Overpowered: The Dangers of Electromagnetic Radiation (EMF) and What You Can Do About It Hardcover – 31 Dec. 2016

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 99 ratings

Keys, wallet, cell phone . . . ready to go! Cell phones have become ubiquitous fixtures of twenty-first-century life—suctioned to our ears and stuck in our pockets. Yet, we’ve all heard whispers that these essential little devices give you brain cancer. Many of us are left wondering, as Maureen Dowd recently asked in the New York Times, “Are cells the new cigarettes?”

Overpowered brings readers, in accessible and fascinating prose, through the science, indicating biological effects resulting from low, non-thermal levels of non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation (levels considered safe by regulatory agencies), coming not only from cell phones, but many other devices we use in our homes and offices every day.

Dr. Blank arms us with the information we need to lobby government and industry to keep ourselves and our families safe.

Product description

A very readable and understandable, and still technically comprehensive and scientifically precise description of the state of the science on EMF. As a physicist, somewhat electro-sensitive, with a close friend who is hypersensitive, it really helped to understand the issues, risks, uncertainties and propaganda. It also confirmated my feeling that the publicity is under a similar financial-interest-cloud as climate change (which I'm heavily involved in), yet Martin Blank's descriptions are wholly technically balanced and restrained- an ability which I deeply admire. Overall this is probably the best technical and non-technical compilation I have read about any technical matter, for decades.
> Even if you have merely a passing interest in EMF, this will not only satisfy your curiosity but grip you.
> If you already have a real interest, no better place to start than here.
> Even if you think you know it all already (as my hyper-sensitive friend said), once you start reading your understanding will deepen, broaden and you'll also be able to better reduce the risk and exposure.

Very interesting read. Written by someone at the centre of scientific research on the biological effects of radiowaves and EMF in general. Eloquently picks apart telecom industry funded research and shines a light on the 1000s of research papers that warn of myriad biological effects from very low exposure.
Great starting point for further reading.
What is happening is not good, particularly WiFi in school classrooms.
Check out which countries have banned it already.

Enjoy.

This book has been a long time coming. Finally someone who lays out the peer-reviewed science for the general public to make sense of. The book gradually brings light to various aspects of the issues associated with the potential dangers of wireless technology in a clear and simple way. There's no sensationalism; just the facts. Martin Blank doesn't make bold claims but leads the reader to a place where they can make informed decisions about how to use modern technology in a responsible and safe way.

The evidence all points to being more cautious with our use of mobile wireless technology. Especially for children.

All parents of young children should read this book.

Fantastical written summary on how health concerns around EMF are ignored or confused in society. A must read for pretty much all of society if you are to really know the facts, other sources of information pale in comparison on the quality and level of research presented here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great overview, clear, easy to understand
Reviewed in the United States on 22 September 2024
While I know many people are concerned over the fossil fuels, I’ve been suspecting that a transition to electric cars & solar panels could also bring on unintended consequences.

This book was written before the scale of the electrification we see today and I can only imagine what health effects we are experiencing now as a result of it.

I am curious if Samuel has been performing tests since the 2019 rollout of 5G and the increase in electric vehicles and solar panels. I can only imagine how much worse the impact is. We are definitely seeing a lot of hair loss lately which can be related to radiation, but I would love to see experiments/ research on the present day.

Going to buy this for some friends who have concerned over recent health issues. This book was so thorough. It addressed everything I was hoping to learn!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Missing Book in my EMF Science Library
Reviewed in Canada on 31 August 2024
I regret not buying this book when it released! It is so comprehensive and enlightening and is now a valuable resource as a Quantum Nutritionist that tests homes for non-native EMFs. So many Aha's from reading all the research studies portrayed in this book. I studied it to get ready to interview the co-author R Blank on our Quantum Healthy podcast and we referred to it often throughout the interview. If you are still skeptical about non-ionizing radiation negative health effects, you really need to read this outstanding book by esteemed EMF scientist Martin Blank and his son.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lettura illuminante ed ormai, purtroppo, obbligatoria
Reviewed in Italy on 13 December 2019

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone living in today's modern world
Reviewed in the United States on 1 August 2016
This is a must read for anyone living in today's modern world. Electromagnetic Fields or EMFs are the smoking of today's age. In fact they are much worse than smoking because you can't see or smell them though a percentage of the population does have electromagnetic sensitivities and literally can feel them. EMFs come from technology and technology is cool and makes our lives easier. Smoking is disgusting to most of us so it's not a big leap to believe it's harmful. There are now more cell phones in the US than people and most people have tablets, laptops, and other devices that run on wireless networks and this massive increase in EMFs is driving much of modern day disease. The wireless industry is employing the same strategy used by big tobacco in denying EMFs are harmful. We know beyond a doubt that these EMFs are harmful, not just to human life, but all life on our planet.

The problem is most of us are exposed to these fields 24/7 and with the roll out of 4G to 5G there will be even stronger EMFs to contend with. There is a lot of misleading research by the wireless industry. The US government does not fund research and it's hard for independent researchers to get the funding they need however the evidence has been in since the 1950s and exposure has become exponentially worse since then. Occasional exposure is not an issue for most of us. It's the chronic exposure that causes disease so these studies need to be done over a period of several years to really be effective.

Dr. Martin Blank has been studying the effects of EMFs for 30+ years. His book is well written, easy to read, and is backed up by lots of published research. Do yourself a favor and read this book and then decide if EMFs and radio frequencies (RF) in particular are harmful to your health. And please be aware...they are much worse for babies and children.

There are some practical things that you can do to reduce your risk such as turning off your wifi at night, putting your cell phone in airplane mode when not in use, and avoid fluorescent lights to name a few. Whether you realize it or not you're part of a huge experiment. Humans have never been exposed to these levels of EMFs before. Don't wait for your friends or family to drop dead from cancer or a brain tumor before taking action.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'd recommend this book to anyone who sees cellphones as cigarettes ...
Reviewed in Canada on 19 October 2015
I'd recommend this book to anyone who sees cellphones as cigarettes 2.0. Martin doesn't make rash assumptions, he backs up his findings and provides enough evidence. Of course long term evidence does not exist yet, however, he presents facts and cases that go ignored by many. I found this book thought provoking and ended up sharing a few passages to my colleagues and friends.
