The Actifry does what it says - it cooks chips using a minimal amount of oil. Preparation is easy enough - peel and cut some spuds, pour a measure of oil over it, set the timer and walk away. About 40 minutes later, they're chips with a fairly crisp texture and fluffy centre. The maximum load is about enough for four people.

The device itself is relatively simple. It's either on or off and there is a countdown timer. Heat comes from an element at the back and is blown over the contents of an inner pan which contains a rotating paddle to gently stir / turn the contents. The parts of the pan come apart so they can be put in a dishwasher. The pan has a detachable plastic collar which seems pretty flimsy and it's not clear what it's mean for or why it couldn't be part of the pan itself. One criticism is that it has a very large surface footprint, protruding forward quite a bit because of the position of the heater / fan at the back.

The main benefit of this device would be for people who use a deep fat fryer predominantly for chips and are fed up with the smell, changing oil and all the gunk. And of course all the oil that ends up in the food. The Actifry is far simpler in every respect. I don't think there is a clear case for people who eat oven chips since they only have 3-5% oil in them anyway and cook easily in an oven.

Aside from cooking chips the Actifry can be used for stir-fry style dishes - tip the things in as you would with a wok and cook until they're done. You could probably use an Actifry to cook some other deepfried items - wedges, roast potatoes, drumsticks, sausages etc. It would be no use for anything which is battered or loosely breaded though.

A great and healthier way to fry your food. I purchased this to replace my old fat fryer which was over 5 years old. It is very simple to use and the food tastes great. Its much healthier than the old fat fryers as you only have to add on spoonful of oil.

If you have an old fat fryer and use it regularly i would strongly recommend buying this as a replacement.

Just got this .... via Prime next day delivery to be honest I was sceptical with this tea spoon of oil to make chips. Can I also say Ive never made chips in my life however as the wife was as sceptical as I was she too was intrigued when I peeled a couple of spuds and chipped washed and dried them on a bit of kitchen roll, followed the instructions and put a "spoon of oil" on them and set it going. As soon as I saw them browning up I took them out. I wont say they taste like chip shop chips Id say they tasted as they should very nice chips that I had for my lunch a good old "chip butty"
How this will fair in the days and weeks to come will be down to her indoors who does all the kitchen stuff. She's thus far impressed.

If you have any ideas about cooking your onion bhaji or making your own potato crisps in this device, you are in for a surprise. The machine is big (40cms back to front, 28cms wide, 24cms tall) and takes up a lot of space for what it does. Supplied also are a green plastic spoon for measuring the oil (it does not have a half-way mark for when that amount is needed), a Quick-Start leaflet and a 15-page recipe booklet.

I was so excited to receive this Actifry even though the one supplied is the Actifry Original and not the Actifry Plus. I understood from the name and product information that this machine is for frying food one usually fries, but in minimal fat. This is not quite so.

The quick-start leaflet is in a 6pt-font so I had to squint hard to decipher it. The ‘quick instructions for use’ are not set down in a clear one-two-three fashion; I needed my magnifying glass to read the Table of Cooking Times. 45 minutes to cook chips? 35 minutes to cook courgettes?

I turned to the recipe booklet (which has twelve recipes) but there is only the ‘Real Home-Made Fries’ that is a straightforward affair. The recipe for calamari takes 25 minutes to cook plus prep time and suggests we serve the squid with Actifry chips (which take 45 minutes). How do we juggle cooking both these things in one machine? The photographs in the recipe book show food that is puzzling: breadcrumbed chicken breasts with no mention of the breadcrumb coating in the instructions, or neat onion rings where the recipe states, ‘dice the onion.’

I had a go at the chips: peeled, cut, washed, dried the potatoes, put them into the cooking bowl and sprinkled with the oil.

I've never liked oven chips but it's that or the unhealthy chip pan option. I'm so pleased with the way this can make chips that are an excellent compromise between the two. I'm now experimenting with what else I can create in it with excellent result. Worth every penny.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I am still trialing this item but wanted to get in my impressions as I have cooked two meals involving this appliance and feel I am getting to know it, still more I want to try though soon!

Firstly it is bigger than i thought but reasonable as it does replace the deep fat fryers that are out of vogue now. It is similar size to a microwave yes but feels smaller as lower and the shape is rounded, i love the design! - only thing that trouble me is reading the digital timer as it is positioned at the back and i am not tall enough to lean over to read it well. You do need a decent space for it though.

I sounds a lot more complicated in the manual to use than it actually is, I am finding it easy to use, it is a question of putting the food in, setting the timer, and pressing the on switch, you can get an idea of time from the manual.
Cleaning the machine is easy so far, the more fatty the food the more cleaning it takes but no more than most pans!

Firstly I did chips and I must admit it made less than i imagines, I think as they lost moisture and had to be weighed before cooked, I was hoping they would come out like crispy fluffy chips but they didn't! The manual has all sort so of blame on this such as the supermarket not storing potatoes correctly! I am going to try wider chips and getting them dryer. They were nice but just as they would be oven cooking them from homemade.

I had a better impression of how it could cook mince when I did that yesterday, I put in 500g mince beef, and some tomato passata, with onion and garlic, and set it, it cooked a treat but I would give it less time next time and maybe put a bit more liquid, I was impressed though and saved the cooker top being splashed with fat!

There are many things that can be done in here and am enjoying trying it out. I am not finding it noisy, like a quiet hairdryer and much quieter than my soup machine or old bread maker!
