This is a fantastic model. Over 1300 pieces go into the van which, once complete, is about a foot long and is pleasingly solid. I've built lots of Lego models over the years which have felt a bit fragile and flimsy, but this is quite heavy when finished and actually quite sturdy (obviously you wouldn't throw it around the room though...)
The detail is just wonderful. The van has four opening doors, plus the front two windows open, as does the rear window and the engine cover. The engine is visible but sadly is just there for show, so don't expect its components to move (this isn't Technic). On the top the "pop" roof section lifts up and is stronger than its looks, the orange side made of a woven material which neatly concertinas when the roof is dropped. The roof is held on in four places and lifts off to allow you to see inside. The interior is amazing. The floor is tiled in a black & white check design, the windows have curtains, a picture hangs on one wall and a T-shirt with "Make Lego Models Not War" emblazoned on the front hangs in a window. There is a cabinet with a mirrored door, a lava lamp a cactus, a glass of wine on the folding table, a pan & a brush hanging over the wash basin, and the rear seat folds down to make a bed.
I built the model over three evenings and since then it has sat on our mantelpiece where everyone who has seen it has raved about how great it looks, from teenagers to an 80 year-old. It is quite a fiddly build in places and so I wouldn't recommend it for young children, but for big kids like me it is brilliant.
Is it worth the price? Shop around and you will find it for less than this (I paid £80) but I don't begrudge what I spent on it at all. It's a fantastic model, and the best Lego kit I've ever seen.
It is easily one of the best toy experiences I've ever had, and totally worth the money. Lego has come on in leaps and bounds in the last decade, and it really shows in this model. The pieces are so well chosen and the set is so well designed; you'll be amazed at how the bricks can cover up a whole coffee table, yet they manage to cram them all into a model 30cm in length. There are so many bricks for the money you pay, and although many of them are small, this means even a seasoned Lego pro will be hard challenged to finish putting together all 1330 bricks in under 6 hours. There are a few fiddly bits that might take a few goes to fit together if you're not an aforementioned Lego pro, and sometimes you'll have to look a bit hard to see what new pieces certain pages of the instruction manual have just told you to put on, but it's still pretty straightforward.
The finished model is nothing short of gorgeous. Again, Lego models have come so far in 10 years, and this is one of the best ever made. So many details, features and styling elements really make the final model pop, and the interior details are absolutely stunning, I can't stop admiring them days after finishing it. I keep it on my desk in my room at university, and loads of my mates can't help but admire it, even sporty jocks who've never touched a Lego brick in their lives!
The only bad point I can think of on the model is that whilst the rear of the model is almost perfectly shaped, the hinged doors at the front mean the curved elements on the back haven't been used, and it looks slightly blocky and jagged.
This is nitpicking though, the designed who made this model is clearly one of the best in the world, and it would be VERY difficult to have included both the hinged doors and perfect curved styling.
All in all, this is an amazing piece of toy engineering, almost a work of art, and the construction of said work is an absolute pleasure, and would be for anyone from a young teenager to an old uncle, whether they have little Lego bricks flowing through their veins, or have never touched a brick in their life. Fantastic fun, guaranteed hours of enjoyment, or if it's not for you, you'll certainly be the new favourite relative at little Timmy's birthday! Lego have really outdone themselves here.
However, the model as built is left hand drive. Being as I live In England, I thought, could it be built as right hand drive. The answer is yes. It was a case of mirror imaging the instructions during the build and putting the side doors on the left hand side. Much of the model is symmetrical, ie, the roof, rear doors and front.
Apart from this, a very enjoyable model to build and took about a week on and off.
The interior detail is superb and the outside retains the character of the original. A very nice model.
