Focus at the speed of sight
Stay true to your aim with the fast (0.05-sec.) autofocus with the maximum (425) phase-detection AF points, exemplary image quality and the maximum in 4 K recording.
24.2 MP Exmor CMOS image sensor
The 24.2 MP Exmor CMOS sensor raises the bar of imaging performance. Its copper wiring and enhanced circuitry make it possible to lower the wiring layer and boost light collection efficiency, in order to capture low-noise images with a wide sensitivity range up to ISO 51200. The use of copper raises readout speed as well as the potential 4 K and Full HD 120 fps shooting.
High-speed BIONZ X image processing engine
How do the speed, power and efficiency of the BIONZ X image processor unleash the potential and sensitivity of the image sensor? With an algorithm optimised for the image sensor to provide stills and movies with unrivalled resolution and reproduce high quality texture and detail, particularly at mid-to-high ISO settings.
425 phase-detection AF points
With the maximum (425) focal plane phase-detection AF points helping to provide distinctively wide and dense AF point coverage, the α6300 focuses more accurately, efficiently and reliably on subjects throughout the frame.
0.05-seconds fast AF
The α6300 achieves a fast (0.05 seconds) AF speed with the enhanced Fast Hybrid AF’s integrated autofocusing performance and the uncanny efficiency of the BIONZ X image processing engine to handle so much information with accuracy.
4 K movie recording
4 K movie recording in the 35 mm format with full pixel readout and no pixel binning allows approximately 2.4 times as much information as is basically required for 4 K (QFHD: 3840 x 2160). Data this rich is, in fact, equivalent to 6 K data, so it clearly conveys the high resolution in 4 K images.
High-speed live-view continuous shooting
Clearly capture action with high-speed continuous shooting at up to 11 fps or choose among three speeds up to 8 fps, according to the shooting situation, for live-view continuous shooting with very little lag on the EVF or LCD screen, to get the sense of immediacy of shooting with an optical viewfinder.
Silent Shooting mode releases the shutter without a sound, even in continuous shooting up to approximately 3 fps with AF/AE tracking, so it's very convenient for shooting indoor performances, outdoor wildlife and in other situations where silence is essential. To turn this mode on/off more intuitively and less intrusively, assign it to a customisable button.
XGA OLED Tru-Finder
The α6300 introduces a high-contrast, high-resolution, high-visibility XGA OLED Tru-Finder that reproduces darkness and colour in very fine detail, as well as a mode to display images at the higher frame rate of 120 fps (100 fps), so you can see action smoothly and track it easily on this electronic viewfinder.
One-touch remote/One-touch sharing
One-touch remote makes your smartphone or tablet a viewfinder/remote control. One-touch sharing transfers photos/videos to your device for SNS sharing. Just instal a PlayMemories Mobile app via Wi-Fi to your NFC-enabled Android device, then touch the device to the camera to connect them. No NFC? No problem, as QR code compatibility can also pair the devices.
Enhanced Fast Hybrid AF for movies
Fast Hybrid AF makes movie autofocus precise, so it’s especially valuable for 4 K recording. In addition to a very dense phase-detection AF point array, this system in the α6300 features adjustable AF Drive Speed and AF Tracking Sensitivity to help you express more creativity by manipulating focus, as far as conditions and your imagination allow.
High sound quality (microphone terminal, XLR adaptor kit)
In addition to plug-in microphones, the camera supports line input from professional-standard audio devices with XLR terminal, with use of a separately sold XLR adaptor kit (XLR-K2M/XLR-K1M) that enables connection with various high-end microphones. That way, you can make fine audio setting adjustments and high-quality/low-noise sound recordings worthy of serious movie shooting.
Dust and moisture resistance
Enjoy carefree shooting in tough environments, thanks to comprehensive dust and moisture resistance measures that help prevent water and dust from entering the body. These measures include sealing around the buttons and dials, as well as a protective double-layered structure that tightly interlocks panels and components.

The cost of upgrading was very expensive but having used the a6300 for a week I'm glad I did.
Having both cameras I can compare directly and I can say that the a6300 has improved high ISO quality. Bordering on 1 stop better at ISO1600 and above.
At low ISOs I don't see a big difference - if any - maybe there is if you look really hard.
Previously I never shot about ISO 6,400 - now I am happy to push it to ISO 12,800.
I also compared ISO performance to my now little used Nikon D750 ( twice the weight and twice the shoulder pain! ).
Up to ISO 3200 you really struggle to tell the difference - some minor noise in the deep shadows in the a6300 vs D750 but a real close run competition. ISO 6,400 and above the Nikon clearly pulls ahead and produces less noisy images. But how often do you shoot ISO 6,400? Probably never during the day! The D750 has over advantages like better lens selection and longer battery life - but I've come to the conclusion I'm generally lazy and hate shoulder pain. a6300 with e mount lenses ( Sony 16-70 f4 is my main lens ) is so much ligher to handle.
Both cameras claim amazing auto focus that can figure out what to focus on and lock on with supreme accuracy.
I found the a6000 often focussed on the wrong thing. Instead of my brown labrador running towards me it would focus on some rocks!
I've not found the a6300 any better at figuring out what to focus on - it needs human intervention!
Neither the less the focus speed is super fast on both cameras - and when focussed on the right thing its accurate too.
The a6300 has a new focus mode that I'm finding very useful - Expand Flexible Spot.Read more ›
I've included some samples I took just wondering around my house on the second day of having it. I've got some more in full quality posted on deviant art under the name 'scrutinoustube', they can be downloaded for free and are only there for the purpose of showing quality this camera provides. The pictures also show the settings used to take the pictures. I would post the link but I'm not sure if that's allowed in the review.
When I viewed the pictures there was a lot of dust and spots on the sensor, a bit of a surprise, as it was meant to be brand new.
I can only assume that the quality control at Sony (or whoever assembled the camera) is not as good as it should be.
A new camera should be exactly that, free from greasy hands and a clean sensor. The wearing of gloves in a dust free environment I thought would be an obvious step to take.
As for the camera itself, I have only just started to get used to it, but from first impressions this is a camera that is going to bring a lot of fun and versatility into my photography.
The battery life is something that needs pointing out, as the power does seem to drop quite quickly compared to my Nikon body .
However, the Sony A6300 is a smaller camera compared to DSLR's, so the battery is also, the best bet is to get a spare battery just in case.
The menu system is quite complex, and trying to remember what page you changed something on can be a bit of a challenge, but hopefully that will get easier with use.
I also found that I was filming when I didn't realise (the button is on the right back side close to the hand grip) when I was gripping the camera while fighting with the legs of a tripod. However this does make for interesting playbacks, as you don't realise how much one can curse while struggling.
This is probably down to operator error (me) rather than any design flaw.
So, this is the most basic of reviews for a very good camera.Read more ›
As a beginner using only the Auto mode for now (I have a lot to learn!) I'm extremely impressed with the quality of photos, and how easy it is to use. The auto focus does a great job and always seems to focus on exactly what I want it to. I've taken photos in a few different scenarios now from sunrise photos to pets - and I'm always pleased with the quality of photos.
The screen on the camera tilts which is very handy for shooting at awkward angles without needing to bend down. An eyepiece comes supplied but I haven't used this yet.
As with my previous Sony camera, you can quickly send images to a smartphone through the PlayMemories app at the touch of a button. This is a feature I will use frequently.
The camera isn't too heavy either which makes carrying it about no problem. I'm about to go travelling over Christmas so I'm looking forward to getting some great shots (and learning how to use this properly when I get home!)
