Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
A very supportive drummer the sadly short lived Osie Johnson was sufficiently versatile to fit comfortably into swing, bop and blues settings and was to grace innumerable small group recordings as an accomplished sideman in the 1950s. Johnson was to front a number of recordings but only the two LPs Osie's Oasis and Johnson's Whacks, both originally released by Period in 1955 are presently available in CD form. Potential customers should avoid " Osie's Oasis Remastered" for this CD contains only the six tunes that appeared on the original LP of that name whereas " Osie's Oasis" (under review) contains all the twelve tunes originally issued on the two LPs

Johnson's talents, evident on the CD, include not only his drumming but also his achievements as both composer and arranger. He also contributes a rather insipid vocal to the unfortunately named "Don't bug me, hug me" the least pleasing of the entire set. Johnson was fortunate to enjoy the services of talented musicians many known for their association with Count Basie. The offerings are something of a mixed bag comprising a pianoless octet (Thad Jones, Chiefy Salaam (tpts), Henry Coker (tmb), Ernie Wilkins (alto),Frank Wess (tnr & flute), Charlie Fowlkes (bar) and Wendell Marshall (bass)); a septet (Jones, Wess and Coker plus Bill Hughes (tmb), Dick Katz (pno) and Milt Hinton (bass)) and a quintet (Wess and Katz plus Benny Powell (tmb) and Eddie Jones (bass)).

With the one possible exception the tunes are lively and well arranged creations with ample opportunities for solo offerings by the various horns. To his credit Johnson does not indulge in any firework displays and his very occasional drum breaks are always tastefully executed.

An enjoyable CD that deserves to be better known.
