3.0 out of 5 stars Decent score for forgettable bio pic 28 Oct. 2016

Based on a retrospective making-of book by Joseph Rubello, HITCHCOCK was a 2012 awards-bait film which depicted the making of Alfred Hitchcock's classic PSYCHO, with Anthony Hopkins playing the Master of Suspense and Helen Mirren as his wife, Alma. It was an interesting assignment for Danny Elfman, who was having a busy year. This wasn't the first time he had crossed paths with the historic film, as he had previously adapted Bernard Herrmann's score (with orchestrator Steve Bartek) for Gus Van Sant's 1998 remake. Interestingly for this assignment, while he channels Herrmann (as is usually their case with him), it isn't as strong as it usually is with him and he doesn't outright quote any of the material, which makes this fit well into his own style, almost to a fault.

"Logos" appropriately sets the tone for the score, which is largely string-based but has small uses of percussive elements and bells, and plays to the film's strange tone of lightheartedness and morbid humor. "Theme from 'Hitchcock'" introduces a tiny string-based motif and is an interesting blend of Elfman's style with Herrmann's. It's not a strong theme, but he uses it enough throughout a few times in the score to make it effective. The rest of the score is in these two styles and many of the tracks are brief. "Premiere" is very much an Elfman track and sounds like it could have come from a Tim Burton movie. "Finally" and "Home At Last" are great reprises of the main motif. The two "End Credit" tracks utilize this material well enough and it ends with a decent version of the famous tune associated with the director.

It's a decent Elfman score that runs by smoothly on a short album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hitch Unhitched 14 Jan. 2013

I love the work of Danny Elfman and try to get any soundtrack in which he is involved - even if I don't have the opportunity to see the movie. Again, he did not disappoint.
4.0 out of 5 stars Clever cues from Elfman 4 Jun. 2013

Most people buy Elfman's scores for his soaring soundscapes and fantastic melodies. This soundtrack is not quite as epic as those others. Rather, Elfman creates a series of short but clever cues that accentuate the mood of the film. They are at times playful and jovial, melancholy and emotional, much like Anthony Hopkins' characterization of Alfred Hitchcock. The film is fun in itself, but Elfman's lively indidentals enhance this sense of fun.

I wouldn't recommend this score to everyone, but Elfman completists and fans of the film will enjoy it.

3.0 out of 5 stars ok...does it's job for the movie...don't know if I'll listen to it too much. 16 Dec. 2012

I'm a big Danny Elfman fan. I love Edward Scissorhands, Nightbreed, etc. There are a few of his scores that are a bit lacking with memorable melodies and this one falls in that category. It is a really short CD too...only 38 minutes of music. I'm sure the scores works perfectly for the film...but it isn't something you are going to be playing over and over again...unless you like the Hitchcock theme. I just wonder why this is so short?
