premiership then no good - it doesn't given any brief apart from football prem teams - very poor.

Traffic is only useful if you have a regular same route to work - if, like me, you don''t and travel to different locations daily, then useless as you have to input your destination, and by the time you so that, you might as well look up the traffic online.

Calendar is good if you use Google - useless for me as i use Apple and Outlook. Could go on with other apps restrictions.

Radio stations and playing music is very good, asking about weather, and news is good too - guessing there will be updates etc to make it more UK relevant and maybe more flexibility with the apps

It's okay and for £50 not too concerned - would have been resentful paying the £150 for definite

Quite an amazing kit for some thing that's just the beginning of a new era in connectivity. Wish I had bought this earlier when my father was around. He was blind and remotes for TV, Sky etc along with his favourite radio were a challenge to use without seeing. He would have loved this voice activated one for all gadget. But alas,I lost him recently.
The dot now controls boiler thermostat, LIFX lights and security cam apart from any thing you ask Alexa and theres an answer. It's far better than Apple's Siri which was a huge surprise for me as I didn't expect a retail expert Amazon to beat a tech giant Apple at this game. I stopped using Siri on my iPhone long ago as it was a struggle to get correct answers for various things. Echo Dot is bang on 8 or even 9 out of 10 times. That speaks volumes for it's sensational build and UI.
I ordered one couple weeks ago and loved it so much that I had to order second one for upstairs bedroom. May go for one more for mom's bedroom probably. Quite excited in anticipation of future evolution this gadget will offer and how much more integration would be there with other things. I had the first Motorola brick way back in early '90s and now using an iPhone 7 plus and have witnessed a revolution in mobile phones. In comparison this tech promises a great future and I'd love to see it evolve in many ways.
Recommended for a whole range of reasons apart from just the fancy novelty.
Good luck Amazon.
