This is an excellent compilation of great Hawkwind classics with a sprinkling of rare and unreleased tracks and with a price tag like this, for a three CD set, makes it good value for money too.

The selection of tracks for the new or casual Hawkwind buyer is very good but I'll deal with just the rare and unreleased stuff here. The original Mono mixes of "Hurry On Sundown" & Mirror of Illusion" are not exactly previously unreleased but as far as I know have never been released on CD. The 1970 version of "You Know Your Only Dreaming" is the same song but done in a very different style to the version that ended up on the "In search Of Space" album. Although it's a really good version you can understand why it was left off the first album as it's just sounds very similar in style to the two vocal tracks on there. "The reason Is" is a different version than the one on the first album while Be Yourself is a different mix with non of the overdubs added to the album version. "Hog Farm" is an instrumental out take, in two parts while "Kiss Of The Velvet Whip is a 1971 re make of an old classic, much heaver and very much in the style of the other "In Search Of Space" tracks recorded around the same time. "Take What You Can" is the same song as the one released on the "Weird Tapes" as "Make What You Can" but I'm not sure yet if it's the same take. Even if it is it still runs over two minutes longer. "Seven By Seven" is the original version with alternative vocals by Robert Calvert while "Brainbox Pollution" is a much longer version than the original. "Ejection" is not previously unreleased and appeared on the DFL album as a bonus track but deserves a mention because it has a much cleaner sounding intro to the one on the album.

I would imagine for most Hawkwind fans the main attraction of this triple CD compilation are the previously unreleased tracks. So for the benefit of fans who are undecided about acquiring this compilation on the strength of the previously unreleased material this review will concentrate soley on those tracks which are as follows:

You Know You're Only Dreaming -an earlier version very much in the style of the first album. Sounds similar to Mirror Of Illusion and incorporating some instrumental jamming in the style of Be Yourself.

The Reason Is and Be Yourself -not greatly different to the versions on the first album.

Hog Farm -an instrumental sounding half way between the styles of the first album and In Search Of Space.

Kiss Of The Velvet Whip(Sweet Mistress Of Pain) -a radically different version. Sounds similar to You Shouldn't Do That.

Seven By Seven -the only difference to previously released versions is that the speaking part is done by Robert Calvert.

Take What You Can -not the version to be found on Weird Tapes 6. If it is the same recording then it's been remixed beyond recognition.

Brainbox Pollution -the full length version of the original recording. Sounds like a rougher mix compared to the original release with Lemmy's bass playing more prominent and none the worse for it.

It's So Easy -studio version. More reminiscent of the live 1999 Party version (with Lemmy on backing vocal) than the other live version.

You'd Better believe It -studio version. Less 'heavy' sounding and shorter than the 'Mountain Grill' version. Has something of the 'intended as a single release' about it.

Wind Of Change -quite different to the 'Mountain Grill' version.

This is superb value for money - an excellent and large selection of live and studio tracks from the early years of Hawkwind (69-74) .These selections do not require any eulogy from me to pursuade potential purchasers, as any Hawkwind afficionado will already have revelled in their brilliance many times before and the interested newcomer who wishes to 'Come Taste The Band' only has to click on the samples above to realise what they have missed. I paid only £4.61 for this - brand new, shrink wrapped and sent from Germany.Phenomenal value. So why not 5 stars? Well as soon as I took the wrapper off and opened the jewel case there was a little shower of plastic fragments from the broken centre holding CD1 - so CD1 is now rattling around loose in the case.Other CDs have arrived similarly where the crappy plastic case is fractured or the hinges broken or the central seating fragmented. WHEN, WHEN, WHEN will we see better packaging for CDs as routine? This is a triple CD case so I can't simply swap it for another easily. Much much better is for example the Levitation box set with its cardboard box and cardboard sleeves for the individual CDs.

Early days of hawkwind - finding their way and then utterly enjoying themselves. these tracks are of high quality and lend themselves to accurate concentrated listening, if your vinyl is worn then this is a cracking deal. to quote jim carey "SMOKIN'" !

Worth the purchase price just for the studio versions of Make What You Can and It's So easy. Every few years old Hawkwind material turns up out of the blue to remind us what a fantastic act Hawkwind were at their prime. As soon as EMI sort out their ownership wrangles with Warrior on the Edge of Time I'm sure more material will follow. All Hawkfans need to buy this!
