Super slick video streaming and KODI sideloading too!

Super slick video streaming and KODI sideloading too!
The Amazon Fire TV comes on instantly from stand-by mode and the menu style is like Netflix whereby you navigate by scrolling up and down and left and right. You also have the option to voice or text search Amazon TV using the remote. The Amazon Fire TV box gives you super slick video streaming from all major sources and the option of sideloading Kodi. Right at the top of the on-screen menu is "Recent" which is usually where I go to as you can resume watching box sets from there. Or if you sideload Kodi, you can have the Kodi app launch from there (see picture) - there is a lot of info on the net on how to download, install and set up Kodi to run on Amazon Fire TV and it works very well and does as is expected. It is great for watching Prime TV and also Netflix and BBC iPlayer as these seem to load a lot faster than when using my smart TV apps. One thing that threw me is that I set the device up whilst connected to a computer monitor running at 60hz. I then plugged it into the TV and the Fire TV seemed to stay on the 60Hz setting which resulted in a terrible jittery picture. To fix this you just need to go into settings and change the display rate to 50Hz and it will return to smooth playback. The device itself is very small - see the picture for a comparison with a Sky box and there is no HDMI cable supplied with it.All in all, a very good device for Prime TV, mainstream streaming services and Kodi to boot!

In a nutshell:
Amazon's Fire TV is a great piece of kit, bringing digital content to our non connected bedroom TV. Unit is simple to set up, small and unobtrusive, remote is simple and works well and streaming is smooth and good quality.

Bit more detail:
We bought Fire TV to get Amazon Prime Instant on the bedroom TV and the unit has delivered as expected, having Netflix is a bonus if we ever decide to switch and Plex (which I have not fully explored yet) should allow streaming of content from my PC (or any other device) direct to the TV. Other supported apps like Spotify and TuneIn mean music too.

Setup is straight forward, logging in took two attempts but the software actually prompted me to reset and try again. Navigation is fairly straight forward though the Prime content is very much more prominent than the other apps (as you would expect).

The unit is a small 10cm square black box with a few ports on the back and a single small white light on the front when active. As the remote is connected by Bluetooth the unit can be hidden behind the TV and we have not noticed the light when the room is dark.

The remote is smaller than your average TV remote and has just the bare minimum of buttons to keep things simple. The main feature of the remote is the voice search button which you hold down, the screen prompts you to speak and then the results are shown a second or so later. So far it has been very accurate, though I don't have a heavy accent so couldn't comment any further.

One thing I have been particularly impressed with is that the Fire TV appears to buffer programmes before you start watching meaning they start instantly when you click play, no whirring circle. This has happened for series we have been watching and I assume would be the unit predicting what we will watch next.

Overall very happy so far.

This little box essentially makes any TV a Smart TV. I have a Smart TV and I still think it is wonderful. MY Smart TV is slow (they might have got quicker, mine is about 3 and a half years old now), navigating to the smart hub takes a minute or 2 to load, getting to the app you want takes another couple of minutes. Navigating or searching for a specific thing is painful, if it lets you. Then there is the problem with file types, some wont play, some will play but you cant skip through them.

Then came Fire TV. It set up within a minute, the hardest thing is remembering where I put the card with my wifi code. HDMI to TV and then on the wifi (there is an ethernet port if you are able to give it a wired connection). It comes preloaded with your amazon account details, which is a nice touch.

Straight off the bat it gives you access to the Amazon Video library (I am a Prime Member so have the Prime Instant Videos). It is easy to navigate (this includes navigating other apps too), responsive and quick to flick around and between shows and the voice search really does work! (as an Xbox/Kinect owner I know companies claim voice recognition to work, but it is almost always quicker to navigate with a controller - the Fire TV is the first thing to work as well as you hope). The voice recognition is limited to search results from Amazon Video though.

Adding apps is easy, for Netflix, Plex (a great little media server) and others. The only one missing so far is a proper Youtube app (I have a 3rd party app that works OK). I am an iTunes/iPhone/iPad user so bought an AirPlay app for the Fire TV that lets me stream iTunes through the TV and my surround speakers in the lounge, but there is a built in music app that will play from Amazon Music if you have it, or your music library if it is on the network.
Overall, it is fast and easy to use and delivers excellent picture quality and surround sound. If you dont have a smart TV (or have an old not so smart TV like me) I would fully recommend this, it has made watching online content and files off my computer so pleasant.

Edit: 1 year on!
I continue to believe the Fire TV is worth its 5 star rating. I use it regularly for watching online videos and streaming films or music from my PCs harddrives. I even bought my Dad one for Christmas and to prove it is easy to navigate my Mum managed to watch a film all on her own (a major feat for her, she struggled to turn the TV off mute for the Strictly final!).
