Twelve years ago I bought the Solar Myth Approach volume two and hated it. Giving it a second try I really turned on to Scene one take one (track three)which is a spacey trancey moog piece. Now with the purchase of volume one i've got fourty two Sun Ra albums and this pair are definitely my favourit's (with nothing is and live at montreaux). The albums consist of small sparse arrangements usually Ra and another player, The tunes that each play are open and simple and compliment each other well giving a depth that may be lost in the ensemble pieces. There is a variety of styles on the albums possibly as they are drawn from sessions spanning the period 1967 to 1970, and in-between the band recorded some very fine albums (Atlantis, Pictures of Infinity)These are very much studio albums in mood and although the sound quality isn't great the playing is good and the set is very fine although there are two songs and I'm never keen on either songs or chants. The term box set may suggest special packaging when in fact these come in a very cheap double CD box with a low resolution photo on the front, the artwork is however attractive and the liner notes are informative. If the late sixties period Ra is for you I would recommend this CD. While some albums cover similar ground as for example Blue Delight is similar to Purple night (I dislike both) and the excellent Sun Song is similar to Sound of Joy. This album stands out and should probably be in every good Ra collection.

2.0 out of 5 stars I actually really enjoy this recording 23 Aug. 2016

I actually really enjoy this recording. I am a big Sun Ra fan. Yes, this is a fairly out there one for Sun Ra (which means that it is way, way out there compared to most jazz or music in general). It is still quite good if you like this kind of thing. The reason for the low review is that the album is advertised as Volumes 1 & 2 when in reality it is only Volume 1. This is obvious when you look at the track listing of only seven songs but misleading if only paying attention to the title. Volume 2 is also available digitally on Amazon but not as part of this album like it is implied. It is a good album of early 70's semi electric space jazz but just pay attention to what you are buying.
5.0 out of 5 stars Moog For The Mood 22 Sept. 2008

The vision of Sun Ra is placed within an experimental framework, as ambient music is shaped through the use of a Mini-Moog synthesizer in the pair of releases that were recorded in 1970-1971.

The Solar-Myth Arkestra capture the special textures through the oboe, flute and drums of James Jacson. The landscape has a wonderful symmetry of colors and Sun Ra brings a sonic harmony to some of his most challenging works within his vast discography.

great mix of tunes and styles, and great sound quality for Sun Ra recordings, too. worth the price for Adventures of Bugs Hunter and Pyramids alone.

I used to have this as two separate vinyl LPs. It's excellent, and you know what? I ALREADY REVIEWED IT.
