My house is full of 50W halogen recessed spot lights that look great but burn through electricity. I've tried many different alternatives, from early LED bulbs to compact flourescent and none of them have been bright enough. I figured it was about time something came on the market that really worked, and when I saw this Philips fitting had come out I thought I'd give it a go and it's perfect. The light is a very similar colour to the halogen's it replaced and it's just as bright if not brighter. I've got three of them and it's good to know they're running at a total of 21W instead of 150W. It will probably take a couple of years to pay for itself, but that's fine, and it's satisfying to know my lighting's green!

Note, it's much longer than a standard GU10, but actually fits perfectly in the recessed fitting I have since the connector is on a flexible lead so can cope with different length bulbs, so it ends up flush to the ceiling. I have seen a video of this bulb on the Philips website where it sticks out of a fitting a little and I actually wouldn't have minded if it did, it's got a very nice finish.

Now I just need to save up to replace the other room's bulbs!

I have been waiting for some years for LED technology to mature to the extent that the products brought to market are genuinely viable alternatives to other forms of lighting. I think the new Philips range may be sufficiently highly developed and engineered to bring LED lighting to the mass market, once prices fall - at today's prices they are still for those with the vision to invest in the long term payback that these bulbs promise. My experience with this bulb is a mixed bag. It is a very well made product, which inspires confidence. Despite being termed "Warm White", at 3000 Kelvin the light output is discernibly on the white/cold size of a halogen, but not so much that it is distracting. It certainly appears as bright as a 50W halogen, which is a first for LED bulbs. The fly in the ointment, which prevents a 5 star award? The length of the bulb means that it may not fit in all light fittings. I have 25 downlighters of the same type, and these bulbs will go in, but it is a tight fit - there is no room for the bulb retaining clip, but fortunately the bulb remains in place by friction. Oh, and after 48 hours of use, one of the four LEDS in my trial bulb has failed - so much for the 25 year life claimed by Philips on the packaging! I'll be returning this one for a refund/exchange - but I will most likely persevere, as it is probably the best LED bulb out there at the moment...though I note that Osram have just brought their LED GU10 5W lamp to market (though not yet listed on Amazon), which may also be worth a try.

Bought this, was expecting a lot from it, after reading through the detailed philips technical specs on how much light was provided by each bulb (not many bulb makers provide this info). Im glad their dimmerable, as the light is fantastic from these lights - just right, and not blue/white, and no warmup time.

they are cool to the touch (had to test that claim!) so these not going to be a heat issues, which was a worry for me, unlike my current megaman CFls which do get quite hot.

being a 40* as opposed to the ~100* angle that my CFLs were the light doesnt quite light up to the same point on the wall that the current cfls would. were talking ~10cm here, against 3M walls, with the lights 50cm from the walls (1M wide hall). the light doesnt obviously pool on the one spot in the floor either, and is quite dispersed.

The bulb is heavy, due to all that metalwork and is the same size as the megaman bulbs.

Only gripe on these is the price, but i have no doubt that this will come down in time, if nothing else once more people stock these! - i just hope these last 1/2 as long with decent brightness as their supposed to, but only time will tell.

I have been waiting for this product. I had been using CFLs to keep my electricity bills down. They were OK but they were not spotlights. The Phillips LED unit may contain 4 LEDs but you would not guess that from the beam. The internal geometry is such that they cast clear, hard edged shadows. Although their light is blueish rather than golden, I find it very acceptable for domestic use.

I am using mine in an open ceiling fitting. This works suprisingly well as the heat sink looks sculptural - even elegant. The 40° beam angle is fine for my domestic use but you may want to look out for the 25° version if you need a light that casts a tight beam. They run hot, although not as hot as CFLs, so take care if handling while they are on.

My only issue with the product is that dimming is not that successful. Dimming a halogen lamp changes the colour of the light, it becomes warmer and more comforting. Dimming a LED just changes the amount of light emitted. The dimming range with my dimmer is also very limited - about the only effect that you notice is that you are less dazzeled when you look into the light source.

A great product if, like me, you need to have the light on for long periods as it is a very low energy light source capable of replacing a 50w halogen lamp. They also have the potential for a very long life so you will not be constantly getting the step ladder out to replace them, which has to be a real bonus for anyone.

Six months on...

These units have fully lived up to my expectations. The key point being that they are instant on - unlike the CFLs they replaced. This has proved more useful than I had realised and they contribute to my personal safety.
