Capercaillie Live in Concert is arguably their finest album to date, with new and vibrant re-workings of some of their material from their superb back catalogue, together with some excellent new material. Recorded at Celtic Connections in January 2002, this is Capercaillie in superbly creative form, intensely melodic, their music constantly evolving, with the wonderful Karen Matheson in absolutely beautiful voice throughout. The band is on equally fabulous form, their timing and interpretations perfect.
Capercaillie's founder, the very talented Donald Shaw, plays keyboard and accordian; Michael McGoldrick plays flute, whistle and uillean pipes so perfectly as to defy belief!; Charlie McKerron is on exquisite form on fiddle, particularly on songs like Nil S'In Gra, where his accompaniment to Karen Matheson's singing is sublime; Manus Lunny is an excellent craftsman on mandolin and guitar, Ewen Vernal plays some of the 'coolest' bass imaginable, and he HAS to be heard! Che Beresford and Chimp Robertson are excellent on drums and percussion. It is hard to pick out favourite tracks from such an impressive set, but those that rank amongst my own favourites are Finlay's (simply stunning Gaelic mouth music), Bonaparte, Crime of Passion, Miracle of Being, and Inexile, as well as the track mentioned earlier, on which Karen Matheson's voice has rarely sounded better.
What lifts this recording head and shoulders above the competition is Karen Matheson's superb, strong, assured voice, and her perfect timing. Couple this sublime sound with the band's incredible backing, and this is Capercaillie at their very best - and their standards are very high indeed!

I was lucky enough to see Capercaillie at the Sage, Gateshead recently as part of their 30th Anniversary Tour. Although this Album was recorded ten years ago it conveys the wide ranging musicality the group are famous for live. If you like Celtic music you will not be disappointed adding this Album to your collection.

Capercaillie have not done many live performances on cd, this certainly makes up for the shortfall. Brilliant

Unique blend of styles, rock, folk and the singing is superb even if it is in Gaelic!

Excellent album and very well recorded. As a new convert to this band I found it a great way of getting into their music 🎶. The singing and musicianship are superb and I will certainly investigate the rest of their catalogue 📇 now. Don't hesitate buying.
