Review

Classic Rock Magazine – November 2012 – 8/10
“ Thick As A Brick stands as one of the great 70s concept albums, but it can be heard now as a part of a lifetime narrative"
MOJO - ****
“ There’s an honesty, charm and fantastic energy to Thick As A Brick that the passage of time simply can’t erode.”

Uncut – 7/10
“ Mixing acoustic guitar/flute folksiness with crunching rock heft, prog curlicues, classical allusions and a tinge of jazz fusion topped with dense and complex lyrics, it has stood the test of time, It has stood the test of time surprisingly well.”

Firstly let me say that I'm not going to review the music - this is a Tull classic, and I'm assuming anyone who has come to this page knows it well enough (if not, just buy this anyway). Instead I want to talk about the package itself, here released in a "40th Anniversary" edition.

I have bought Thick as a Brick many times - on vinyl, Mini LP, several CD versions etc. I hesitated to buy it again, but boy am I glad I pre-ordered this. The music comes in a hard cover book format (roughly the size of a paperback book). The newspaper from the original vinyl release is reproduced in a large format (so it's readable!) In this format the newspaper is 40 pages long (that's a page for every year of release). They used the original textured paper for this section, which is a nice addition.

Next up is the "Colour Supplement". This is printed on high-quality glossy paper stock, and is full of pictures I've certainly never seen before. It has various sections including: 11 page article by Dom Lawson; 6 page article with Robin Black (producer); 6 page article with Eric Brooks (tour manager); 8 page interview with Ian Anderson, Jeffrey Hammond, and Martin Barre from 1997; 18 page section of pictures "On Tour", and the lyrics in Italian and German (no English though).

There are two discs - the first is the newly remixed version in stereo. Then we have a DVD that includes a 5.1 DTS and Dolby Digital Surround mix. Also we get the new stereo mix in 96/24 PCM, along with the original 1972 stereo mix also in 96/24 PCM. As a bonus (!) we get a 1972 radio ad.

Steve Wilson - who did a fantastic job of Aqualung recently - is back to do this new remix. The quality is just - well the only word I can think of is "obscene". Someone pay this guy to revisit the entire Tull catalog. I'd gladly buy every one all over again.

My final thought here is this release is such a credit to all involved. Talk about being put together with love, care, and attention. This is worth ten stars, let alone five. I expected a lot, and got even more. What a release. Thanks to all that had a hand in putting this out. Fantastic!

Thick as a Brick as always been my ultimate Tull album and this package with it's presentation of an 104 page hardbound book is well worthy of the price here and looks fabulous. For me though my main purpose for purchasing this edition was for the 5.1 mix and not the new mix which is on the CD to which I still have not played yet.

Reading through some of many varied reviews here I can see that a couple of them have issues at around the first part of side 1 of the DVD. I cannot say I have this problem myself and so far have only played the DVD in DTS 96/24 5.1 and can honestly say I have not found a single fault with it, and the sound quality and mix is purely fantastic.

Once again Steve Wilson has done a cracking job on the mix and the overall balance in projecting the right sounds in the right places. Wonderful the way he has really thought of what to put in these places to project the sound and pan out superbly, in comparison to both Vinyl and previous CD releases to which I do have, I can honestly say this mix brings the album back with new leash of life, and is far better for it. I take my hat off to the guy for this mix, and certainly will be hoping for more great classic Tull albums from the 70's to get the same treatment here.

For me this is simply the best release of the year, and not only does it make great music, it gives you a book to read at the same time. Marvellous stuff and I would highly recommend it 100%.

Now where the hell is Biggles?

What a year it's been for us humble Tull fans! First the surprise release if the incredible TAAB2, then the best live performances from Mr Anderson and crew for, well, a very long time.
...and now this beautiful, wonderful, exquistely crafted remix of the original TAAB album.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, Ian and everyone involved in this project (particularly Steve Wilson, who somehow manages to retain every tiny drop of the original warmth & feel of the album, yet make it sound completely fresh & new - It's almost as if he's removed the balaclava I'd been wearing each time I listened it over the past 40 years.) It really is FANTASTIC!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nicht bloß ein Nachdruck!

Diese wurde auch nach der Zerschlagung von EMI mit Erfolg fortgesetzt: A Passion Play, WarChild, Minstrel in the Gallery, Too Old to Rock ‘n’ Roll: Too Young to Die!, Aqualung (als umformatierte Version des Boxsets), Stand Up, Songs from the Wood, Heavy Horses, This Was, Stormwatch, A und eine Neuauflage von Benefit folgten.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thick As A Brick unveiled
Reviewed in the United States on 9 November 2012
The new re-mix of "Thick Is A Brick" is simply amazing. It's like a veil has been taken off to show a clearer, more vibrant sound image. The packaging replicating the original newspaper is excellent and the original mix is here in 96 khz/24 bit sampled glory. But the new hi-resolution 96khz/24 bit stereo re-mix and 96khz/24 bit DTS surround sound re-mix by Stephen Wilson are the main centerpieces here.
Mr. Wilson has done yet another masterful job, equal to the one he did on the "Aqualung" remix a couple of years ago. The muddy, slightly boxy sound of the original re-mix is gone and with both the original mix and the new mix on the same DVD it is easy to compare them.
On the new mix Ian Anderson's voice has a clarity and vibrance to it never heard before. The mix is open, clear and rich and the instruments and voice on the more complex parts of the album are more clearly delineated and less cluttered than the original mix. There is absolutely no comparison between previous releases of this classic album. The Wilson mix will stand on its own as the definitive re-mix of this album for years to come. The 5.1 mix gives any Tull fan the chance to listen to this album like he/she has never heard it before and it is definitely worth it. Highly recommended for new and old listeners!
