From the Manufacturer
Amazing AF speed, compact design
The world’s fastest autofocus (AF) and continuous shooting provide the edge you need to capture a moment in the blink of an eye.
The best-performing compact with 1.0-type sensor
Meet the RX100 V — the ultimate compact for capturing movies and stills in captivating detail. This camera inherits the RX100 series’ renowned 1.0-type image sensor, and advances with blazing-fast 0.05-second autofocus, 315 AF points for the world’s most1 comprehensive phase-detection coverage of its kind, continuous shooting up to 24 fps with AF/ AE tracking, as well as outstanding 4K movie capabilities.
ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* lens for rich depiction
Large-diameter ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70 mm16 F1.8-2.8 lens allows wide-angle shooting out to 24 mm. Maximum aperture of F2.8 brightness at the telephoto end enables shooting images without camera shake and subject motion blur and capturing photos (such as portraits) with beautiful background bokeh. ZEISS T* Coating reduces ghost and flare.
Exmor RS CMOS sensor for speed
The newly developed 20.1 effective MP 1.0-type stacked CMOS image sensor with DRAM chip enables up to 960 fps super slow motion shooting and super high-speed Anti-Distortion Shutter up to 1/32000 sec. that are too fast for human eyes to perceive. Moreover, 315-point focal plane phase detection AF provides for extraordinarily precise autofocusing and tracking performance.
BIONZ for superior detail and texture
As the engine that powers the conversion of light captured by an image sensor into digital images, the BIONZ X image processing engine is as essential to the RX100 V as its lens and sensor. High-speed BIONZ X enables this camera to shoot photos and movies with truer, more natural details, richer tonal gradations and lower noise.
Smooth-tracking continuous shooting up to 24fps
The RX100 V can perform high-speed continuous shooting at higher than 20 MP resolution and up to 24 fps with AF/AE tracking. In addition, the camera reduces blackout on the electronic viewfinder and LCD screen, and this reduction makes for smoother monitoring of moving subjects and easier shooting of fleeting moments.
1/32000 sec. Anti-Distortion Shutter
Up to 1/32000 sec. Anti-Distortion Shutter works to minimise image distortion caused by the rolling shutter phenomenon. The extraordinarily fast shutter speed also allows you to produce photos with background defocusing using a large aperture setting even under extremely bright conditions at a maximum of EV19.
Brilliant 4K movies
In shooting 4K (QFHD resolution: 3840 x 2160) movies with full pixel readout without pixel binning, the camera collects approximately 1.7 times as much information as is required for basic 4K movie output. This oversampling effect results in images of outstanding resolution with reduced moiré and jaggies.
180˚ tiltable LCD screen for flexible composition
High-resolution 3.0-type screen with tilt capability is perfect for taking selfies and framing of otherwise impossible overhead or low-angle shots. You can use it in high/low shooting positions for greater flexibility in capturing creative compositions.
Bright XGA OLED Tru-Finder shows what you aim for
The retractable Tru-Finder electronic viewfinder’s sharp resolution equivalent to 2359k dots, bright self-illumination and high contrast are excellent for previewing shots and adjusting settings accordingly. EVF eyepiece optics are treated with ZEISS T* Coating to reduce unwanted reflections and ensure corner-to-corner visibility.

So the most important question for me is - does it take a good photo? And the answer is..... wow! Even at night, the pictures were sharp and clear and I have attached some below - all taken with no flash. The camera focuses within a split second so you can zip and out to get the snap. Even looking at the photos through a desktop computer, there was no loss of quality and no graininess or "noise", and the level of detail was remarkable. Bear in mind the photos below are just "snaps" - quickly taken at night. Imagine what this camera could do with proper skill!
The camera has a pop up veiwfinder and also a decently large screen which tilts and turns so you can take selfies or photos from odd angles. There is a also a built in flash. It has settings to allow for panorama, slow motion photography, a selection of scene settings - for pets, to reduce blur, night scenes, twilight for faces, for fireworks and for macro (you can get macro shots without adjusting the settings as the camera will switch automatically) - and you can also play about with the way the photo is taken eg to take photos in sepia, pop art, soft focus or black and white with one colour (red, yellow, blue or green) remaining.Read more ›
It’s hard to nail down who this camera is aimed for as it simply covers so many categories of photography and videography. The built in screen is hinged and is capable of being flipped toward the camera lens; this allows ‘vloggers’ to view themselves as they record videos in high definition. On a lesser scale the hinged screen could also be used for taking selfies.
The attached photograph was taken using this camera but not uploaded in a traditional way. Using a Sony Z5 smartphone, I downloaded an app called ‘PlayMemories Mobile’ which activates when my mobile’s NFC is touching the camera’s NFC (located on the side of the device). Using this form of wireless connectivity I managed to upload the attached photograph to my smartphone and from there upload to this review; the depth of field and detail speak for themselves.
While playing around with my connected mobile I stumbled upon a feature that I certainly didn’t expect. Using my smartphone I was able to stream my camera’s view directly to my mobile, not only that, I was also able to remotely capture a photograph without touching the camera.Read more ›
