The Whole Soy Story: The Dark Side of America's Favorite Health Food Hardcover – 1 Mar. 2005

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 103 ratings

Soy is not a health food, does not prevent disease and has not even been proven safe. Epidemiological, clinical and laboratory studies link soy to malnutrition, digestive problems, thyroid dysfunction, cognitive decline, reproductive disorders, even heart disease and cancer. This title tells the truth about soy that scientists know.

Product description

Review

Kaayla Daniel exposes soy for what it is, a substance that, when processed, packaged and marketed by unscrupulous companies--not to mention overconsumed by the public--becomes a harmone-disrupting drug capable of causing a host of health problems, including thyroid conditions. In The Whole Soy Story, Kaayla Daniel dismantles the marketing mythology that sells soy as a health food, replacing it with the fascinating, well-researched and fully referenced truth about soy's very real health dangers.--Mary J. Shomon, Thyroid patient advocate, author of the bestselling Living Well With Hypothyrodisim: What Your Doctor Doesn't Tell You...That You

There is a disturbing number of safety issues surrounding soy that have yet to be resolved. Dr. Kaayla Daniel begins an important dialogue.--Barbara Dossey, PhD, RN, HNC, FAAN Director, Holistic Nursing Consultants, Santa Fe, NM, Holistic Nursing Consultants, Santa Fe, NM, and author of Florence

This is the most important nutritional book of the decade. Every concerned American should read this brilliant and entertaining exposé.--William Campbell Douglass II, Author of The Milk Book and editor of Real Health Breakthroughs

Anyone in America who is interested in safe, healthy nutrition must come to terms with Dr. Kaayla T. Daniel's The Whole Soy Story. This book is a gauntlet thrown at the feet of the soy industry, whose reputation often seems based as much on self-promotion as science. Well-written, authoritative and accessible to the layperson, this is science writing at its best.--Larry Dossey, MD, Author of Healing Beyond the Body, Reinventing Medicine and Healing Words

Bravo to Kaayla for digging up the whole story on soy and telling the truth.--Debra Lynn Dadd, Author of Home Safe Home

Dr. Daniel's book contains everything you ever wanted to know about soy and much, much more and will make you wonder just why our nation, our bodies and our children are not being properly protected. Soy is just one more example of risks to the public that far outweigh the greedy benefits derived by big business and politicians. It is another serious wake-up call.--Doris J. Rapp, MD www.drrapp.com, Author of Our Toxic World, A Wake Up Call: How Chemicals Damage Our Bodies, Brains, Behavior and Sex.

The Whole Soy Story is a devastating and authoritative indictment of the safety of soy foods and a "must read" for consumers who are under the misconception that soy foods promote health. Convincingly argued and extensively supported by the medical and scientific literature, it exposes the misleading propaganda of the soy industry in promoting the supposed benefits of this inferior food.--Kilmer McCully, MD, Author of The Homocysteine Revolution and The Heart Revolution

Kaayla Daniel blows the lid off nutritional dogma. Soy is NOT a miracle food.--Dr. Joseph Mercola

I have been seeking the truth about what I eat for many years, and I have believed lots of what so called experts have said. I've eaten many so called "healthy" foods, including soy and spent a fortune doing so. My health never improved, just got worse over the years. I came across people who were doing the same as me, and some of them have website blogs that have helped me access books like the whole soy story. I thoroughly recommend this book if you think soy is good for you, you will change your mind when you read this book. Ignore people who say soy in its modern form is okay. Be informed and make the right choices. Another book I would recommend is The Untold Story of Milk. We have been so brainwashed by the food industry and others, and it's still happening!

This is a great and unique book. I am not aware of any other book that has dissected the soy(a) myth at all, let alone so comprehensively. (The UK refer to the substance as soya and the USA as soy - same horror).

Written in easy to understand language, well referenced and beautifully argued, this should be compulsory reading for anyone working in the field of diet and nutrition, all parents and especially anyone currently consuming this substance. From the history of soy being used (appropriately) for manufacturing of car parts and textiles to the difference between what Japanese people actually consume vs what Western nations produce - every thing you never knew about soy(a) is covered.

There are nice touches of humour, which is just as well because there's nothing funny about the health concerns linked to soy(a) - from cancer to the impact on fertility and the threat to reproduction. If your infant is on soy based formula then you'll understand that you've effectively got them on a birth control pill. The claims that soy(a) helps with the menopause ('natural HRT' kind of claims) are an admission of the hormone content of the substance (plant isoflavones in your cappuccino anyone?)

You will learn about the structure of the plant from which soy comes, the anti nutrients that it comes with, the toxicity and allergens and more and more. If you care about your health, or anyone around you and/or if you consume or have consumed soy(a), please read this book and then pass it on to a friend.
Many thanks - Zoe Harcombe

This book provides very well written and easy to take in information on why soy should be eaten only in the traditionally fermented forms (tempeh, natto, miso) and only in very small amounts, if at all.

The facts on soy are shocking. Not only are the many health claims made about soy extremely dubious, there are many serious concerns about its safety as a food.

Soy is hardly the health food it is promoted to be by the soy industry and in the highly processed form it is almost always eaten in, it is not very 'natural' either, and should not be considered a 'whole food.'

The idea that huge amounts of soy are eaten in asian countries, and have been for very long periods of time, and that this contributes to their good health is just a myth!

Products containing soy protein isolate, soy oil, hydrolized vegetable protein etc. should be avoided - especially by pregnant or lactating women, babies and children and women who are trying to become pregnant. (Sterol containing margarines should also be strictly avoided by this group.) Soy supplements are also to be avoided.

Giving a baby soy formula is like giving them 3-5 birth control pills a day and can have permenent effects on their reproductive health such as precocious puberty, small penis size, overdeveloped male breasts, longer more painful periods and infertility. Eating lots of soy has a drug-like or hormone-like effect.

Soy can inhibit enzymes in the body, reduce testosterone levels, reduce libido, cause a number of thyroid problems, increase cancer risk, cause cardiac arrhythmias, cause a toxic build up of manganese or aluminium and low iron levels and many other problems. Soy is also one of the top 8, 7, 6 or 4 top food allergies - depending on whose numbers you listen to.

Problems with the thyroid often occur at a dose of only 30 grams a day. 5 recent studies showed that soy is worthless in treating menopausal symptoms. 4 recent studies linked soy estrogens to infant leukemia. The goitrogens in soy which interfere with thyroid fuinction cannot be cooked out of them, as with many other goitrogenic foods. Most soy in the US is also GM. The list goes on.

This book includes some very sad case studies of the terrible effect soy has had on peoples lives, especially when soy is given to very small children and babies.

One of the worst things about the heavy promotion of soy is that this inferior food is displacing many healthier food items in our diets and on our farms. The (very well funded) soy lobby has done such a good job of demonising far healthier oils and foods such as coconut oil, eggs and butter, based on twisted science.

I'm going to find a traditionally brewed/fermented soy sauce for use in cooking occasionally and restrict my soy intake to that plus a few of my lecithin containing supplements (where I can't find a soy free alternative).

If you are a big soy eater, or eat foods which are processed and may contain hidden soy, this book is essential reading.

You may also want to read the information on soy and its dangers on the Weston A. Price website.

Thought I'd give this a go, but found it hard to believe many of the acusations given that 1.3 billion Chinese have eaten soy for hundreds of years and don't have hormonal, or other problems. In fact, their cancer rates are still far lower than ours in the West.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lot of information. Definitelyl food for thought; I changed my eating habits.
Reviewed in the United States on 13 March 2024
Deep dive into the information. I personally liked having all the information.

I saw quite a few people I know (via their eating habits), I marked pages left and right, then stopped, screeching-halt out of concern. I had purchased this book long ago. I decided about half-way through to change my eating to see what happened. YES,there was an effect. To this day, I try to choose organic when possible.
For me, I count the # of soy containing ingredients on a label, if it gets over 4 (a LOT more often then one would think!), I don't buy.
Digressing Challenge Question: how many chicken feeds, organic even, don't contain soy in the feed?
Of the 'Pastured' chickens, what are they fed come winter, if the eggs, or chickens are continused to be sold? Yes, I did contain various places and know the answer (year 2024).

If I knew there was a follow-up book, I would purchase That.

It's about time that we have both sides of soy. I have avoided it for over 30 years knowing about it's dangers. People would say I was crazy. Now that we are in the era of whistle blowers we can make our own choice. What worries me the most is good parents give their babies soy feeling that they are make a healthy choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eine Übersetzung ins Deutsche ist überfällig!
Reviewed in Germany on 10 April 2014

5.0 out of 5 stars Covers the literature on soy hormone mimics
Reviewed in the United States on 2 December 2017
Very detailed, lots of research. Estrogen mimics are a health hazard. Men are affected to ways, as too women. Women have also testosterone receptors, and men estrogen receptors on cells. They are vital hormones regulating growth, fat distribution, muscle mass, protect the brain, etc. Soy beans make a mimic of estrogen and thus testosterone--the 2 hormones differ only by one functional group. The book covers the research, which is extensive. This is a college level work which is a lead on why we are getting taller and having earlier puberty? Mimic can also muck up the vital function of these sex hormones. It is the best book on the effects of soy. Needs a recent edition.
