Product description

When Apollo astronaut Gene Cernan stepped on the moon in December 1972 he left his footprints and his daughter's initials in the lunar dust. Only now, over forty years later, is he ready to share his epic but deeply personal story of fulfillment, love and loss. Cernan's burning ambition carried him from a quiet Chicago suburb to the spectacular and hazardous environment of space, and ultimately, to the moon. Five years in the making, The Last Man on the Moon unveils a wealth of rare archive, and takes Cernan back to the launch pads of Cape Kennedy, to Arlington National Cemetery and to his Texas ranch, where he finds respite from a past that refuses to let him go. Sharing home movies, scrapbooks and intimate moments with his closest friends and family, he brings his spine-tingling experiences to the big screen more vividly than any moonwalker has done before.

There are plenty of films and programmes about Apollo and the space race, and they all necessarily follow the same themes - Kennedy's original goal, the process and hardware for flying there and back, the mission controllers, things going wrong (the fire and Apollo 13), the astronauts themselves - their background, training, personalities and families, the exploration of the moon itself, the splashdown, perhaps the welcome and the subsequent struggles. It's a lot to pack in and it's hard to do without repeating the same footage, quotes, and people, and without repeating itself, because the basic shape of the missions is quite similar and there were lots of them - seen one launch, seen them all. It's a fascinating story and still an awe-inspiring achievement, but it's hard to make it fresh.

This film somehow manages to make it all fresh and exciting again. It does this by following one astronaut from early on right to now. Cernan is an ideal candidate because he is famously talkative about his experiences, but also because his missions cover all the details - Gemini, an Apollo non-landing test flight and 17 - which means that you can tell a lot of the story of the whole programme just through him. Where it really works though is the amount of time and care the film spends on Cernan now, on his reflections looking back. Like in the hit "In The Shadow Of The Moon", there's something deeply touching about seeing these heroes reflecting back on their lives from the perspective of old age, but this film takes that further by showing him chilling out with some friends and family. It's beautifully paced, affectionately personal without being too syrupy, informative, and moving.

Loved it.

This is an exceptional DVD in that it not only captures the views and thoughts of Gene Cernan, but also some of the people who took part in the US space program (astronauts, flight directors etc.), as well as his family and friends.

A very moving and excellent, heartfelt documentary about one of America's and the World's greatest explorers. A true hero in every sense and an integral part of man's greatest achievement! A must buy for any fan of the moon landings. Anyone that doubts that we went to the moon, watch this and tell me he did not go! Rejoice in a wonderful story of achievement and celebrate a true hero! Magnificent!!!

I've read and seen most films, programmes and literature about the Apollo programme including the superb pack of photos and mission briefings that NASA sent me in 1975. I've also read Gene Cernan's book upon which this film is based so i was keen to obtain it. Some of the reviews have been less than positive and that delayed my purchase for a while but eventually I dove in and I'm VERY pleased that I did.
The film is excellent. Gene Cernan comes across as surprisingly humble and grounded (no pun intended). The presentation is effective, the clips used appropriate and the contributions from friends, family and colleagues are very human. I'd recommend this to anyone because it's a human story and one of the important ones but for a student of Apollo it is essential. Be prepared to feel sad when Gene visits pad 39A though ...

A wonderful trip through memory lane of this moonwalker as he tells you his life and a must see for a space and sceince fan. Although the book has more detail, this bio-docu film has great pics and footage of the moonrace era and much more. Its really an emotional trip.

I have always been fascinated by the Apollo astronauts as a child. This is a fantastic watch by a very humble man. It is also very touching . It shows him as a young pilot in the Navy to being selected for the Apollo programme. He even visits the graves of his mates who died during the race to get to the moon. BRILLIANT!
