The new 'ribbon' style user-interface was not for me, it looks confused and unintuitive - luckily you can switch back to the former, clearer UI in preferences and this has the added benefit of hiding more of the 'Pro' level feature buttons which you can't actually use without paying for the Pro version. Winzip integrates nicely into Explorer with useful 'Add to archive' commands embedded into contextual menus and works well when opening or creating your archives. There are moments when it tries to be too helpful, for example if you have the first section of a multi-part archive and want to check its contents before downloading the rest - you can't, because Winzip will helpfully inform you it needs the whole thing before accessing any part of it. Other less-helpful archive app's are, ironically, more helpful in this instance.
When shareware and freeware apps, together with Window's inbuilt functionality, can offer similar features at lower cost I find Winzip's current pricing really too high. However, even if it's not quite the must-have software it might have once been, Winzip's still a capable and worthwhile tool for your Windows toolbox.
WinZip 15 works with Zip, Zipx, RAR, CAB, ISO (ie disc image) and other files making it one of the most versatile world-wide and it is the industry standard zipping tool. It's also one of those utilities you may think you don't need - until you download or receive a 'zipped' file and suddenly realise you're unable to open it or use it.
If you currently use 'zip' files or regularly send large files such as photographs or lengthy documents you wish to share with others, then it's an essential tool. Winzip 15 also offers a range of other useful features, including both a full backup and incremental data backup, automatic or manual, into a zipped file which can be restored in the event of a disc drive or other hardware failure making it a worthy investment.
WinZip 15 now compresses files even quicker, supports very large files above 4Gb, and allows multi-part and self extracting archives to be created. Security is also a strong point, with encryption and password policies supported. The camera wizard is also a nice touch, allowing photos to be transferred and automatically resized before compressing into a ZIP file.
The WinZip interface is very uncluttered and straightforward to navigate and all of WinZip's features are easy to find and use. It also includes a handy desktop gadget onto which files can be dragged to be compressed or uncompressed.
The main decision any potential buyer needs to make is whether WinZip 15 offers enough added value compared with the native Windows ZIP file support. If all you want is the ability to open or create Zip files, then Windows already provides this and WinZip 15 is a bit of a luxury purchase. If, however, you require more sophisticated ZIP file management tools and extra features like enhanced security, then this is the ideal application.
It's quick and intuitive to use, and good at what it does - namely, compressing files into a much smaller size.
