Product description

Product Description

When "Death Discs" controversially began to make their mark on mainstream pop music in the late '50s, they were initially viewed as being in bad taste and many suffered airplay bans. Nonetheless, despite the lack of radio play, sides like: "Moody River", "Teen Angel", "Tell Laura I Love Her", "Ebony Eyes", "Big Bad John", "El Paso" etc. were massive sellers. Conversely releases like: "Susie Forgive Me", "The Ballad of Billy Brown", "A Thousand Feet Below", "Jimmy Love", "The Rumour", "Girl on Death Row" failed to register but have become much sought-after collectors' items. This 56 track 2CD set has been lovingly and carefully compiled. The juxtaposition of the genres popular hits alongside the collectors' rarities, and the fact that many of the latter are not available elsewhere on CD, simply makes this a compilation to die for.

A few extremely obvious choices. Some rarely heard. With sadly a few exceptions that should have been included. It is clear too that the person who wrote the sleeve notes. May have done a deal. of research. But did not buy these records. Or have an interest in them at the time. Otherwise Dickey Lee's 'Strange Things Happen in This World' and Johnny Cymbel's 'Teenage Heaven' could not have been missed. Nit picking perhaps because this is still terrific value.
If you don't let good taste mar your enjoyment. You should dig this record the most. 'The Ballard Of Billy Joe' is by the way an answer record. To Johnny Cash's 'Don't Take Your Guns To Town'. .

5.0 out of 5 stars Great collection of goofy, gloomy rock'n'pop death song oldies 26 Oct. 2013

"GROOVING WITH THE GRIM REAPER"
(Jasmine, 2013)
. . . .

Just in time for Halloween comes this spooky 2-CD set of country, pop and rock'n'roll oldies from 1954-62, an era known for its exuberantly shameless novelty songs. This mixes murder ballads, morbid teen tragedy songs and even a few pop culture memorials, like Mike Berry's "Tribute To Buddy Holly." From the country side of the tracks come tracks by Ferlin Husky ("The Drunken Driver"), Rex Allen, a couple by Marty Robbins ("Big Iron" and "El Paso") and an excellent melodramatic weeper from the Stanley Brothers ("No School Bus In Heaven"). The pop and rockabilly folks had a real field day with the tragedy song genre, and this is packed with gems such as Lee Hazelwood's "Girl On Death Row," "Car Crash" by the Cadets, Billy Fury's "Don't Jump" and "I'm Gonna Kill Myself" by Buddy Knox. And of course the collection closes with the hit that put the last nail on the coffin of the fad, Bob Luman's forcefully cheerful "Let's Think About Living," which is a fine antidote to all the glorious gloom and doom that precedes it. This is a fun collection, and a great slice of pre-Beatles pop culture... So good, it's scary! (DJ Joe Sixpack, Slipcue Guide To Country Music)
4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Collection!! 13 Sept. 2014
By Ausman - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
A very comprehensive collection of Grim Reaper classics, which includes Wayne Cochran's original (first recording) version of "Last Kiss" which came out on Gala in 1961........ Sounds very clean. Amazon's track line-up here mistakenly lists the artist as EDDIE Cochran although the tray card listing on the actual CD is correct!
