Suicide Girls: Hard Girls, Soft Light Hardcover – 7 Jan. 2013

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 103 ratings

The SuicideGirls are a collection of more than 2,500 pin-up girls devoted to changing your idea about what makes a woman beautiful ... and they are naked.

Started in Portland, Oregon, by Missy Suicide and her friends in 2001, the SuicideGirls broke conventional notions of beauty and the pin-up girl ideal as defined by men's and women's magazines and the culture at large.

In addition to the millions of visitors that frequent the SG Website, this book will appeal to both men and women (their membership is split nearly equally) who thought the shy, artsy chick with the black eyeliner and nose ring was the sexiest girl in high school (every guy in Silverlake, Williamsburg, and beyond).

About the Author

Combining her love of pin-up photography, music and art with personal ideals of female empowerment nurtured in DIY culture, Missy founded SuicideGirls as a place where a woman can be herself and where her confidence, creativity and uniqueness are what defines her. While it is true that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, Missy found the camera lens of mainstream media a bit myopic for her taste. SuicideGirls began and has grown from a desire to expand mainstream culture's definition of what is beautiful, and to show that it can be realized in a more diverse range of women than those who grace the pages of most fashion magazines and movie posters. What started for Missy as personal expression has now become a revolution.

Raised in Portland, Oregon in what could be described as an eclectic and artistic environment, Missy combines her traditional fine arts training with new media business acumen in the operation of SuicideGirls. In addition, Missy continues to photograph women for the site. Her photography focuses on depicting how each model feels sexiest about themselves in the photos and has inspired a generation of young women to embrace their bodies and showcase their confidence.

Since launching SuicideGirls, Missy has become a voice for the culture on sexuality outside of what mainstream media is reporting. She has been interviewed on issues relating to music, the Internet, pop culture and body image on numerous radio stations and in publications such as the New York Times, Wired, Spin and Elle. Recently featured as one of the top ""12 Sexiest Jobs in Hollywood"" and the ""20 Sexiest Jobs on the Web"", Missy has appeared on HBO, Fox News, the new hit series ""CSI: NY"" on CBS, as well as the two SuicideGirls movies in constant rotation on Showtime. She hosts a weekly SuicideGirls talk radio show on LA's Indie 103.1 and was recently chosen to model as part of peta2's 2008 ""Ink, Not Mink"" celebrity, anti-fur ad campaign.

After falling in love with Suicide Girls: Beautiful Redefined I had to get my hands on this product. Least to say I was not disappointed! SG: Hard Girls, Soft light gives a different and refreshing view on alternative beauty with crisp, professional photography which captured the models perfectly. The lovely ladies featured were tasteful and sexy as well as having stunning artwork! I was also chuffed as some of my favorite suicide girls were captured within Hard Girls, Soft light. Overall I was very pleased with the book and the theme have it a one up over Beauty Redefined.

Suicide Girls new book is an excelent photographic work that combines the most sensual, sexy and wild girls in the world. With very high quality pictures (in all the senses), SG shows, one more time, that women can be beatiful not only in a clasical way, but in the most irreverent too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book

First, from a product quality standpoint, this is well made with a good binding and high quality photos on high quality paper stock.

My one wish for the book would have been that it would have been organized more like the previous book Beauty Redefined. Hard Girls, Soft Light seems to skip from model to model too fast, mostly a single page at a time. I would have liked small 3-4 page sections featuring each model more.

Another poster commented that they wished that there would have been more models with tattoos and piercings. I think that this misses the entire point of SG. SG is about acknowledging a wide range of beauty that is outside the mainstream definition, whether it be through body modification or non-traditional body types or looks. By trying to pigeonhole the models represented into a certain look, you are actually going against the very thing that SG is trying to change. The point of the book is that the models are all different from both each other and the traditional standard (even if they don't have body mods). They all project a different image of beauty.

5.0 out of 5 stars The book of nudes your girlfriend will steal from you
Reviewed in Germany on 2 June 2014
These girls are posing strictly for each other. They are completely self-conscious, however sassy their looks may look and however brazen they may lock eyes with the camera. The special things they share -- perhaps the ink, the nudity, or the youthful spirit of rebellion -- appears to be about breaking conventions of high fashion, main-stream role models and nude photography of the female body. And the book does all that, breaks the conventions all right (not that they really need another assault). Much more interesting though is not what the images contest but what they create: a lovely covenant of girls who subscribe to alternative notions of female beauty, who love to show themselves after literally inscribing these notions of beauty onto their bodies, and who pose collectively, even if there is only one girl in a given picture. What gets me is that they are doing the pictures for themselves, and for each other, and that the book radiates so much warmth and empathy as a result. And, by inference, so much authenticity. It is something like a fable on what authentically feminine nude photography would look like, not because it is cheekier and sassier, but because the cheek and sass is shared -- with other cheeky, sassy chicks. If you want your girlfriend to look at female nudes with you and to like what she sees, this is the book you should get. The most innovative, sensuous and serene volume of nudes I have bought in years, and simultaneously the most tender and warmest one.
