That's what I thought it was, and I can confirm this is actually a novel. I was slowly starting to get into the IDW comics at the time and thought I'd check out this, which I for some reason thought was a Dreamwaves comic! Didn't have my brain switched on that day it seems!
After I got over the initial disappointment of the realisation of the format, I decided to get stuck into it anyway, and whilst I was rather sceptical as how a franchise more known for its films, comics and toys would adjust to this medium, given the visual appeal of its other incarnations, this is actually really good!
It's well written, and the complex world of Cybertron is well described and easily imagined. The dialogue is also very strong, and the story is very political and aimed at teen to older readers. Although it is not related to the IDW continuity, it is the closest relative to that franchise's darker, political, more cerebral take on the Transformers' world, and totally different to the dumbed-down Michael Bay films.
It chronicles lower caste dwelling Orion Pax's rise from everyday data clerk and his rise to becoming Optimus Prime via a supposed peaceful revolution with a certain Megatronus. Without spoiling the plot for you, let's just say it makes you consider who is right and wrong and introduces a new dimension to a lot of well known and loved characters.
Curiously, this book is referred to as 'The Official History of the War for Cybertron.' Official to which continuity is the big question. It's definitely not related to the IDW or Marvel comics, as Orion Pax has a totally different back story in that continuity. My guess (as its advertised on one of the back pages) is that is meant as a prologue for the War For Cybertron video games, and its older, G1 audience, but even then I'm only guessing!
However, this book is an enjoyable read, giving lots of insight into the pre-series background for Transformers: Prime and the Aligned Continuity in general.
While it's a shame we never got more content overall for this continuity before it was discontinued, it's still nice that we got Exodus and the other novels as a bit of off-screen storytelling to provide more context for what happened before the bots landed on Earth.
I find the pre-war set up to be my favourite elements of the book, as it gives us a bit of a slice-of-life look at Orion Pax's day to day life, as well as doing some decent (albeit patchy in some places) world building.
Overall, I recommend this book to any TFP fans out there.
Obviously as is the usual issue with the Transformers series, is the continuity; there are some moments in the book that it contradicts its own lore and facts, though whether it is down to the more basic description of things or is a result of the authors error is down to reader speculation.
I enjoyed reading this book so much that my original copy is now broken in half; I've had the book for over a year and the spine split very easily, so now I will have to purchase another...which I gladly would do!
I hope to find more about the First Primes, that would also be a story worth telling
Despite some plotholes and continuity errors, it's a really good book, that i recommend.
One of the thing I have notice right away is that the book pages is somewhat less compared to the other game related books I have read like Guild Wars 2 so I do feel like having more pages would had benefit it.
The decription was also lacking in the book aswell mainly there were little characteristics of the characters and despite describing the places, it could of been more detail. I guessing the reason is that the book was more aim at the fan or we all have different imagine of the characters but even then some description would of still been beneficial. Yes we all know Optimus is red and blue and Megatron is white/ silver but come on!
Also it could of help more if they had at least made a small illustration of the location map on Cybertron but I guess they didn't thought that out properly (it would of been interesting to see where Iacon is and how far away it is from the Badland).
Sure I knew full well I was reading a competely different Transformers then what I used to know but I still find it odd with some characters personality.
While it does sound like I am complaining more than praising it but I still find the book a good read if you want to read a new origin of the franchise.

Deepening out the ideals and views of both characters who live in an oppressive caste-based society it really shows why Megatron became so twisted and evil.
It keeps the by now popular and frequently reused ideas of Megatron being a labourer forced to work in atrocious circumstances, turned champion Pit Fighter, gladiator without peer he eventually becomes a charismatic revolutionary. He befriends the scholar/administrator/archivist Orion Pax and the two influence each other's views.
Eventually things escalate.
Megatron set on a path of vengeance, brutal meritocracy and driven by hatred.
Optimus Prime hoping to build on the righteous foundation Megatron said up to build a better society.
Megatron from hero to villain.
Optimus from nobody to hero.
Well worth the read!
On a sidenote I loved the appearance and a bit of depth added to supporting cast like Soundwave, Shockwave, Jazz or Orion Pax.
I only wished it wouldn't have had so many dents and scratches already but I don't mind it too much, while and after reading it won't look prestine either.

I love the Transformers. (But please do not think that just because I like them, that I will write "Oh, la dee da, it's perfect because it's Optimus!" . . . Uh, no. In fact, I didn't really like Age Of Extinction that much, but that is another matter.)
And as a fan, I have always wondered about the mysterious past of Optimus Prime and Megatron, and what really happened. I will not give any spoilers, but I will say that this book delivered everything I could have ever hoped for!
The way Alex wrote it, it kind of puts you in the mind of a History book (not the boring History books, but the awesome ones). The characters are extremely well thought-out, and he captured their thoughts and personalities perfectly! You can read their thoughts, their feelings, what their ideas are for Cybertron, and everything in between.
The story mainly focuses on the young Data Clerk, Orion Pax, and the gladiator Megatronus. The story is amazing! Every detail you have ever wondered about Cybertron and its history can be found right in this book! The cities and descriptions of the surroundings are so vibrant and detailed, you actually feel like you're there with them. And it is so amazing to watch how Orion Pax grows up and changes and matures into Optimus Prime, and how Megatronus was born without a name, and becomes Megatron.
Please ignore every bad review you have ever read! It is definitely worth it!
