An excellent overview of the Multi 2D bid and associated conventions for anyone wanting to use the Multi for the first time. The book includes just enough detail to make a playable system for a club night while keeping it a simple, enjoyable read. Experienced partnerships will no doubt want to go beyond what is described, if only in the way of fleshing out small details, but this is a great starting point.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Only Mystery is in the Title 12 July 2013
By J. B. Potter - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
The authors effectively present various flavors of the Multi Two Diamond opening popular in Europe. For most North American players (who may play a Multi Two Diamond opening only in high-level competition) the sound discussion of Multi is of only academic interest. Most of us are happy with our two diamond openings as weak two bids, major suit two-suiters, or some three-suited flavor.

Of far greater interest is the very good discussion of defenses to Multi. That section ranges from simple, easily remembered defenses to baroque methods one might watch professional players deploy against each another. North American players accustomed to the ACBL General Convention Chart might find a Multi Two Diamond opening surprising. Time spent studying this volume should prepare one to play duplicate bridge in Europe, on a cruise, or in other contexts where regulating authorities are receptive (rather than restrictive--as at home) towards Multi Two Diamond openings. Players with such intentions and those who fancy themselves bidding theorists should give this small volume their attention.
5.0 out of 5 stars Achtung Multi 1 May 2014

In 2008, the ABCL did a great disservice to American bridge. Multi was listed as a Mid-Chart convention but users were required to pre-alert, have a complete description of the convention and have an copy of the ACBL-approved defenses availed. As a result, Multi has hardly been used at most club games or tournaments and is banned from ACBL games at online sites, such as BBO.

The Mysterious Multi is a comprehensive description of the convention. Included are the several variations played principally in Europe. Basic Multi, 4441 hands, 2NT values and strong-minor values are covered, complete with responses and rebids. There are copious examples, including many from international matches, so you can see how world-class experts handle these deals. Plenty of examples in the quizzes ensure that you really understand the mechanisms. Also included are possible defenses, ranging from simple to complex.

In all, this is a great book with terrific insight into complex bidding. What a black-eye to the ACBL's not-invented-here attitude!
