The tragic news that one of the true legends of rock music passed away recently was as sad as it was shocking. This genius maverick not only co-founded The Velvet Underground - the band Lester Bangs inarguably claimed were the start of all new music - but he too composed the lion's share of their near perfect catalogue. The fact he then went on to establish a solo career that was as dynamic, controversial and genuinely enthralling as that of any 1970s performer a category in which his old muckers David Bowie and Iggy Pop are most certainly included clearly illustrates what a rare talent this man possessed. This 3 DVD set covering in depth the man and his music as it features three separate films which, one and all, pay tribute to New York's favourite son. Featuring: THE VELVET UNDERGROUND UNDER REVIEW: This 75-minute film reviews the music and career of arguably rock music's most influential collective. PUNK REVOLUTION NYC; THE VELVET UNDERGROUND, THE NY DOLLS & THE CBGBs SET: Tracing the entire history of New York's punk scene, this film shows how VU were near instrumental in shaping one of this unique city s most celebrated musical genres. THE SACRED TRIANGLE BOWIE, IGGY & LOU 1971 1973: Telling the story of how these three musical pioneers interwove at the beginning of each of their solo careers, forming an association which made for, probably, the finest music to emerge in the early 1970s.

Lou Reed: Tribute is a 3 DVD box set released by Chrome Dreams. This is a riveting document on the moves and momentum of one of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll players as well as an insight in to his peers, protégés and pals. It is conclusive that The Velvet Underground has had an immense influence on contemporary culture-and, from their early associations with Andy Warhol and his empire forwards this iconic New York pop product made an indelible mark on many musicians that followed. Reed and Welsh wizard John Cale were central to the ‘Velvets’ early development and along with Stirling Morrison and Moe Tucker a quartet was formed and modern music was kick started!
DVD 1: The Velvet Underground-Under Review collates analysis from those in the inner circle plus associates and journalists. The resulting assessment dissects the scene, the sounds and the evolving freedom of 60’s expression that took Reed and his cohorts down a different route to the seemingly dominant peace and love population identified with west coast America. What becomes apparent is the colossus of creativity that sprung forth and even though the emphasis changed when Cale left and Doug Yule stepped in there was still a great deal to champion.
DVD 2: Punk Revolution-The Velvet Underground, The NY Dolls & the CBGB’s Set
takes the Velvet Underground template and assesses what followed in terms of the acts that catapulted from a 70’s Big Apple. From this point we are introduced to the likes of the New York Dolls, Television, Suicide, Blondie, Patti Smith and a cast of other integers.Read more ›
