Product description

Product Description

Ross Birchard has made the leap from beatmaker to genuine super-producer far more spectacularly than most. Drake, Lil Wayne, Bjork, Antony & The Johnsons, R. Kelly, Big Sean, Pusha T, Pharrell, Mark Ronson, Miguel, John Legend, Future, Rick Ross - the list of credits spirals into the upper echelons of adventurous hip pop titans. Hudson Mohawke had been knighted a fully paid-up producer to the stars and then he did what other pop producers fail to do - he went and had a few hits of his own, starting in the summer of 2012 when he and Lunice teamed up for an unassuming drop under the name TNGHT (Warp x LuckyMe), continuing most recently with last year's Chimes EP when Apple chose the track for their new global campaign literally wearing a Hudson Mohawke sticker proudly on their product.

Now he is back with his first solo album in over five years and it's everything you've wanted and very little of what you've expected. 'Lantern' is a fusion album of soaring orchestration and widescreen club dynamics. It looks unwaveringly towards the future while embracing an evolving, timeless canon of pop and soul music; tracks feature Antony Hegarty, Miguel, Jhene Aiko, Irfane, Ruckazoid, and Devaeux. Says HudMo, " This album is everything I've been working towards. I wanted to make a classic - at least for me and my friends. I never wanted to be any genre. I wanted to be my own thing. Everything."

Much more mature record, more accessible for the mainstream. Good production which is what he's all about. More "songs" on here than previous records. Varied record, some great soundtrack tunes.

A good album, fantastically produced to Hudson Mohawke's high standards will make a great summer soundtrack. Stand out tracks for me were 'Scud Books' and 'Shadows.'
Personally most of the vocal tracks I struggled with, the exceptions being 'Lantern' and "Deepspace' (And they were growers!). I found 'Indian Steps' and "Resistance' the production gave way to the melancholy lyrics which became a little boring and the vocals in 'Warriors' just came over a bit cheesy. Still would highly recommend this album to anyone interested.

The timing of this album was unfortunate, coming out so soon after the infinitely superior album by Jamie xx, and I wasn't impressed when I first listened to it. It did improve with future listens though, and although many of the tracks seemed pretty dull there are decent tracks like Scud Books, Brand New World, and Very First Breath.

However the best track of all seemed like it was going to be Indian Steps, for over 3 minutes its a great song that left me hoping for a creative partnership akin to what Jon Hopkins/King Creosote did on Diamond Mine. However with a minute to go the track switches to some un-listenable white noise. I get the point he is trying to make but its ham fisted and leaves the track un-listenable.

Anyway its not a terrible album, but it just feels like it could have been much better.

"Lantern" is Scottish electronic act Hudson Mohawke's sophomore album. He's one half of the duo TNGHT and has also worked with Drake and Kanye West.

His album is an eclectic mix with guests from different genres yet still giving a cohesive sound. The general sound is wispy and light on bass. The hip hop-laced "Very First Breath" features Irfane, while "Ryderz" incorporates sped up soul samples sounding vintage, much like early Kanye West.

The mellow soulful "Warriors" features Ruckazoid and Devauex and an uplifting choir chorus. The moody "Indian Steps" features Antony Hegarty's mournful croon. Miguel features on the ghostly apparition that is "Deepspace" singing lines like "All my anger spilling over pavement, please don't go" against faintly wailing guitars, while Jhené Aiko appears on the floaty soul "Resistance" with soft skittery beats.

Everything else is instrumental, highlights being the tinkling and cinematic "Kettles", the tinkling Oriental-tinged "Lil Djembe", "System" which starts off widescreen before pounding beats take over, and the constantly morphing "Brand New World".

This fittingly titled Lantern leaves an incandescent glow on the dancefloor.
