Depeche Mode by Anton Corbijn: 81-18 Hardcover – Illustrated, 26 Mar. 2021
Purchase options and add-ons
In November 2020, Depeche Mode were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and Dave Gahan, accepting the honour, said: “I’d like to thank Anton Corbijn who thank God came in at the right time and actually made us look cool.” Also in the fall of 2020, TASCHEN released the limited edition Depeche Mode by Anton Corbijn (81–18) signed by Depeche Mode and Anton Corbijn, and it became one of the fastest selling collector’s editions in the publishing company’s history. This equally epic, but more wallet friendly XL edition, is a testament to Corbijn’s unique vision, and indeed “cool” as Gahan acknowledged so movingly in his speech; a detailed illustrated history of how Corbijn, who became in 1986 the band’s de facto creative director, and helped cement Depeche Mode’s reputation as the biggest cult band in the world.
Featuring over 500 photographs from Corbijn’s extensive archives, some never seen before, including formal and informal portraits from places such as Madrid, Hamburg, the California desert, Prague and Marrakech (some taken during the making of iconic videos such as “Enjoy the Silence” and “Personal Jesus”); a multitude of off-the-cuff, candid images; and stunning live shots from all their tours since 1988. In addition to the photographs, there are sketches and designs for stage sets and album covers, Corbijn’s handwritten captions throughout the book, placing the reader right in the middle of the shoots, and an extended interview with the Dutch master.
Created with the full collaboration of the band, who share some insights on working with Corbijn, Depeche Mode by Anton Corbijn (81–18) trumpets how one man’s original aesthetic, that has encompassed all of their photography, most of their music videos, album graphics and set designs, helped shape the band’s enduring popularity. Reflecting on his role in Depeche, Corbijn recalls in the book’s introduction: “A lot of it came down to me, and I wanted it to be right for them. I wanted to think for them. To be great for them.” This book is a tribute to the depth and breadth of that greatness, a celebration of one of the most creative and enduring collaborations in rock history.

The photographer
Dutch photographer, videographer, designer and film director Anton Corbijn is best known for his black-and-white photography of artists, which from the be-ginning included musicians, painters and actors. His approach to this work has been hailed as defining a new way of portrait photography with the emphasis on his guiding principle that imperfection is closer to life than perfection. From his humble beginnings as a music fan, he developed into an important globally heard voice in the photography world. For decades he has been a collaborator with many musicians such as Tom Waits, U2, Nick Cave, Metallica, Herbert Grönemeyer, R.E.M. and in this case Depeche Mode! Even after making films with the likes of George Clooney, Robert Pattinson or Philip Seymour Hofmann, he always returned to his first love, photography. He has had many museum shows over the years and resides in Amsterdam.

Review
“He thought they were pop lightweights – then turned them into moody megastars. [Corbijn] recalls his adventures with the band, from desert trips to drug-induced near-death experiences.” ― The Guardian
“We were big fans of Anton’s art before we worked with him and after the amazing results we saw from the first photo sessions and videos, we had no reason to doubt his ideas.” ― Martin Gore
“We finally nabbed him in ’86 and that led to the video for ‘A Question of Time’ in LA. The rest is history.” ― Andrew Fletcher
“Anton was able to give the DM sound, that we were beginning to create, a visual identity.” ― Dave Gahan

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 June 2021Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseIf you're a fan of Depeche Mode you'll undoubtedly be familiar with Anton Corbijn's photography and design, from album covers, through videos, and even to stage designs, and in some respects he's almost an unofficial member of the band because of the amount of time he's spent with them. This book is a collection of photographs he's taken of the band from their earliest days in 1981, through to the most recent time he worked with them on the "Spirit" tour in 2018.
It's a huge, heavy, hardback and arrives shrink wrapped. There's a paper dust cover, and if you remove this the book is backed with embossed linen. It's a lovely thing, but you really need to put it on a table to read it because it's so big and heavy.
The book begins with a brief introduction, followed by an interview with Anton, then a Q&A with the band. These are all repeated at the very end of the book in German and French (which explains the multi-lingual aspect of the book - the rest is all English). The bulk of the book is made up of the photographs, arranged chronologically, and many are accompanied by hand-written notes by Anton. It doesn't take a long time to read - I read the whole thing in an evening - but it's entertaining and often enlightening. At the very end there is also a section devoted to the solo work of Martin and Dave for whom Anton produced some photographs, plus highlights of other work Anton has produced for the band, such as album and single covers.
You won't find every single photo Anton has taken of the band here, so if you have a particular favourite you remember from a magazine, an album, or a tour programme it may or may not appear here, but there are an awful lot I'd never seen before, and as you'd expect from a book from this publisher the paper is thick, glossy, and it's immaculately printed.
Yes, it's big, heavy, and expensive, but if you're a fan of the band, you'll absolutely love it.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 October 2021Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseA must for any Depeche Mode fan. This is a big heavy quality book filled with amazing photos of the band that Anton Corbin has taken over the years that he has worked with them. The photos are accompanied by his handwritten notes on when and where they were taken. There are also some pics that he took for Martin Gore's and Dave Gahan's solo projects. It's a great thing to own and treasure if you love this amazing band as I have done for 40 years.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 September 2021Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseAn absolute must have for a Depeche Mode fan, got it for my dad's birthday (who is their number 1 fan) and he loved it, didn't put it down for over an hour, the photographs alone make this book worth it, I'd highly recommend for that fan in your family, or even for yourself!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 June 2021Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI was reluctant to buy such an expensive book but I'm so glad I did. It is a thing of beauty. Carefully put together, it documents the history of DM through Anton's lens. If you love DM, you'll be glad you spent the money and it will look great in your collection. Shame about the packaging, though. Really, just a flimsy brown envelope is not enough. A friend said to me "Life's too short, buy the book". It was good advice.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 June 2021Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis is an essential purchase for any fan of Depeche Mode. It's a huge and heavy book, full of amazing photographs by Anton Corbijn with some insights from Dave, Martin and Andy. Highly recommended!

MoroReviewed in the United States on 2 August 20215.0 out of 5 stars Absolute must-have for hardcore DM fans
Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseIf you are a hardcore Depeche Mode fan, you NEED this book. The price tag might seem a bit steep for a book, but believe me what you get is worth it. It's massively heavy (truly a "coffee table book" if there ever was one, too heavy to comfortably hold in one's hands for browsing), huge, thick high quality paper with a satiny finish--not too flat, not too shiny. The photos are incredible and many have insightful notes or little stories by Corbijn that give them so much dimension and life.
From Depeche Mode's humble beginnings to where they are now the book is a real journey and there's so much value to be had here, so many never before seen pictures and some you may have seen before, but you can now see in a whole new light.
You owe it to yourself to get this book. It's an essential buy for the hardcore DM fan, you won't regret it. Don't let the price tag scare you, it's worth every penny.
