Great read but terrible formatting
2 out of 5 stars
Great read but terrible formatting
Both stories are very will written, ahead of their time considering when they were released.I did have an issue with the formatting of this version of 1984 though. The layout was not ideal, with randomly hyphenated words, and line placement which made the flow of the book awkward in places. Also there were no numerals, 1, 2 etc. in the whole book. I thought this was intentional at first, with the theming being that data is withheld/ vague or can be altered. Then later on I realised that no, this is just a formatting error.Overall I found the story suspensful and interesting and would rate it 4.5/5 in itself, but this version is only a 2 star for me.

The first two thirds of the book is full of interesting descriptions of a totalitarian regime, but there doesn’t seem to be any imminent danger. It’s written kind of like an essay. You feel like the danger is happening to other people when the totalitarian regime is discussed. No doubt Winston is unhappy and living only half a life, but he seems to find some level of happiness in that world. Then all of a sudden it’s over and the real danger, torture and the breaking of the mind begins. It was scary but I couldn’t put it down. I can see why this is a classic and I wish I’d read it earlier in my life. Incredibly well written. Gave me vocabulary lesson too! I know there was a film made about it and there are many cultural references out there, but I feel the time might be right for another film or tv adaptation. To quote George Orwell: “If one simply proclaims that all is for the best and doesn't point to the sinister symptoms, one is merely helping to bring totalitarianism nearer”.

This is as good as the first time I read it in my teenage years. Excellent.

Loved the book. Annoyed about spelling errors!

Orwell did his utmost to warn us about the dangers of things to come; his observations are never out of date but sharply in focus for modern times, but are we ready to learn yet! I doubt it

Two classic novels in a single book. I have read 1984 several times, but always find something new in reading it again, reading Animal Farm first brings a whole new context to it.

Following reading these two stories, I didn’t appreciate just how common it is to hear references to them on TV. 1984 was a little hard going personally but then it was written a long time ago.

Expected this to be a bit hit and miss quality wise but no it is fine. Less than a quid for two books can’t be bad.

Loved Animal Farm the first time I read it years ago, and the reread was just as good.
