Don't install the buggy netgear software supplied!!!

I was having all sorts of problems with this device when I first got it. I had followed the instructions and installed the Netgear wireless software before connecting the USB dongle. The connection was dropping all the time, it couldn't cope with encryption, it was just a mess. I tried the upgrade patch, even worse if anything. The I uninstalled the netgear software and decided just to plug the USB dongle in - windows accessed the CD-ROM for the necessary .inf and drivers, and then it ran using the Windows Zero Configuration (i.e. Windows manages the wireless connection). I had actually been asking the netgear software to do this before when I installed the CD-ROM, but it ignored me and carried on making the netgear software managed the connection. So my advice would be if you want this to work:

a) Put the CD ROM in for the drivers

b) connect the USB Adapter

c) let windows find the driver on the CD-ROM and install

d) Use windows to manage the device - NOT buggy netgear software

I emailed tech support about this and they weren't any help, so hopefully anyone with problems with this might find the above solution handy.

What a nightmare...

I'd advise avoiding this adapter... I bought it because I thought it would work well with my Netgear router (which I'm happy with), but it's turned out to be a real lemon. I get loads of blue-screen freezes and the connection drops multiple times each day. I thought perhaps Netgear would be aware of this and have a solution, but googling the model number, I soon learned that many people were reporting the same problem and that Netgear didn't appear to be doing anything about it. The suggestion seems to be that the problem is with the firmware but that Netgear themselves can't do anything about it and the original provider of the firmware isn't coming up with a solution. So perhaps not Netgear's fault, but I'd still avoid this piece of kit.

WPN111 is pants!

I got a couple of these about a year ago, mainly because I have a Netgear Rangemax wireless cable router. You would think (well I did) that these two would be perfect for each other.

I've had problems after problems with these nasty little things. I know my way around computers and stuff reasonably well, but they have defeated me to get them to work without problems. You often have to disconnect them and reconnect to get them to work. They drop out when they feel like it, without any obvious reasons. I ended up using a cheap one I got from a computer fair and that works perfectly. The Netgear router is great, the WPN111 is a disgrace to the Netgear name. Overpriced and unreliable. AVOID IT!!

I bought this product about a year ago, after I had problems with the internal telephone wiring at home. Unlike many of your reviewers I have had absolutely no problem with installing it or getting it to run and, yes, I am using XP SP2.

I am using it with the Netgear wireless modem router and the combination has given me speeds of up to 24 mps despite there being several concrete walls beween the transmitter and the USB. The extension cable helps too, as that can move the receiver to a good signal location while the computer stays tucked away beneath the desk.

This is rubbish!

It works intermittently, fails for no reason and then won't reconnect. Sometime it works for days on end, others it goes in 10 minutes.

30% of the time you can unplug / plug the cable in again, the other 70% of the time you have to restart the computer. There is no other way.

The router's fine it's just the USB adapter.

The phone support offers no help / doesn't acknowledge there's a flaw with this product.

Just bought the Lm Technologies 802.11g Wireless G USB Network Adapter from Amazon for £9 ish which is far, far superior. It actually works!

From the same position the Lm USB gets a perfect signal (the Netgear only got 2 bars), Windows loads the drivers and all in all it's 20 times better.

When I think of all the hassle the Netgear caused me and the amount of time I spent trying to sort it, assuming it was the computer etc etc I really wonder whether I'll ever buy another netgear product.

Do not buy the Netgear! There are many better cheaper alternatives

Blue Screen Of Death

Have been using the adapter for 3 months fault free. Now i get a blue screen of death whenever i try to download large amounts. This is a known problem , but Netgear has not provided any solutions. Do not waste your money on this USB.

Annoyingly unreliable

I got this for my Vista Media Center, and it's terribly unreliable. Connecting it to the network is easy, but every so often - typically after a few hours - the connection simply drops.

Sometimes, disconnecting and reconnecting the device brings the connection back, and other times a complete reboot is required. This simply isn't good enough, and there seems to be no help forthcoming from Netgear - although I have had good experiences with their routers and other gear.

I have now given up and have bought a £9.99 replacement, which works perfectly. Shame on you for selling inferior, expensive, unsupported kit, Netgear.

Why pay more for less?

Bought the WPN111 Adapter with the WPN824 MIMO-G Wireless Router due to living in an older house and the need for reasonable performance through thick walls. Have not been able to get anywhere near 108mps and even in the same room the most I get is 48mps with a good signal. Tested the router with my work laptop which has an internal Dell Wireless 1370 WLAN Mini-PCI Card and found it had a better range and constantly sits at 54mps with an excellent signal. According to the newsgroups I'm not the only one with these WPN111 Adapter problems so my advice would be to not waste your money on Netgear and go for a cheaper setup.
