The Cavern: The Most Famous Club in the World Paperback – 27 April 2008
“It’s the dream of my life to be here in Liverpool and playing the Cavern because this music got me through my childhood.”—Billy Bob Thornton
“We came down from Newcastle to Liverpool in a little van in 1963 and we carried our own gear into the Cavern for a lunchtime session. We were very nervous about playing there and I said to a girl in a duffle coat who was watching us, ‘Do you think they’ll like rhythm and blues here?’ ‘Like it?’ she said, ‘We invented it.’”—Alan Price of the Animals
Liverpool’s Cavern Club is the most famous club in the world, giving rise to The Beatles and the Merseybeat explosion, but it is far more than that. Respected music writer and Merseybeat historian Spencer Leigh tells the Cavern’s fifty-year history with the help of owners, hundreds of musicians, backroom staff, and fans. From its days as a jazz club, through the Beatle years, the dramatic openings and closures, and the appearance of Paul McCartney in 1999, every page abounds with wit and insight.
Tied in with the best-selling, 120-track, 3-CD collection of the same name, featuring some of the greatest names of the British music scene, including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks, Queen, and many, many more, this book is the perfect companion to the soundtrack of fifty years of the greatest music ever made.

About the author

Spencer Leigh saw Bob Dylan at the Liverpool Odeon in 1965 and it changed his life. He couldn't believe that a concert could be so magical. The next year he saw him in Liverpool with The Band and it was even better, even though some people were stomping out in disgust. Spencer tells the remarkable stories of these concerts in Bob Dylan: Outlaw Blues. This is a comprehensive biography of Bob Dylan and Spencer has spoken to over 300 musicians for the book.
Spencer was born and still lives in Liverpool, England, and is an acknowledged authority on the Beatles. He has been broadcasting his weekly show, On The Beat, on BBC Radio Merseyside for 35 years and, over that time, has conducted more interviews about the band - all captured on tape - than anyone in the world.
Spencer has written over 30 books including biographies of Lonnie Donegan, Billy Fury, Buddy Holly, the Merseysippi Jazz Band, Elvis Presley, Simon and Garfunkel, and Frank Sinatra. He is an Honoured Friend at Sir Paul McCartney's Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA)and he has a Gold Badge of Merit from the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters.
He wrote a Kindle during the lockdown, Could This Be Magic? The Story Of Doo-Wop, a book he had wanted to complete for sometime.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 May 2013Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseOutstanding story of the Cavern from the ever reliable pen of Spencer Leigh. All the detail you could dream of as a historian and written in an entertaining way if you are just a fan of the music. Paints a vivid picture of the Mersey Sound right back to when it all started.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 November 2013Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI already have the Cavern book The Best of Cellars and I wasn't really sure about buying this one. I was pleased I did, I spent many enjoyable hours watching the Beatles at the Cavern, the snippets in this really brought back lots of memories. A great read, couldn't put it down.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 May 2011Format: PaperbackI used to go to the cavern in the 1960's. This book captures none of the magic of the cellar club that gave us the beatles. It is badly written and the photographic reproduction is of very poor quality. A few years ago I did purchase a fantastic book about this club called the best of cellars by Phil Thompson. I would recommend the Thompson book to anyone who wants to get a feel for what it was like to go to the original cabin and give the Spencee Leigh book a wide berth. It would be a waste of space on your bookshelf.
