I've been researching lights, what feels like for weeks now. My other light is a Cateye LD610 which I've had for a few years so I decided to put that on my spare bike and treat myself to one for my road bike. My budget was up to around £40. I like the Cateye light I have so initially focused on their range. What I didn't like about the higher priced ones was the fact they attach to the seat with no more than just a thick rubber band. Reviews I read indicated these can be brittle and hence why they are generally supplied with two. So I looked at other manufacturers and the "rubber band" setup is a common theme. Eventually I narrowed it down to a couple of lights and I was about to press the "Buy" button on one of them until I came across the RSP Astrum (from a cycling forum). Having reviewed this I was mightily impressed so for less than £9 I thought I would take a punt.

My criteria was basically: bright (tick), attach to the seat frame using a bracket and not a band (tick), vertical and horizontal orientation (tick), flashing modes (tick), side visibility (tick), USB rechargeable (cross) - it takes 2 AAA batteries.

The batteries left me with a dilemma but I thought if's costly with batteries I can always get rechargeable ones. Or if I have to change then 2 or 3 times a year using normal batteries we are only talking a few pounds. The important thing is to be seen at night. When this is switched on, oh boy, are you seen at night. Very bright. I compared it to the Cateye one I have and it's a lot brighter.

Word of warning if you buy one. There are no instructions so it's like Krypton Factor to know how to get into the battery compartment. I had to Google it and you need a coin to prise the front away from the back. Other than that nothing else to add other than I'm going to buy a second one for my spare bike and "retire" the Cateye.

A great light. It feels high-end and heavy in the hand, and is absurdly bright. The switch/button is solid and cycles through options reliably, so you're not wasting time trying to turn it off, as you often see with cheaper lights.

The mechanism holding it to your bike could probably be a little better for the price, however. I have seen more secure fittings on cheaper lights (the part that ties it on to your seat post). As for the bit that the light slides into, this doesn't feel overwhelmingly secure. It's flexible, so it can probably absorb some of the shock from hitting a pothole, but it slides in and out a little too easily and makes you feel uneasy that you're going to be forking out again soon.

However, that hasn't actually happened yet, and the fittings may prove to be deceptively secure - and the main thing is that this light will make you very, very visible. If anything, I'm scared that someone is going to be blinded by it and ram me in anger.

Nice bright light.... But not for very long
I thought this was a great light and used it a few times in dry weather without any problems, luckily the weather has been good this year. I have used it today in dry weather but some road spray. The light got wet inside and stopped working. Requested a refund and will look at getting something waterproof instead.

Just bought my 5th one of these. Now all the family bikes are properly lit up.
I've tried a few different lights over the years and this is the best in terms of light output, positive switching, battery life, waterproofness and value for money.
Only slight niggle would be the stroboscopic flash modes being too fast. They do slow down a bit when the battery is getting low making the mode that flashes between the two LEDs just about acceptable for other road users. Although, in fairness, this seems to be a problem with all LED lights (front and rear).
The bracket is a tool free fit and fine for the job, although the type that use a screwdriver are more solid.
The light clips to the bracket with a nice positive 'click', and is easily removed. The clip also means you can fit it to clothing or (as I have done in one case) the rear of a saddle bag.

Having researched for a rear light I decided on this one. Only has three lighting modes which should be enough for most people particularly when you have to cycle through the modes to switch off. You use a coin to separate the two sections to fit the two supplied AAAs. The two halves of the case are not flimsy but quite tough with a seal between to keep the rain out.on the the back is a molded clip which again is sturdy. This fits into the supplied clamp for attachment to the bike. I have just used the clip itself to attach it to the back plate on my rack. The light itself is small and neat and extremely bright but not stupidly so! Reviews of lights seem to suggest that the brighter the light the better. Yes it is good to have bright lights but not to a point where they dazzle other cyclists and indeed car drivers. In the letter of the law these lights can be deemed illegal. Anyway back to sum up this light, I would say that if you are looking for a rear light don't waste your time looking further, buy this one and I'm sure you will not have wasted your money.

Very bright (says don't look directly at it on the box - I believe them) the only area that could have been improved is the use of a mounting that doesn't require taking the seatpost out
