By Angel Delta TOP 1000 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on 25 July 2011
Format: Audio CD
Terri Clark burst out of Canada in 1995 and with her first album proved that not only did she have a powerful honky tonkin' voice but that she was also a talented songwriter with eleven songs on her debut album written or co-written by her.

Now, fifteen years on and seven studio albums later, she demonstrates again why she is the only female Canadian member of the Grand Ole Opry, holds a record eight CCMA awards, several CMA awards and has three platinum albums.

Unlike her contemporary Shania Twain, who came out of Canada to the US at the same time, Terri has remained a roots country performer and songwriter. In "Roots And Wings" there is an eclectic and intriguing mix of bluegrass, folk, traditional country, country pop and rock (the infectious "Wrecking Ball" - not the Emmylou Harris song).

Nine out of the ten songs were co-written by her and four were in collaboration with former Sugarland member, Kirsten Hall. These include the rhythmic "Northern Girl", a reflection upon her Canadian roots, the exquisite bluegrass number "Beautiful And Broken" and the traditional bittersweet sound of "Flowers In Snow", about a relationship that had died before she had the courage to realise it.

A personal favourite is "Lonesomes Last Call", set to an old fashioned waltz time and a perfect reminder of what country music was and what it continues to be with Sonya Isaacs providing harmony vocals. So too, does Alison Krauss on "Smile", Terri's moving tribute to her mother who died last year.

Clark has recruited a stellar band of Nashville session musicians including: bluegrass fiddlers Stuart Duncan and Andrea Zonn; veteran guitarist Kenny Greenberg and the steel guitar sound of country rock veteran, Dan Dugmore.

I'm not so into country music as before, now i prefer classical, but let's say this is country of the best, fine songwriting and very good production values, highly recommended. There are some very beautiful ballads, especially this one about her mom, which brought me to tears! Thank you Terri

A MIXTURE OF THE UPTEMPO/ROCK TYPE OF MUSIC DOWN TO THE SENTIMENTAL BALLADS AND THEN WE HAVE THE MELANCHOLY, ALL SUNG WITH A STRONG BUT TENDER VOICE. I KNEW LITTLE ABOUT TERRI, BUT NOW I AM DETERMINED TO MAKE UP FOR LOST TIME. MY FAVOURITE IS "SMILE", WHERE SHE IS ACCOMPANIED BY ALISON KRAUSS. SHE REMINDS ME, ON SOME OF THE TRACKS, OF SHANIA TWAIN, A FELLOW CANADIAN. LISTEN AND ENJOY GOOD COUNTRY FLAVOURED SONGS WELL SUNG.

I usually HATE country and have never listened to this stuff with enthusiasm before! However, after a recent flight across the pond, this was on the headphones and I actually thought it was great. The songs are variable enough to provide variety not usually found on other albums and there are a couple of gems. The first (wreckin' ball) grips you and "smile" has an extremely powerful message on the loss of a mother to cancer. Inspired and great to listen to.
