Evo15 Solar Pir Utility Light
The Evo15 Solar PIR Utility Light is a real game-changer for the budget end of the solar security light and solar shed light market. Look no further if you’re looking for a compact solar sensor light for under £20 that is easy to install and exceeds expectation.
How does it work?
During the day the Evo15's solar panel charges its internal battery giving it the power it needs to light after dark. After dark the Evo15 will activate as soon as it detects motion and turns off 25 seconds after motion stops. At dawn the Evo15 stops activating and starts charging again ready for the night ahead.
Using the Evo15 as a solar security light
Simply position your Evo15 outside and locate the solar panel in an unobstructed location. The Evo15 will light up after dark as soon as it detects motion and turn off 25 seconds after motion stops.
Using the Evo15 as a solar shed light
Install your Evo15 inside your shed and position the solar panel outside in an unobstructed location (usually on top of your shed). When you enter your shed the Evo15 will light up automatically and turn off automatically 25 seconds after you leave.
How waterproof is the Evo15 Solar PIR Utility Light?
The Evo15 is rated IP44 and is designed for outdoor use in locations that offer some cover and aren’t overly exposed. Unlike cheaper imitations of this light, the Evo15 incorporates key upgrades which enhance waterproofing. These include a rubber collar, a rubber shield behind the back plate and a redesigned solar panel jack which creates a waterproof connection when plugged into the light.
How do I install it?
The Evo15 Solar PIR Utility Light is very easy to install in comparison with mains powered security lights. The box contains the light unit a solar panel connected to 4.8m of cable. Before beginning your installation is worth making sure that there is a suitable solar panel location within 4.8m of where you intend to situate your light.
- Position the solar panel and mark the holes
- Drill holes, and screw panel into place
- Position light within 4.8m of panel and mark holes
- Drill holes and screw mounting band into place
- Clip light into mounting band
- Connect solar panel cable to light and turn on

Arrived, but was disappointed to find that the mounting bracket as missing?? As this is only a piece of plastic and 2 screws, there was no need to make a fuss about it.
However, it then made me super critical about the product. As there are several design issues with this product which seems to show that the "light" was out when someone designed this PIR light unit.
The unit is in fact 2 units, one is the light and the other is the Solar cell, this then explains why everyone is talking about a 4.2M cable!!!
This is not bad idea, as it simply means you can locate the light where you want it, then run the cable to a solar cell that is in direct sunlight. GREAT.
But, this also is a problem and highlights further design issues.
The POWER cable enters the light unit at the TOP of the LIGHT, behind the LED panel... Now if you have the Light positioned HIGH up, and the cable comes out, well you need a set of step ladders to fix it back in. Also, there is LITTLE in the way of weather protection where the cable enters the body of the lighting unit, so suggests a design issue, which could have long-term effects due to water damage. A solution to this would have been a FIXED cable on the light unit, ensuring full weather protection, and the power cable fitting into a well designed housing on the solar panel.
The other issue is the ON/OFF button is placed below the light unit, so again you have to position the light unit within arms reach to switch it on or off. The fixing bracket is a molded plastic bracket, but the plastic is the "brittle" breakable plastic, so avoid re-positioning this unit otherwise the bracket could break off.
The LED LIGHT, well surprised that they are quoting 50W equivalent, ???Read more ›
The product may well be fine if you want to use it indoors, but outside - forget it.
The PIR is quick to react and provides a great pool of bright light so I can see to unlock the garage door. The surrounding light is considerably brighter than the full moon at its most brilliant. I found the light worked before the batteries had been charged by the solar panel. Now the unit has had a good time to charge - even in winter conditions, the light is that much brighter.
For the money, this is a superb lamp. I'm considering getting one or two more for other locations where I need a little light for safety, where wiring from the mains isn't practical.
A couple of words of caution: Although the lamp is easy to mount, be careful not to overtighten the screws as you fix the plastic bracket to the wall; it's very easily split. Secondly, I waterproofed the edges of the lamp and solar panel with some vaseline as recommended by another reviewer. It's supposed to be watertight but it's best top be safe...
Outer - Strong padded envelope.
Inner - Standard cardboard box.
Good quality hard plastic body.
Simple but effective mounting bracket.
We have had one of these lights in use since December 2008 and it is still going strong. We use it to light a dark alley between the house, the garage and a tall wooden gate. The light given is plenty to ensure that we don't step on a hedgehog or put our hands on a big furry spider when trying to unbolt the gate!
The solar panel simply sits on the flat garage roof. A matter of minutes to screw the bracket for the lamp and P.I.R. unit to the wall.
We have now obtained a second unit which is in use lighting the patio, not good for reading at night, but excellent for picking a safe route between the patio pots. One surprising thing, in 2008 it cost £24.46, now it's only £16.79.
Easy to setup, effective light when you don't want to blind your neighbours with a 500W Halogen lamp or would have a challenge to cable up a mains powered lamp.
