4.0 out of 5 stars this comes highly recommended. I just did a listening session 5 Dec. 2015
By sPARKs - Published on Amazon.com

If you are looking for a Fred Hersch recording to start with or add to your collection, this comes highly recommended. I just did a listening session, going through a bunch of his recordings and this one jumped out at me. He is much better at the slower pieces, which lend themselves to his special touch, and this has a bunch of them. It ends with as good a version of Body and Soul that I know. And to be honest, that is usually one of those staples of the repertoire which does not rouse me. That I move past. Not here. Fantastic.

Overall the CD is quite good. Only a few of the numbers were really excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best disc in the series 7 Feb. 2013
By John J Shaddy - Published on Amazon.com
I have all of 43 volumes of the Maybeck Recital Series. I also have upwards of 60 to 70 CDs of Fred Hersch performing as leader, co-leader, or side-man. Fred's Maybeck recital is one of the most extraordinary jazz piano recitals on record, and in my view, the best in the series. There are several aspects of his music making where, perhaps, he has no peer in his or any generation of pianists. I know of no pianist with Fred's ability to improvise a rich, 4-part contrapuntal texture in any situation he chooses. His expansiveness with regards to rhythm and metric-modulation is remarkable. His ballad playing on this disc is so deeply personal, is so beautiful, that he practically creates definitive versions of these tunes.

There is a reason why Fred Hersch is the only pianist in the history of NYC's Village Vanguard to be invited to play a week of solo recitals there.

I highly recommend this disc and all discs featuring this remarkable musician.

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece--one of the very best of the Maybeck series 25 Mar. 2002
By Jazz Pianist - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is my favorite Fred Hersch CD, and I have many. This is an exquisitely paced and realized program, flawlessly played. "Embraceable You" distills itself from the ether, gradually taking form, and dances crystalline and joyous. Fred gets way, WAY inside, remarkably deep into the ballads "You Don't Know What Love Is" , "Haunted Heart" and "If I Loved You" and plays these jewels with incredible feeling. Amazing, amazing renditions. Swing numbers like "In Walked Bud" round out this stunning recital. Heartily, highly, enthusiastically recommended by an appreciative fellow jazz pianist.
