Review

I d be tempted to make this my disc of the month... the programming is good... the instrumentation is appropriate and unfussy and all the performers really know what they re doing both as individuals and as ensemble members... at a time when Charpentier releases are less frequent than they once were this is one to treasure. --David Hansell, Early Music Review October 2013

RECORDING OF THE MONTH This disc is a treasure, because of the repertoire and because of the performances. The Ensemble Correspondances delivers incisive performances in which the qualities of Charpentier's music are impressively exposed. The singers have nice and supple voices and are very responsive to the text. Thanks to their precise intonation the harmonic peculiarities come off perfectly. The label Recording of the Month is well deserved. --Johan van Veen, MusicWeb International- November 2013

'...highly talented musicians … a definite air of grace and beauty, which is enticing and relaxing.' --Pete Trewin, Hi-Fi + April 2014

Marc-Antoine Charpentier resided at the Hôtel du Guise for some eighteen years, from the early 1670s. Around him he built up a coterie of around fifteen musicians and together they performed for their patron, Mademoiselle de Guise (whose many other titles included that of Princess de Joinville). The House had always been supportive of the arts, but music was the princess's great love and Charpentier was able over this period also to address her particular adoration for the Virgin Mary. On this album we sense this devotion even in the instrumental pieces, which are highly unusual at this time for having been written for religious use.

The surviving scores are in Charpentier's own hand and he himself took the countertenor line, marking it up 'Moy icy', [Me here]. Daucé and his ensemble have caught the unique aura of quiet piety which must have prevailed in the Hôtel de Guise, quite separate from the Court with all its ritual and pageantry (and excess). There's a tranquility borne of rhythmic assurance, and a slight astringency here which seems totally in keeping with this atmosphere.

Ensemble Correspondances is a relatively new group, the members having been brought together by their director Sébastien Daucé whilst they were all studying at the Conservatoire in Lyon. French sacred music is their speciality and this is their first recording for Harmonia Mundi. It's an auspicious debut.
