4.0 out of 5 stars confusing package ... great music 14 April 2013
By Donald E. Gilliland - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Well, this is a confusing package; one of two reissues, both of them 2-CD sets with 28 tracks on them, titled "The Very Best of Ethiopiques." Amazon has this one listed as "Cult Hits from the Original Series," but that's actually the subtitle of this package. Perhaps they did that to distinguish this one from the other compilation (which has a different cover and different order of tracks).

In any case, the music on here is fantastic; that hypnotic stew of jazz and soul and Ethiopian "world music" that is so unique. If you are familiar with any of the albums in the multi-volume "Ethiopqiues" series (including a great compliation by the legendary Mulatu Astatqe) you know how fascinating --- and addictive --- this music can be.

As good as the music is on this collection, there are a few annoying aspects with the package. There are no track times given for any of the songs, nor are we told the year the songs were recorded. Apart from the song listings, there is a separate listing of "Artist Notes" in the booklet that give a short bio of each artist, plus a brief history and overview of the Ethiopian music scene during the time these tracks were recorded, presumably in the 1960s and 1970s. I also think they could have given us more songs; there is barely 55 minutes of music on each disc. Not bad, but hardly filled to the brim.

If you haven't bought any of the CDs in the "Ethiopqiues"series yet (there are 27 volumes in all!), I would recommend getting this compilation because it offers a good overview of the talented artists who comprised this interesting musical scene.
