Product description

One of the things I struggle with as a parent is how much time I let my kids play games. Left to their own devices, my 5- and 7-year-old would happily spend eight-hour blocks of time exploring Lego Marvel Super Heroes' streets or hunched over an iPad playing Bad Piggies. I get it - games are super fun - but at the same time I like to make sure that it's not time entirely wasted. The founders of a new iPad product called Osmo had similar issues in their homes, but they've done something about it. Osmo uses a pair of simple peripherals to deliver three educational games for young players. I got to see it in action recently, and it's an impressive piece of tech that parents should keep an eye out for. Pramod Sharma, co-founder and CEO of Tangible Play, told me that he was uncomfortable watching his kids tune out while playing iPad games. He wanted to develop something that was educational, but also required players take a more active role in what was happening on the screen. He and co-founder Jérôme Scholler developed a proprietary technology they call Reflective A.I., which uses a mirror peripheral in conjunction with an iPad's front-facing camera to detect and interpret shapes and patterns and use them in gameplay.

Manufacturer's Description

Osmo is a unique gaming accessory that will change the way your child plays. Crafted with reflective artificial intelligence, a groundbreaking technology that bridges the real and digital realms.

Bridge the physical and digital

In this digital age, the iPad offers young minds a great platform for learning and playing. But, when kids are interacting only with a touchscreen, they're spending less time engaging with their physical world. Osmo is a technology system that bridges the physical and digital worlds by taking gameplay beyond the screen.

Anyone, anytime, anywhere

Osmo isn't just for kids. Designed for anyone aged 6 and up, this educational toy can be enjoyed by nearly everyone in the family. Siblings can challenge each other in Words, best friends can work together in Newton, or dad and daughter can sweat it out in Tangram. Kids, parents, grandparents, and friends alike can play with Osmo anywhere, anytime. Even at Grandma's house, where there's no WiFi connection.

Works with all iPads

Osmo is compatible with all versions of iPad 2 and up, all versions of iPad mini and all versions of iPad Air.

Easy to setup

Set your iPad on the stand, place the red reflector over your iPad's camera, and you’re ready to play!

Awards

Osmo has gotten rave reviews from USA Today, Yahoo! Tech, The Wall Street Journal, and more! Time Magazine named Osmo one of the top inventions of 2014.

About the Startup

What is Osmo’s mission?

It has become a common sight to see so many kids with faces glued to screens disconnected from the world around. Interaction of tablets inspired us to invent Osmo which opens up iPad to the endless possibilities of physical play. Our mission is pretty simple - design holistic play experiences that are loved by children, parents and teachers alike.

How does Osmo work?

Osmo consists of a base and a red reflector. The reflector enables the iPad to read the environment in front of it, on the table. Powered by Osmo's revolutionary Reflective AI technology, the reflector brings real-life actions and movements into the digital world on your iPad.

What do you imagine for Osmo’s future?

The team at Osmo wants to open up the doors to creativity and allow any content, language or education subject to be brought to life. The unique technology in Osmo enables a mixed media spanning both digital and physical worlds. We want you to be able to shape your own experience. This is just the beginning of a play movement that will bring together kids and adults alike.

This is excellent. The mirror and stand are quite simple, but they've come up with a wide range of games to play with them - what you're paying for is the programming rather than the physical accessories. My 6 year old loves all the games that come in the starter kit, but thinks Newton is best. No doubt we will be getting the other games for future birthdays and Christmases and I look forward to seeing what new games they come up with in future.

The kids adore this and the adults love it. For me this is a game changer when it comes to getting the kids off the ipad and using their manual dexterity, hand eye co-ordination etc. The drawing side is fabulous. If you are somebody who would love to draw but can’t too well the Osmo is an great way to start.

I was suckered into buying this Osmo by an advert I saw, and as I currently home educate our children, I thought I'd give it a go. As a concept, it's really good and, on the whole, it works well. The Tangram game is the second favourite of my 3, but this is where my review loses a star. The camera seems to have real trouble picking up where the pieces are on the table. We use as blank a space as we can, we try to lessen any glare, but it always pops up with a little screen asking us to move the pieces down. When we first got it, it worked really well, but about a month ago it started mucking about and the children find it really frustrating to be working on a shape, only find the screen constantly flashing up with a request to move the pieces down, even though they're already nearly tumbling off the table. The pieces are lovely and tactile though, not tacky plastic so they are fun to move around and arrange.
The spelling game is quite enjoyable, and the camera has no trouble recognising the letters. The picture isn't always obvious either so at times there's a lot of lateral thinking going on to try and guess the word.
They haven't got the hang of Masterpiece yet, and Newton is beyond me, so when they ask me to help, I just suggest they get the Tangrams out instead.
The favourite is the numbers game, but I bought that separately so won't review that here.

I bought this to use with my 7 year old twin girls who are in year 3 and get weekly spelling tests. I find it hard work with two trying to get them to learn their words. Osmo makes it much easier!!! I upload the words and images for this weeks spelling test and once we have learnt them (of sorts) I leave one child to play the spelling game while i read with the other. I then alternate them and the other child does this weeks spelling list on osmo while i read with her sister. Really helps reinforce the spelling. For this alone it is highly recommended. I haven't tried the other apps in this pack as i didn't by it as a toy but as an aid to help with the weekly spelling list. Highly recommended for this alone!!!
