The moment you hit play, you'll understand why the single, 'Closer' by the American DJ duo Andrew Taggert and Alex Pall aka The Chainsmokers, has held the peak position on music charts since past 11 weeks. An EDM track with vocals by internet singing sensation Halsey and Andrew Taggart, the single scores near perfect in every department, be it production value, songwriting or music. The track blends a peppy electronic beat with vocals that have a soul. The Chainsmokers, who collaborated with Priyanka Chopra back in 2012, have tried, in Taggart's own words, 'To blur the lines between indie, pop music, dance music, and hip-hop.' With 'Closer', they have finally got it right. The songwriting draws inspiration from 90s punk band Blink 182 whom they've mentioned in the lyrics. More of a chill-out track, the emotional back and forth between the two singers keeps you glued. Also, with an easygoing and well-crafted lyric flow, you are with the characters, both in their highs and lows. The track's strengths are Halsey's refreshing vocals, the retro synth-pop vibe that exists through the song and the minimal arrangement. Taggart's singing skills don't really make a difference to the song, but his skills as a composer and a DJ more than make up. It's perfect for a weekend drive or your party playlist. Expect to hear a whole lot of it over the next few weeks, if you haven't already.
