The Meat Free Monday Cookbook Paperback – 14 July 2016

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 296 ratings

In 2009, Paul, Stella and Mary McCartney launched the Meat Free Monday campaign as a simple and straightforward idea to show everyone the value of eating less meat - and to make it easier for us all to do so. The Meat Free Monday Cookbook is for everyone who shares the campaign's aims and consists of menus for each of the 52 weeks of the year - two main dishes, plus four other ideas for each meal of the day. Packed with recipes such as Spiced Pumpkin Pancakes, Roasted Halloumi Wrap, Pilau Rice with Cashews and Watermelon Granita, as well as vibrant spring soups, inventive summer salads, appetising autumn bakes and comforting winter stews, it includes contributions from Paul and Stella McCartney as well as from celebrity and chef supporters of the campaign such as Skye Gyngell, Giorgio Locatelli, Theo Randall, Yotam Ottolenghi, Bryn Williams, Twiggy and Vivienne Westwood.

Product description

Review

'The vast majority of people are conscientious and would want to do something in their own lives to help secure a happier future for the generations that follow. Whilst many suggestions offered can be quite difficult to put into practice, the idea of one meat-free day per week is something that many people find do-able and something that, with the help of this book, can be achieved relatively easily.' from the foreword by Paul, Stella and Mary McCartney

'For those meat eaters who can't think how to cook without it, this will help and inspire.' The Independent

'Here the newlywed Beatle opens his private cookbook to share some surprisingly exotic dishes.' --The Times

'Go meat-free with the McCartneys' Vegetarian Living

'One of the most sensible campaigns of the past few years was Meat Free Monday. Launched by the McCartney family, it asked us to consider one day per week without meat.
The Meat Free Monday Cookbook is equally appetising, filled as it is with wonderful recipes.' --Tom Parker Bowles

'offers tantalising veggie menus for every week of the year' --Sarah Stacey, You Magazine

My wife is a vegetarian, I am not. I wanted to find more meals that we could eat together (Im a very fussy eater) and Meat Free Mondays seemed like a good way to 'force' my self to eat less meat.
The book is devoded into 4 seasons so many of the recipes take advantage of seasonal veg. All the recipies include a short description, ingredient list and easy to follow method. We have followed the dinner recipe every week for a few months now and have yet to be disappointed, many of the meals we will definitely make again.

Im still no vegetarian but I am eating a much healthier diet and Im much less reliant on meat too.

Great ideas for meat free meals. There are loads of recipes for the whole day, breakfast, lunch and dinner. The ingredients are listed within the recipe, which could be a drawback for some, but it does make you read through the whole recipe before starting to cook, which is usually a good thing! I can see me using the recipes a lot, not just on Mondays! I like this book a lot.

The gimmick behind this book is to put a picture of Paul, Stella, and Mary McCartney on the back cover and claim them to be the authors of this book. They are not. They may have introduced the concept of meat-free Mondays, and they have contributed a forward and a few recipes to the book, but that is it. The rest are just a compilation of various recipes, with a few celebrity ones thrown in. If you are buying it because of them, then don't.

The book is filled with beautiful photos, but most are just vegetables. What a waste! I want to see what the food looks like. Although I will admit that the few food pictures do look appetizing and make you want to try them.

The book itself is a great idea-to provide breakfast, lunch (even packed lunches!), a side or snack, supper and dessert for every Monday of the year. It makes planning menus really simple and the days are divided by seasons so you never have to worry you won't find something in the grocery. That said, however, I had a very hard time finding anything in this cookbook I or my family would actually eat. I have a large family with seven kids and was hoping to find some non-meat meals to cut food costs at home, but very few of these recipes seem kid-friendly. Some are mundane and don't need recipes, like avocado on toast, but most are just too exotic. What, for example, is mafalda corta? And pappardelle with cavolo nero really had me baffled. Of course, in today's day and age you can easily look these things up, but personally I want a cookbook with ingredients that are easily accessible and won't break the bank. Just too many of these recipes were with foods that my kids wouldn't touch. Adults who are more adventurous eaters might enjoy it though.

The desserts look doable and worth trying and there is an occasional stir-fry or pasta dish that might work, but given that I have five growing boys at home, a lot of these recipes don't seem filling for supper. A salad won't be enough for them. Again, this book is not a complete waste and may inspire those die-hard vegetarian couples, but I think most average people will just find this book too strange. I'd really only recommend with some hesitation and only if you have a lot of patience to go searching for the ingredients.
