I bought this to inject a bit of renewed vigour in to a Thinkpad W500 laptop. It is a few years old now, but was a top notch machine when new, and is still no slouch by any means, but the 7200rpm Toshiba disk has always been a bottle neck, and sometimes it gets bogged down for minutes when windows is doing whatever on earth it does now and then...

I bought a cable so I could attach the drive externally via usb in order to clone the old disk to it. First off, I used the supplied Samsung utility. This will only let you copy the partition the operating system is in, plus one other. Like many laptops, this one has a couple of hidden partitions for booting and also to hold a factory image so it can be refreshed if required. The clone software won't copy these. Not a problem, I thought, the laptop is so old now I don't want the original factory image now anyway. The clone took well over 2 hours to copy about 70GB of data. I then shut down, swapped the discs, and turned it on.

It wouldn't boot. Leaving the hidden partitions behind had broken the boot information. I had to boot off a windows install cd and repair the system. Following this, as often happens, it booted ok but I had lost the pretty windows 7 boot animation and was instead presented with the old vista green progress bar. None of the bcdedit/bootrec/bootsect incantations I found online would fix this. Despite it only being a minor niggle, I don't like problems I can't diagnose or fix, because then I don't know what other problems might be lurking. So I ditched it, put the old disk back in, and used the free EaseUS Todo Backup utility to clone it instead. It is ssd aware so the partitions are aligned correctly, and it lets you copy any or all the partitions, hidden or not, and resize them.

Ok, first off I am not a computer boffin but I am a technically minded person. This product is fantastic if you can get it working! I have trawled the net for information about setting it up. I bought the 850 Pro 512gb version just to be clear!

You will need to purchase a startech sata to usb lead (from Amazon) as it does not come in the box (apparently some external cases cause the drive not to be recognised)

The migration software DOES NOT WORK WITH WINDOWS 10, every time I tried to find the drive to copy it, the software did not recognise it so I couldn't copy my old drive, after many tries I visited Samsungs website and found version 4.7 (the disk was 4.5 but after self checking said there was no update!!!) After downloading 4.7 and overwriting 4.5 it still didn't work! Now I was really frustrated so I went looking on the net I found a forum with lots of people having the same problem, they had even contacted Samsung who admitted the migration software didn't work with windows 10 but there is a solution, download a cloning software like Macrium Reflect and copy your hard drive which I did and then after fitting the 850 into my laptop surprise surprise the migration software recognised it as a Samsung drive and allowed me to do all the optimisation etc.. It now works brilliantly, very quick indeed.

I hope this will help somebody else and save you some time and frustration! I have knocked a star off for the software problems.

Buying this drive has totally revolutionized my machine. I have had a computer since the days of the CBM 64 and no matter what extra hard drive or graphic card or even motherboard that I've purchased nothing has impressed me as much as this. I knew it was going to boot faster that was a given but two minutes down to 16 seconds fully laden and ready to go just shows you what to expect.

Copying large files is a breeze between old and new drive, I did a non scientific test of transferring a gig between old style and the ssd drives and the speed up was amazing. Even things like Directory Opus respond much much faster it's like the cpu has now developed ESP!

The software that comes with it is more than adequate for cloning your existing drive or you can install fresh which I did.

Expensive as they are when I can afford 3tb SSD's that will be my next 5 purchases, so Mr Samsung if your reading this let me know.

I play Elite Dangerous and it loads in a breeze and any hard loading does not cause the dreaded stutter in graphics.
This simple upgrade has made computing a joy again, a real joy.

I bought this item after reading a review that changing an HDD to a SSD makes an unbelievable difference to the performance of a laggy PC/laptop. I had bought a laptop a couple years back with a reasonable specification which my wife was using or should I say trying to use. She only used it intermittently but on a decreasing time spiral because it was taking 10 minutes to boot open and she was constantly suffering the old spinning cursor syndrome.

I'd learned that Macbooks didn't suffer the performance issue due to the use of SSD's so I set about investigating buying a brand new laptop with an SSD installed.

I then learned that you could swap out an old hard drive (HDD) for a new SSD which allegedly would banish the spinning cursor woes of poor performance.

So I thought what the heck - let's try it.

I purchased a Sata/USB lead for a few pounds, downloaded a free cloning tool from CNET and the ordered this Samsung SSD which arrived yesterday.

I had cloned the drive and installed it inside 90 mins then the came the moment of truth - THE BIG SWITCH ON!!!

All I can say is WOW - what a difference - this laggy, slow running, nerve wrecking, frustration building machine has been transformed into a rocket ship.

I have just ordered another of these drives for my personal machine as it would be madness not to.
