Stopping to read a map when cycle touring hammers your average pace and making a wrong turn can add hours to a journey. Smart phone GPS is the obvious answer but it drains the battery in a few short hours. This device when paired with a hub or bottle dynamo is the answer. Generate power as you cycle along to keep the phone battery fully charged and enjoy on screen maps. Would also work well for charging other usb powered devices (such as GoPro cameras).
Things to consider when buying a USB charger to work on a bike dynamo:
Voltage regulation - you want nice smooth 5v so as to not damage your expensive electronics (this device regulates at 5v and 1A)
A cache battery - if you are cycling too slow to charge a power hungry device then you can still benefit by charging a cache battery

To get the full 5 stars a little more water proofing would have been handy (but I guess this is a limitation of a USB connection being the weak point) and a little more power output. The device charges the iPhone at about 10mph but is limited to 1A (I think the iPhone can take up to 3A) so when you are going faster the energy is wasted. That said it keeps the phone charged when using the gps constantly.

Good looking product. Received without dynamo cable, makes you wonder if it's a second and of course useless without the cable. Very disappointing. Be careful when you buy.

I bought this as a low cost alternative to the B&M E-Werk system. You can buy this for between £60 - 80, which is as much as half the price of the E-Werk. When you consider the E-Werk doesn't include a cache battery as standard (it will cost you a further £70) the USB-Werk, which has a built in battery cache, becomes the best all round charging system straight out of the box.

It is designed for the most popular devices; mobile phones, smartphones, mp3 players, and, most importantly, Bike GPS devices such as Garmin, Bryton and Mio Cyclo, which is the make I use. Any system with a standard, mini, or micro USB connection can be charged with a current of up to 650 mAmps @ 5Volts. That is sufficient for the most common voltage and charge rate (3.7V~500mA) found in such mobile devices.

The USB-Werk comes with a detachable Female USB cable attachment. If you do not want to use your devices charge cable you will need to buy the appropriate spare E-Werk mini & micro USB attachments. Each USB-variant cable attachment costs about £6 but it is worth it as it has a waterproof fitting to the charger and reduces the chance of detachment on route. If the items are not available on Amazon the cheapest place, with guaranteed stock, is from Starbike.com in Germany. They charge about £5 for delivery to the UK and speak good English so are well worth checking out.

In test, I used my Mio Cyclo 505HC GPS system and ran it down to about 80% charge before attaching the USB-Werk. Within about 20 minutes the GPS was fully charged and remained fully charged for the 3 hour bike ride. The USB fittings didn't come loose, even over rough ground. I attached the device to my SON hub dynamo and clipped the charger to the crossbar using the rubber loop. It can be fitted more permanently with supplied tie clips (2 sizes) but as it can be easily 'half inched' I like the ability to remove it quickly. It weighs about 55gm with usb cable attachment and is as wide as a standard steel frame crossbar, about as long as my man's index finger and as deep. It is very unobtrusive. Cables are robust and fittings are weather proof so long as they are screwed together correctly. No need to over tighten the fittings as they are fitted with a rubber grommet to keep water out, so a snug finger tight fit is good enough.

For me, being well designed, well made, small compact size and being fit for purpose are the key reasons for buying the system. The fact it is at least half the price of the all-singing, all-dancing E-Werk system is a bonus. Being made in Germany, it is typically a well thought out design with all the functions and spares most other countries barely consider. Function and Form are the two standards of German manufacturing and Busch & Muller is no exception.

If you have any other device with greater charging demands, though I can't think what, then you need to use the E-Werk system and maybe even the extra battery cache. If like me and most of the world, you only have a smartphone, GPS or an MP3 player then the USB-Werk is all you need, with maybe the additional variant USB cables to enhance its function to top of the line.

OK, I think I'm now in a position to review this... At first, I wasn't convinced and nearly sent it back. I have quite a large samsung phone, and tried charging it as I was cycling along with the screen on full brightness, a load of apps using data, and a GPS map in constant use. The phone battery continued discharging when plugged into this device - in fact, I couldn't tell if it was making any difference. I then bought a solar panel instead, which chucks out way more power. But... I think cycle touring off the grid requires a different philosophy. Just how we learn to use hardly any water when camping, the same is true of phone battery usage... and this does just about pump out enough juice (like 0.5 amps, 4.7 volts - equivalent to a 'trickle charge') to get by. I now use it charge a smaller phone with a navigation app, which I set on plane mode (with the GPS on) - and it will keep this charged all day, with plenty left over - so I can plug a power bank or my main phone in for a bit of extra charge. I think the point is - it's GUARANTEED power, which is quite reassuring if you're in the back of beyond. So I've changed my mind about it - and conclude it's a good purchase. Also reasonable value.

Arrived eventualy, after a £30 price rise, fiddly to wire into dyno hub, i joined the none polaritly wires for light & e werk together, forgoing the piggy back clips provided, conected power bank to check, e work started charging imeaditly, enough power stored in the unit, so no need for the back up battery they offer, i keep mine hidden away in handle bar bag, ready for 2022 already, as its fitted to my tourer... 🥂
