DVD drives are standard now, but occasionally they die. this lead to the purchase of this sony product. I wanted something to install CDs to itunes and have a sata connection. This does exactly that. The DVD drive processes CDS between 16x - 22x into itunes so is decent performance. The tray is a little bit wobbly but no more so than any other brand of drive I have seen. This product does NOT come with any mounting hardware or cables, so be warned if you do not have a tool-less case design. My last Sony DVD made a racket when burning but this seems quite reserved. It isn't silent, but the disc still has to spin, so some noise should be expected. A slot drive design seen in apple laptops, has probably a quieter spin. But a DVD isnt something thats operating all the time so the brief noise you have burning a CD doesn't seem so bad.

Life Span of my last model was 4 years. at £17 ( including postage )this isn't a bank breaker if it dies after 4 years.. chances are it will outlive the rest of the components in your pc, especially if you like a high end machine.

Does exactly as you expect. No issues at all with detection or hardware. Games/DVD's run perfectly on it.

I have not made any CD/DVD's using this drive yet, although I doubt there would be any issues.

This product is manufactured by Sony, despite not having the front logos as you see on most drives. The attached hardware sticker clearly states it is made by "Sony Optiarc". The front is simplistic and suits black cases very well.

My only complaint which stops this from being a 5 star product is the drive when spinning at 24x is quite noisy. Clearly being heard over the CPU fan and causing some case vibration. While playing DVD's this is not an issue however. With some padding around the drive this noise can be reduced.

If your looking for a DVD writer for your system build as I was. Look no further this is it.

This drive seems great: fast, reliable and with a flashing light. However, it is ridiculously noisy!

I bought this drive because among all of my DVD drives which I have stockpiled at home, I could not find not a single one that used SATA instead of IDE. I had just built a new PC from all new parts, and it hadn't occurred to me that I couldn't use an IDE drive, as my new motherboard didn't support it. So I shopped around and bought the cheapest drive that I could find with good reviews and high speed. (this one)

I don't regret buying it, because it *is* very fast, and I just need it for occasional use. However, compared to the vastly superior drives supplied with my previous PC, it sounds like a V8! The old ones came with my desktop from PC Specialist, and operated almost silently, the noise only becoming an issue at full speed. This drive makes a racket even when opening the tray!

Like I say, this isn't a problem if like most users you rarely use it. But if you rip or write a lot of CD/DVDs, then I would suggest spending that little bit extra on a higher quality one.

I've bought two of these and I'm happy with them. They do all you'd expect them to do and they do it very quietly too. My only critisizm would be they seem to be a bit flaky when using DVD-RAM discs. I have some DVD-RAM discs with some backups that were previously burnt using an LG drive. When putting them into the Sony, it would only recognise half of them and wanted to format the rest. Obviously I couldn't do that so I had to refit the LG drive to rescue the data, then re-burn. After some playing about, it became obvious that the Sony is quite picky about which DVD-RAM it'll recognise or throw up as corrupt when they are all perfectly fine/new.

So all in all, I'd recommend this drive for all applications but if you use DVD-RAM's, I'd go for a different brand.

I bought this drive for a new build PC that I was doing on a budget so the main factor in the purchase was price. If your a light user you can't really go wrong with this drive at the price. If your a heavy user I'd recommend buying something a little more expensive as it can be a bit noisy. I had one in another computer for about 4.5 - 5 years without any issues.

- Cheap as chips
- Reliable

Con's

- Can be noisey with the wrong CD.

I'M WRITING THIS REVIEW IN CAPS AS THIS DRIVE IS CURRENTLY BURNING A MIX CD FOR MY SIGNIFICANT OTHER. THE FRONT OF THE UNIT IS MINIMAL, JUST PLAIN BLACK WITH A BUTTON AND HOLE FOR EMERGENCIES. THE UNIT IS MADE TO A HIGH QUALITY AND FITS NICELY IN THE DRIVE BAY, AND WINDOWS & LINUX RECOGNISED IT instantly. Whoo, thank god that's finished. Ok the only problem with it is that it is a touch on the loud side, so if noise is an issue for you, splash out on a more expensive model.

I bought the Sony DVD-Ram Drive because it can read (burn? I don't know because I've never tried to do that) my collection of Panasonic Ram-disks, along with just about everything else (unfortunately, however, the Ram disks have to be removed from their protective cartridge). I would've bought another Japanese-made Panasonic model, but they're only available in the old IDE interface. No SATA 1, 2, or 3.

The trouble with the Sony drive (made in China, naturally, like everything else) is that the drawer keeps shutting without me pressing any button or the tray. One of these days, it's going to damage a disk, and then I'll probably rip the front off it!

I bought it to replace my old LiteON burner which started to fail burning DVDs (although it still burned CDs just fine). I also bought a pack of Verbatim 43550 16x DVD+R discs. The Sony burner did just fine, I have burned already 10 discs form that pack without issues. I'm using Ashampoo free edition.

One day I needed to burn an Ubuntu linux to an old CD-RW disc. Sony failed. Then I put the same CD-RW in my old LiteON, and it succeeded.

It seems I'll have to keep my old LiteON burner for those rare occasions when I need to burn CDs. That's a bit disappointment. This Sony burner is somewhat picky about burning CDs.
