Top 5 Reasons to Calibrate Your Display
- Monitors display colours differently
- People see colours differently
- Prints don’t match your monitor
- Image colours are not true to life
- Save time and money
Why Calibrate Your Monitor
Most monitors come out of the box with the brightness set too high and with oversaturated colours – plus they degrade over time. Another very important factor to ensure proper image editing and print matching, is having the correct room lighting conditions. Your display is the window into your digital image, you need to be able to trust it. Spyder5 calibrates your display to your environment and to an industry colour reference standard to ensure your colours are accurate for better print matching. Your image editing will be easier and faster, you’ll spend less time in the “print-edit-print” cycle, and you’ll waste less ink and paper.
Room Light Monitoring
Spyder5ELITE has an integrated room light sensor that continually measures your unique lighting conditions and alerts you if there's been a change among five ambient light levels. You can then choose to either modify your calibration settings or adjust your room lighting, to assure optimal colour accuracy, both on screen and in print.
True Colour in a Flash
Spyder5ELITE creates a unique colour profile for each of your monitors and adjusts their brightness level based on your room lighting. Say goodbye to time wasted on manually correcting your monitor’s preset settings without success. Now you can see the true colours of your photographs, both on screen and in print. Skin tones will be accurate and the blue sky you shot is going to look blue – not cyan.
Next generation Spyder technology comes with a colorimeter that's compact, portable and protected. It includes a dual purpose lens cap and counterweight, and guarantees improved tonal response with the industry's only patented 7-detector optical engine resulting in more accurate shadow detail and smoother gradients.
Easy to Use
Spyder5ELITE’s calibration process is fast and easy. A step-by-step wizard and additional advanced options guide you through the calibration process, then through evaluating your image. Evaluate your monitor’s colour accuracy monthly using CheckCAL and then if needed, run ReCAL to recalibrate in minutes. In terms of calibration tools, it doesn’t get any easier.
Personalized “Before and After” with SpyderProof
See the nuances that matter most with a “Before and After” evaluation of your calibration results in full screen mode using your own photograph, or with a professional Datacolor composite image. The choice is yours. Designed for the way photographers work, SpyderProof gives you confidence that your displays achieve precise colour accuracy.
Advanced Control for Matching Multiple Displays
SpyderMatch and SpyderTune are two advanced features that allow you to fine-tune all of your connected monitors by matching Brightness, White Point, and Gamma. These controls give you the ultimate flexibility to make each of your connected monitors look identical. No matter how many monitors you edit your images on, you can be confident that you have the ultimate in colour accuracy and your images look the same on all of your connected monitors.
With features like fine-tune grey calibration and unlimited choices for gamma, white point, and luminance, Spyder5ELITE gives you the ultimate control in colour calibration resulting in a perfectly calibrated monitor. Whether you use the simple step-by-step wizard or the Expert Console, you can be confident that you are using the best tool available to ensure the colours you see on screen are accurate and your prints match.
Spyder5ELITE includes a powerful module that lets you fully characterize your monitor, and track its performance over time with reporting. The software allows you to compare gamuts between displays and standard colour spaces, analyse and graph luminance and colour uniformity, map tone response curves, and measure and graph display accuracy against SpyderCHECKR colour targets. These tools give you an easy way to monitor and compare the overall health and performance of your laptop and desktop monitors over time.

The difference between the before/after images sometimes has you questioning as to whether the changes made are beneficial, with one being a cooler image, and the other being a warmer image. But this is because your eyes will only spot the difference between the colours, and I have absolute faith in the colorimeter after seeing a print come out almost identical to the one on the screen, whereas before I would find images would come out too warm, too dark, or too lacking in contrast or saturation.
Being able to synchronize different monitors has been a really big positive point of this tool as well, meaning something I produce on my laptop will look almost identical when I drop it on my PC. As for users who have dual, or triple-monitor setups, this will be found useful for getting the colours and brightness to match exactly. The only exception I have found so far is in situations where the monitors use different technologies (i.e. IPS vs LCD), but even then the Spyder5 Elite will take you as close to matching as physically possible.
If you're serious about colourwork, or need different monitors to match up, then this is absolutely a necessary piece of equipment you should have sitting on your desk.
There is no manual in the box and I think that's by design, The website address to download the software is written on the side of the box in case you're looking for it.
Overall I'm very impressed with the product and pleased by my purchase. I you are a professional I'd imagine you'd want to buy a one of the next models up in the range as they offer the ability to monitor and change the calibration in real time based on the changes to ambient light in the room. However for hobbyists and non professionals this is a great device and provides splendid accurate colour management at a reasonable price.
This is much more compact than the old Spyder which is good but because it is so light now I did have some difficulty getting it to rest on the screen correctly.
I finally coughed up the money for this Spyder5 unit. Imagine my dismay when the problem still persists.
The Datacolor software is a little limited - and what makes the difference between the different product levels. There are plenty of very good and more detailed colour-calibration applications out there. For instance, dispcalGUI which uses Argyll CMS - this gives you a more detailed readout of the sensor information and it is this that really highlighted the problem.
To get each monitor reading 6500°K according to the sensor, the colour cast becomes even more apparent. The sensor is claiming that two completely different shades of white are the same. At which point, all other readings kind of become pointless.
In the end I just slogged it out myself and did things by hand, I still have a slight difference between the screens, but they are far better than the results from this calibrator device. Otherwise, the calibrator lifted the shadows a bit in my ICC profile, but generally my non-premium monitors weren't changed noticeably. And the sensor is reporting 99.9% sRGB for both.
If you have a single screen, you can probably convince yourself you're getting an accurate result, but it seems that this whole calibration lark is a bit of a farce.
