5.0 out of 5 stars Just perfect for backup and offload of holiday videos and photos
By Vol-au-vent on 8 April 2018
My goal was to go on holiday without a computer and still be able to (a) backup video recorded to microSD cards (b) if I ran out of microSD card space, move the files to a large USB disk so I could record more video. RAVPower to the rescue! I bought the filehub quite a while ago. I just returned from a holiday where every evening I offloaded microSD cards with 4K video from GoPro and Sony cameras to my faithful WD My Passport portable 500GB USB disk. The filehub does exactly what I want. I love it.

Here's what you do.
1. If necessary, charge the filehub via micro USB. On my recent holiday, the file hub was still charged enough from my previous holiday to work right away. Once charged it will not need a power cable. My one charge lasted eight days of on and off holiday filming over eight days.
2. Plug your SD, or microSD card in an SD adapter, into the filehub
3. Plug your USB disk into the filehub. The filehub powers the external disk via its USB cable (if your disk is portable, as in the WD My Passport series).
4. Press and hold the button on the filehub a few seconds and leave it to boot in around half a minute
5. On your phone, connect to the wifi that the filehub has created
6. Launch the filehub app, which is rock solid reliable
7. Select, with two clicks, all the files on the SD card
8. Click "move to" and select your portable USB disk
9. Click "paste" and watch it start to move all your files, then go and have a cup of tea

The filehub moves a 1.5GB 4K video from memory card to USB disk in two minutes and five seconds, which equates to a gigabyte in 83 seconds. I moved a large number of files each evening without any retries or errors. As shown in the picture, the only cable you need is a USB cable from filehub to your external disk.

In summary, this compact device allows fuss-free transfer or backup to your USB portable disk of your photos and videos held on SD cards or microSD via an adapter (usually supplied with the memory card). I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hugely versatile and an outstanding value for money
By Jack Wright on 13 May 2018
This is one of those products that you wish you knew about earlier...
Also, long review incoming!

The build quality is sturdy and robust. It doesn't squeak when squeezed, and is primarily made of matte plastic with a glossy rim. It's very good. The button isn't wobbly, and the device has a professional look that large reputable companies also give.

For £40, I don't think you can go wrong with the amount of useful features this device has. It's one of those devices that if you were to bring on holiday and break (or lose - assuming nothing's attached to it) you won't be too concerned. Of course, missing its features and the money you spend on it is practically the worst that can happen but it isn't a hard hit on your insurance like a laptop! It's also FAR lighter than a laptop, and makes bringing it to places less of a hassle.

What's the concept?
- Well, when you're travelling you want to be able to backup or store all of your photos in one place. Traditionally, you would bring more SD cards or a laptop for transfers. Now with this, you can do a laptop's work with your phone linked to this device.

- Secondly, what if your hotel has poor WiFi? You've arrived at your destination with 1, 2, 3 or more other family members and accessing the internet is hard because the WiFi signal isn't good. Additionally, the hotel has an Ethernet port on the wall but you've only ever had one device attached at a time in the past and it would be cool if everyone was to get their fair share of internet on all of their devices...

- Oh no! Now your phone has run out of charge! Missed a good opportunity to take photos, or add to your Snapchat story.

Well, this little device has a virtually flawless fix for all of those scenarios.

Now lets talk features! It has three primary features:
- Power bank (6000mAh)
- File transfers between two mediums (USB 2.0 and SD)
- Portable router for on-the-go WiFi (it needs a WiFi supply like an Ethernet port or existing WiFi to connect to - it isn't a MiFi)

FILE TRANSFERS -
So, you can transfer files in-between a USB drive and SD card. If you want to get experimental, you can bring a USB hub and/or a SD to micro-SD converter for more than just 2 mediums connected at once using NTFS (the same file system used on Windows computers).
The limits of what's connected is as follows; SD card up to 64GB, USB HDD/FLASH up to 4TB using NTFS/FAT16/FAT32 with a maximum of 4 USB devices connected. The power supplied to the devices can hit a cap, and the unit can potentially struggle to power up two large hard disks.

Using the app, or web-app, you can plug in your devices and access the files straight away. Then, you can choose in bulk what files you would like to manage and cut or copy to a new destination. It also allows you to create new folders, and manage files. Lastly, it has a previewer built in so you can view your images as you manage them.

File types it supports FOR PREVIEW (doesn't mean non-supported can't be moved to a new location):
Imagery:
- jpg
- tiff
- bmp
- non-animated gif

Videos:
- mp4
- mov
- m4v
- avi

Music:
- mp3
- aac
- m4a
- wav
- aiff

Now, you can also transfer photos from your Android or iPhone device to another medium, too. Except the only difference between the last setup is your phone wirelessly uploads the files to the FileHub, then the FileHub places them in the location your chose. It's equally as seamless don't worry.

PORTABLE ROUTER -
The portable router feature of this device is just so useful. If your hotel has an Ethernet port you can use it's wireless access point mode as means of connecting your devices wirelessly to the Ethernet port using 802.11 b/g/ or n (not ac). This means you can plug a cable between the FileHub and the port on the hotel wall and create your OWN dedicated WiFi point for multiple people to connect to! What's great is that you're now guaranteed full bars of signal and the best speeds your accommodation can offer (to an extent*). Excellent for letting the kids watch YouTube in relax time, and looking at new destinations to visit on your stay. Peace of mind!

*I plugged in an Ethernet cable between my home router and the FileHub and had top download speeds of 37Mbps. Our broadband tariff is 350Mbps so I really did push the wireless limits of this thing. Plenty for holiday internet use!

You can make your WiFi hotspot more personal by changing the SSID and password of the WiFi connection. I named mine "Jacks Hub", so when I go to Florida later this year I can say to my family "Yeah, go to your WiFi settings and connect to the one called 'Jacks Hub'. The password is..."

What's also cool is that the FileHub doesn't need to just work over Ethernet - it can work over an existing WiFi too and act as a battery powered extender. So, if the hotel gives us a complicated username and password system, I can simplify the process with a new wireless network extended by the device and use that instead. Or if there's a tricky hotspot, I can place the device there and boost it.

Now, as your phone is connected to the device through a custom WiFi hotspot you can kill two birds with one stone and use it to interact with the device to control it, change settings, and manage files. It's also Chromecast friendly, so you can connect your Chromecast to the WiFi hotspot and preview photos on a TV. Now THAT's useful!!

If you can't get the app to work your your device - no fear. There's a web-app that does exactly the same thing. The only difference is using a web browser instead of the app. Just go to 10.10.10.254 in the URL bar and log in!

POWER BANK -
This is used to charge your USB powered devices on the go. It doesn't support fast charge.

The device itself is charged via an included micro-USB cable that's approximately 70cm long. I have noticed the charge-time of the device itself isn't fast, and it could be advisable to bring another larger, and faster charging power bank to give the FileHub hours or days of juice to use (as the dedicated chip inside is VERY low power)! The micro-usb connection charges the device with 1.6 amps of current which for 6000mAh can take a long time to fully charge on 0%!

Charging other devices is OK. It supplies 1 amps or current to a chargeable device. That is not fast, but it isn't very slow.

Ravpower say that the 6000mAh battery can typically do 2-3 charges of an average smartphone before running flat.

PROS AND CONS -
Pros:
- Hugely versatile
- Makes every holiday more hassle free
- Easy to use, and has all the file management features you need
- Compact
- Light
- Well built
- Great design
- Big battery
- Big support for file types
- 1 year warranty + 6 months for product registration

Cons:
- App could do with a polish. Some areas of text can be poorly spelled and the GUI can look stretched depending on the device.
- Only 64GB or below memory cards are supported.
- Can take a long time to charge the device, and charge other devices
- No USB 3.0 support so read/writing to an external USB 3.0 HDD isn't giving you the shortest time

Overall I am more excited to bring my DSLR and two GoPros to Florida this year! I don't have to worry about limited memory space anymore. The FileHub makes everything seamless and easy. Highly recommended, product is worth the money all the way. £40 is OUTSTANDING value for what you get!
