Sound is great. It's never going to clear a room of tutting pensioners but it's more than loud enough for the usual portable uses (which in our case is to have music in the bathroom without the risk of mains electricity). There's a good degree of control too at the loudest settings - absolutely no distortion or case rattles. The overall sound is a little warm but good sources will still ting some pleasing treble over the pacey, engaging, mid-range and clean bass. This is a clear, controlled and full sound which we like very much. Fed TuneIN radio from a smartphone, the sound was always satisfying even when dropping to lower quality streams to maintain reception. Music straight off the phone through DoubleTwist Player sounds especially good.
Pairing with a selection of phones has been less satisfying - the process works fine and features a handy etching of the main instructions on the base of the speaker, but none of our phones automatically reconnect when in range. It feels like they should so rooting around phone settings to select the speaker and re-pair with it a little annoying.
But, again, here Nokia offer an elegant near-future solution in the form of NFC functionality. If you have an NFC phone then simply tapping that phone on the top of the speaker will set-up a connection. I like that idea a lot and look forward to trying it with a future handset.Read more ›
Sound quality is fantastic - these are amongst the best desktop speakers that I've heard in this price range. The fact that they can be used completely wirelessly is a massive benefit. The speakers are also still small enough to be used in travel situations - I bring these with me for parties and weekend trips now. There's no distortion at the highest volume - and the volume coming out of these small cubes is inpressively high when you set it at full blast. Bass is fairly strong (there's some clever design in these cubes), and the treble never becomes uncomfortable.
Battery life is brilliant - unexpectedly so. Certainly, they last for a full weekend with fairly prolonged periods of music and podcasts. They intelligently turn off when there's no activity too, preserving battery life.
I cannot recommend highly enough, especially in the stereo combination. Brilliant!
Nothing but praise here - if I had the cash, I'd collect them!
I don't have an NFC device so can't vouch for that, but over Bluetooth it's a painless pairing process, compared to some devides. Pair once, then in the future, turn on the speaker, select the speaker from your phone/PC etc. and you're off. Sound quality is decent, but comparable to a decent radio rather than the kind of speaker I'd choose to sit back and listen to music through. My speaker currently lives in my bathroom, where I can stick some music on my PC and have it play while I take a shower - brilliant, but it won't replace my main PC speakers anytime soon. The one area of concern is that when connected to my PC by cable, the sound quality was very poor - with significant low-frequency crackling. I haven't been able to tell if this is an instrinsic problem with the 3.5mm input, or if the PC is just supplying it with levels much louder than over Bluetooth. I'd be interested to see if others have had a similar experience here.
Overall, it works very well for my purposes, where it represents an acceptable compromise between portability and sound quality, with a lovely fit and finish to its physical form and functionality. However, it's greatest difficulty is justifying its price for "sort of ok" sound quality.
